  5. The Pioneer was a really great worthwhile event .I will be doing jb2c and pioneer and mankele and the one day events .would love to do more events in the cape .You guys are lucky .Attakwas on to do list, but the wife's birthday is on thre 20 jan and atta on the 19 .The problems we have to deal with .There is a new event by Dryland in the kouebokkeveld that looks very promising
  6. If you know what you want ,good used is great .Have bought 3 used bikes on the hub .Saved about 25k and got very good deals .I also saw the momsen add .Great deal if that is what you want and can use all the parts .You dont want to get stuck with unwanted parts .There are some very good deals on new bikes .For 30 35k you can buy a very good DS .Giant anthem x 29er for example
  7. Stage2 and 3 worthwhile at w2w .Those man made single track on day one only irritated me
  8. Victor rides a 23 inch Merida big nine .I am 6.4 and am on the max of a 22 inch bike .Hatfield cycles has a 23 inch merida in stock currenly .Santacruz tallboy xxl was avaliable at hermanus cycles not long ago
  9. Mushashi.I agree crests are stronger than they get credit for .But with my total weight with bike at 110kg ,they dont inspire the same confidance going down a steep rocky decent at speed
  10. The 719.s.At your weight crest is fine, but not as stiff or strong as mavics.Putting it another way .I trusted the mavic combo for robust heavy riding like pioneer and they held up brilliantly .I will only trust the crests for flat type dirtroad riding .JB will tell you ,you can bend a rim on a flat road too ,and he is right .Continental protection tyres are as robust as they come .Let a local wheel buider build you a set and use and abuse them in this wonderful MTBing country of ours
  11. Having a set locally built will be a few hundred rands more and you will have access to the builder if needed .I have crest rims with X9 hubs and weigh 95kg .No problems so far.I also have hope evo 2 hubs with mavic rims on another bike .The mavics are much more rigid and strong and a super combo with the hope hubs .Crest rims are more flexible and will work well with your weight .If i build again ,it will be hope .mavic,dt swiss como again +-R 7000.0
  12. I have tried several saddles this year , and every time i am back on WTB silverado .Worst was sella italia gel flo .Bontrager not bad .3 stage races this year on silverado has sealed for me.Phenom looks good ,but haven,t tried
  13. NO .
  14. Bryton 35 HR monitor packed up within 6 months of moderate use .Got new one under warrenty .Software sucks .Garmin or suunto or polar ?
  15. Wash with all purpose cleaner .I use WD 40 to clean bearings before greasing them again .Dont ride in the mud again .Ride in mud if you are planning to replace groupset shortly What do you lube with now?
  16. Anthem or trance is all you need .Anthem if you like more endurance XC .Trance if you like the downhill thing
  17. Match the pedals and cleats always with Shimano and lube them the same as your chain .They will release smoothly
  18. Only componant i have never had a problem with are Shimano SPD XT pedals .The look could work also ,but i have used 6 sets of spd,s in 10 years on different bikes problem free
  19. I am reading this watching my new groupset shining in the morning sun .Had to replace chain, casette, front derailer and crank sprockets after last 5 weeks riding 900km in the WP .Glad i put this race on the shelf .Happy for the guys that endured and completed the mudfest .Rust de winter was as bad apparantly
  20. My other bike is a SL729 that i use for shorter races .Love the bike ,but that maestro suspension is o so sweet !
  21. I must have passed thousands of road bike riders on my MTB ,because i was able to train a lot on a mtb .I cannot see how you can get a lot of safe training done in Gauteng on a road bike .Certainly not in Pretoria .On a mtb there is ample places to ride safely
  22. I ride a XL anthem and completed both CPT and W2W without problems .I agree that because of the racing geometry steep downhills need more weight to the back .I am tall and handled the steepest downhills that you can imagine at pioneer without ever feeling unsecure .Lots of better downhill bike riders ended up in the track or bushes .With all these racing geometry bikes you have to move your weight well back on single track and downhill .I am building a santacruz tallboy to find out for myself but will keep my anthem frame .My fear is that the SC will not be as good as the anthem .I will be able to tell you once i have ridden the santa .Take nothing away from the anthem .Best allrounder around and the new model is a great deal with full XT and Full fox for R36000.
  23. Not if you ride Giant .
  24. I agree .My mtb SAS seeding is B and i was seeded in group mm .I would love to see how the other mtb roadies or SS people did with the 94.7.I am not planning to buy a roadbike to do one race a year
  25. have the same bike and rims with maxxis crossmark. No problems whatsoever.Check your rim
