  1. I have a 29er - bought a 2.2 Mountain King and it looked silly at the front, so swopped to a 2.4 (did Epic - great tyre). This is the sixe including the knobs so is about the same as a Race King 2.2 (which I have on the back). I will keep the 2.2 (still unused) for the back in a really tough day, or as a mud tyre on the front (more clearance)
  2. I did it for the first time after 0 cycling - bought my bike end October and then did a slow 94.7. Did some marathon racesjust to get the time in the saddle - this is all you really need. So cycle a bit during the week and focus on long rides on the weekend - ride both days. Sani2C is a fun race - day 2 is a bit difficult - just walk the 2 big hills and enjoy the rest.

In - missed last year doing that "other" race in the Cape. Prefer doing Glen's races they should improve the tufts of grass this year.....
  4. will be XL - I have Spez and Ellsworth 21" Fits me (with a longer stem) @ 190 cm
  5. Hi All I have an SUV which has a spare on the back door. My Thule Ride-on works as a general carrier, but I am doing the Desert Dash and will need to have something smaller and more flaxible to allow me to get to my food through the back door. Thus I need to use a towbar extension to use a simple hang-on type carrier that can fold into my boot. These are all vertical and will catch on the spare if I do not extend the towbar. Anyone used these and are they robust enough? I will be doing a long trip with the bike and do not want to have issues along the way.
  6. 29er was great (did the 2010), especially on the railway line... will battle with the R22k, but Specialised Epic is about R30k
  7. so where is the bike review? TB?
  8. I am over 100kg's and ride the AC's - no problem
  9. Maybe you shoud buy the lockable ones - I have done this, although I do not lock when there are no bikes on..... If you need a standard one without a lock I have as I replaced with lockables - presume this is the standard ride-on?
  10. Tarmac you are right - if you put your magnet onto your 26" tyre, but keep your computer the same, one revolution will now be about 6" shorter than the 29er tyre, so it will show you as faster..... Us on a 29er have the time to think about these things as we have a smoother ride
  11. You forgot to mention, that if you do not reconfig your computer you go a lot faster. Also then for the same computer distance, the other components do not wearout as fast as you are not going as far as the computer says you are (only works with non gps devices), so you save money.....
  12. It is not a revolution, but evolution.... some species stay behind, others move on and improve Totally non-biased opinion of course. I say "Ride it and See" - if you don't like it don't change. In terms of racing, I was watching Burry vs Kevin the other day - came to a stream - Burry went straight through, Kevin got cought on a rock and had to stop.....
  13. Nah Kiwi your other bikes look fine - this one I don't know
  14. Howdy Good bike - did Epic on mine - there was at least one other there as well. No problems - loving it I have the XL, so it is a big bike, but is as light as my old hard tail, but I have now added 2.4 tyres on the front to give it some "houding" I got the last of the 2009 frames, which are the original design - the 2010 looks better (better clearance at the back wheel - although I do not have a problem) I did some testing, but you battle to get FS 29er's to test - especially the XL's. Looked at the Spez Epic as well, but there was no stock, but I am happier as I have an Ellsworth. I am also only a multi-day event person, and find the FS 29er a good way to go - I definately finish each day less tired. I got a good deal on the components by getting a pack with X-9 spec with Am Classic wheels - had no problems with anything yet. Good luck - you will not be sorry
  15. Thing to remember on the Landy's is to check that the bikes wheels are not near the exhaust - you can cook the rubber. If the rack is outside the spare, then this should not be a problem. else bend the exhaust to point away from the bikes (boiled a tyre on the way to a Sani2C...)
  16. If you are training for the TB - you can ride anywhere on the road, as most of the event is on road. So anywhere will do - distance and time more important than technical
  17. Ride the Reba Team - had no problems (did Epic and training), but have not ridden with others to compare. The hard thing is to get a comparison....hard just trying to get a test 29er, so you go with what you can get.
  18. If he is asking questions like this and getting help from a Roadie, then I would question if he is ready for the Epic It is a reasonably technical ride, and requires major investment in entry fees, kit and time - you don't just enter on a whim! You can always get in - just costs....
  19. The VAT is basically done at about 16% for some reason? Also if you buy the "wrong" product, can be an issue - I bought a 2.2 tyre, but when I put it on looked too skinny, so bought a 2.4 from my LBS at only about R70 premium.... so anyone want a 2.2 Mountain King 29"? Otherwise the order arrived - all correct and a lot cheaper - you must check the prices though
  20. I definately believe that you should practise carrying your bike. I had a problem in the Epic and had to carry to the previous water hole where the techie was. I did not know how best to carry, so I was very uncomfortable, and got many bangs. When you get a new bike, work out the best way of carrying it.... Oh, and I was fine with the pushing - gat the butt a rest....
  21. Mine is R278 plus vat What is this for - surely it should be consistant, and only if they read the meter. What happens if you read you own meter?
  22. Looks reallly good - how do you get it to the weight? What size is it, and do you meassure with the pedals, bar-ends, slime, cages etc on - ie the road weight? My X-large 29er came out at 13kg.
  23. Have not had a problem with mine to date - touch wood
  24. Using the Spesh Fast Trak, but going to move to Conti's for the Epic

If you are going to use often, have a carbon frame, funny shaped bike, then I think that the ride-on is better. I have had mine for about 4 years and no problems - have even added golf clubs onto it when pressed for space. The only issue I have had is that hte lights don't always work - something that you will only have with the ride-on, but at least you have lights - the hanging covers the lights. Price is also an issue
