  1. Have also tried both, first ever XC race (provincial at Logwood 2003) with resin pads, flippin heck I only rode 2 laps (yes they were pretty new so that clears that up!). Some may remember it was absolutely pi$$ing down, even the down singletrack was like small rivers. In fact the only race I have ever DNF'd, sintered since then, no complaints! A question though, do you buy the original pads or OEM? Have heard that the Avid's (using Juicy 7) don't last as long as the BBB or other replacements. Don't really know since I've always ridden with the originals. Heard a rumour that some bike shops whip the originals out immediatley and replace them with the BBB's (could be a rumour or perhaps some money making - surely not!)
  2. We'll be riding MTB out to the blockhouse (1stop on the R59 to Vanderbijlpark) off road Saturday, it does cross the Lido route. In fact at the point where you cross the R59 after the steps! Hopefully we'll see you guys there, will look out for you. Suikerbosrand long ride Sunday! Not with EWEP but hopefully again we'll see you all there somewhere.
  3. Sjoe thanks Pantani - Thought I was lost for a minute but you summed it up very well!
  4. MichH - that Scott talking to you again after you assaulted it with your uhhhm........... ?
  5. Breeze - The one showing the finger was in the Mr Price kit (darkish skinned fellow) - the chappie in the Harmony kit was somewhat ahead (seemed stronger?).
  6. OK so I was obviously way of the mark here, it is ok for juniors to show the finger (that was my original complaint but yeah whateva as the kids say these days!).
  7. Ok so NelMapius is about 10k's if not longer with no verge just a single lane of tar but don't worry the motorist will just tootle along patiently at the cyclist 6-8k pace on that tough section for as long as it takes for him to undo / drink / put back his gel. No problem
  8. Spinnekop - and you know that the senseless killings in our country don't bother me? We had that discussion when?
  9. Ok sorry guys I'll ask admin to delete it then! Obviously not an important observation. Perhaps you guys should go back to 'nite nite' or Shimano vs Campy threads for your entertainment for today! Rock maybe your kids are (or future one's will) but I like to think and am pretty sure that mine aren't. And yes quite a few hubbers know my son and see him around I'm sure they can vouch for that but hey just another 'useless' observation! Cheers
  10. I have recently moved offices from Midrand to Centurion and so have been travelling along Nelmapius drive through Irene since last week Tuesday. I've seen quite a few Mountainbikers along there (they ride on the verge in the sand!). So today I see 2 juniors slogging it out up the hill out of Irene, first a chap with Harmony kit and a black Ridley then a bit later one with Mr. Price kit and a white Ridley, he is busy trying to open what seems like an energy gel (maybe one of those with the screw on top) and wanders into the road. Now those of you who know this road will know that it is very narrow and has no 'tar' verge at all, a silver merc comes up behind and hoots (probably just to warn the youngster he is coming and that space is needed!) and the cyclist proceeds to move over and immediatley give the driver the finger. Hope his parents didn't teach him that and I'm sure that his club / cycling academy doesn't condone it either! I'd give my laaitie a fat smack if I found out he had reacted in that manner. And he will grow up to be a 'I wonder why motorist have such a bad attitude toward cyclists' adult rider or maybe a pro that doesn't greet others who knows.
  11. DR - you to lazy to put a patch on the inside to cover the cut? Or is it to long/big? We put a patch inside Byron's and he's riding it like that since early Dec no problem!
  12. Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh tubeless, a wolf in sheeps clothing my brother calls it! I have been running Joe's with normal Maxxis Crossmarks (non-UST) now for 3 months on both my HT and FS. Have had a few (4 or 5 that I know of!) punctures that have sealed. Also had 1 that would only seal up to 30PSI, any harder and the Joe's would come flying out. I filled that short cut with Superglue and now it seals to whatever PSI's. I know that it works since when I checked my tyres to see how much sealant was still in before Sabie experience there was very little. Topped up easy! As for traction, handling etc., the way I ride that's not my biggest problem!! So can't comment. Noticed though that the rear has already worn down considerably compared to other tyres I have ridden. Byron had a sidewall cut at Sabie experience and as DR says pretty much in the same time it would take to fix a normal puncture (strip out, tube in, bombed!) we were off again, max 2-3 mins. I think one of the problems that people have is that they think tubeless will plug any hole no matter how big or long in the case of a sidewall cut. We take the view that if Joe's has not sealed it to continue riding (i.e. the wheel is flat!), pop in a tube and sort the problem out after the ride. You would have had to do that anyway were it a 'tubed' tyre!
  13. So am I! We're in Brackendowns near Bracken high (a block away in fact). My son does quite a bit of bike maintenance and rebuilds. I am sure he will do it for you. Ewep can vouch for his workmanship! Fitted a new shock on his bike for him. Cost? One of those "you pay him what you think it's worth after"! I would generally say do it yourself as long as you have the tools available (Crank removers, chain breakers, BB removing tools etc.)
  14. CP - to save you the trouble check it here :- https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=9134&PN=2 No I didn't have it saved in my favourites!!!!!!!!
  15. CP - I can't believe you missed MichH's soft porn! Don't think any of the guys did Byron says that the Merida never ever threw him off maliciously and he's a bit shocked to hear that!
  16. amoryns - I'm with you on that, what a bunch of moan gatte! Just a reminder that Yolanda and her partner finished Sabie experience 5th overall! As I recall she had a technical problem at the champs? Could be wrong! 17. Thanks IanJ - will do that this evening (he's coming round for help!)
  18. Hey DR so you're saying we can tighten like 'way' tight without damaging anything? Should we go with threadlock or something similar as well to stop any future re-occurence? Nellie - it isn't new so no going back! You can't allude to a dark secret and not expect lots of digging and begging and other means being used by hubbers to find out what it is so you may as well just come out with it! (worth a try hey!)
  19. PICTURE THIS !!!! One of our intrepid training companions arrives to ride our long ride through Suikerbosrand nature reserve yesterday morning sporting a fancy schmancy new Monoc with all nicely colour co-ordinated kit (red and black frame ,red tyres , FSA wheels etc. etc.), ok so none of this is improtant to the story but ......... After about 10k's of riding we get up to sprint to beat a robot that is about to go red and luckily (for him!) as he sits down to continue, the right (non-drive) crank arm falls off. Now had that happened with full power to the pedals he could have been talking with a very different voice today!!! He knows that the bolts were all tight when he left home (bike had only just been built). We then proceed to put the crank back on and tighten the bolts (ok so just with a multi tool!) but it falls off again within a few 100 meters. None of us have any experience with DA 10sp so I wondered has anyone else experienced such a thing? Any advice on how to ensure it doesn't happen again?
