  8. Bigot: a person who strongly and unfairly dislikes other people, ideas, etc The term and definition thereof according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is apt in this case. Prejudice against a group (as per allowing certain terms, but not others of same nature)
  9. I gave my interpretation and experience. Also showed reasons as to why I am not off the field with my experience as per hate speech definitions in the laws of the land.
  10. I am fine with dropping the term Caucasian. In other words - not using it.
  11. It has never been use towards me or people around me in a positive, empowering way. ALWAYS used in a context such as to hurt, deride, reject or belittle. Growing up in rural Zululand (DEEP rural) I was exposed to all walks of life, and all manners of being addressed. The meaning, intent, use of of the word has been pretty much as per explanation that the mods hidden on page 2 or 3 of this thread. The word uml*ngu I place in exactly the same category as nigg*r, kaff*r, ch*nk, etc. These are all racial slurs, and they are all hurtful to a category of society, and hence they have no place in our society, or the public spaces around our society... Anyway, according to the law of the land (wiki page relating to hate speech - ) South Africa[edit] In South Africa, hate speech (along with incitement to violence and propaganda for war) is specifically excluded from protection of free speech in the Constitution. The Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, 2000 contains the following clause: [N]o person may publish, propagate, advocate or communicate words based on one or more of the prohibited grounds, against any person, that could reasonably be construed to demonstrate a clear intention to― be hurtful; be harmful or to incite harm; promote or propagate hatred.[51] The "prohibited grounds" include race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth. The crime of crimen injuria ("unlawfully, intentionally and seriously impairing the dignity of another")[52] may also be used to prosecute hate speech.[53] In 2011, a South African court banned "Dubulu iBhunu (Shoot the Boer)," a derogatory song degrading Afrikaners, on the basis that it violated a South African law prohibiting speech that demonstrates a clear intention to be hurtful, to incite harm, or to promote hatred.[54] In any case, the lack of action by owners of www.thehubsa.co.za (Information freely available via co.za registrar and PAIA manual) and their employee (moderators) is disconcerting at the least, or could possibly be taken as approving of racial slurs towards a specific group. - hate speech. This will again open a whole can of worms in light of the above. I implore the owners and employees of this website to clean it of racial slur, and add all racial slur words (long list available on ww.rsdb.org) to the filter of unwanted words.
  12. in an alley, dealing with some pressing realities
  13. Racial Slur Database definition: http://www.rsdb.org/slur/umlungu I an not letting up l. Am at the point now where I expect a public apology from the website owner
  14. if it offends, it offends. If it transgresses, it transgresses. Irrespective of the past. Just like some words.
  15. I am fine with dropping the term Caucasian. I am not fine with keeping any of the other slur words, especially those relevant in the South Afrivan context.
  16. in my books: racial slurs = hate speech http://www.nohatespeechmovement.org/ has 10 reasons why to take action against hate speech However, this one stands out: Prejudice neither begins nor ends with the subject that speaks and acts (Judith Butler) Also read this scholarblogs.emory.edu/dividinglines/2013/10/02/stereotyping-is-never-a-one-time-deal "”individual expression of prejudice neither begins nor ends with the subject who speaks” (Forman 179). I think this is powerful because it points out that prejudice, and especially racism is never really about one person simply harming another because if it was we could just work with the one person doing the harming and the problem would be solved. Structures of inequality have long histories and are connected to all aspects of life (education, housing, healthcare, the legal system, etc). And it is people (individually and in groups) that can help change these structures, just like they helped build them." Then ask yourself why racial slurs such as "k*ff*rs, n*gg*rs, ch*nks, *ml*ng*" are not used daily in the 'civilised' media. Answer to that is quite easy: Those word offend as they stereotype based on race and in the cultural hotpot that is South Africa they bring visions of hatred & division. What thehubsa.co.za (YES the website/business - via its owner & operators) is doing justifying the use of one of those terrms is beyond comprehensible....
  17. Slowbee, Your arguing (not quite sure what) reminds me a lot of a naughty child who once been caught out, comes out with increasingly more ludicrous excuses to "justify" behaviour. Go back to your posts AFTER reading the community rules and go to the mirror and ask yourself one question "How could I have been so myopic to have missed the obviousness of what I should have done as a moderator?" Yours, a disgusted forumite. AO
  18. The judgement call is mine,m not yours. It could offend me (it actually does). It does not offend you, however that is totally irrelevant as per rules of community as it could be (it does) interpreted by me (or anybody else) to be offensive. The insistence by the moderation team NOT to moderate according to the rules of the community does reflect badly on them. Anyway, so much easier for them to accede and remove the post (as it COULD offend) as per definition below, however the doggedly resist. Why? The rules does not allow for value based judgement calls. The term could offend, they should act according to that as the word was reported as offensive. Anyway, did you ask any of the native Zulu speakers around you as per the correct definition of the word umlungu, or are you just taking it in good faith that they refer to "white man" and not scum of the sea? Ask a native Zulu about the correct translation of the word (and remember they are a very polite people, so you will have to listen carefully to what / how things are said)
  19. Growing up and staying / working in rural Zululand gave me all the context I needed. I know the word for its true meaning, not for the conjuring and deceptive misrepresentations as per the interwebz. It is a slur. full stop. Yes, it is used by the majority of people in the country (because it is their slur against a minority) to refer to another racial group in a derogatory way, however it does not make it less of a slur
  20. "I'm ignorant yer 'onna"
  21. Admin make the same point in the Community Rules... (What others think) Maybe he is getting Alzheimer's? Anyway, here it is for the convenience of all We will not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia or other forms of hate-speech, or contributions that could be interpreted as such.We recognise the difference between criticising a particular government, organisation, community or belief and attacking people on the basis of their race, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age.
  22. I've been told in confidence by a higher power that there is one word amongst these that are NOT offensive k*ffir, nigg*r, c**lie, ch*nk, uml*ngu I fail to see a non-offensive word amongst those four. edit: key: a,e,oo,i,u
  23. and witchy-pointy helmets
  24. These! Just keep the spinning VERY easy. Once finished you should not even be out of breath.
  25. Feeling omnipotent / invincible / unreachable behind your keyboard / tablet / cellphone? I stand by what I've said. No inferiority complex this side. No 'white guilt' here. I take offence by the wording used, irrespective of who used it. DMMA FAQ (www.thehubsa.co.za is a member of the Digital Media and Marketing Association as proudly displayed on the homepage - button link towards the bottom of the home page) has the following to say: In terms of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act of 2000, no-one may publish or communicate words based on prohibited grounds (including race, gender, religion, culture or sexual orientation) against a person that might be construed as demonstrating an intention to hurt, incite harm or promote hatred. The act further prohibits “harassment”, which includes “unwanted conduct which is persistent or serious and demeans, humiliates or creates a hostile or intimidating environment” based on any prohibited ground. I (as many others) construe a word used in post #23 (https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/135307-the-hub-sa-what-has-it-become-and-where-is-it-going/page__st__16#entry2187556) in this thread,as define here, (post which I reported but which was not removed) as used intentionally to hurt, incite harm and promote hatred. Maybe not me directly but to people of caucasian descend as per My report in this thread, which informed all of my stance, and served as official notification of me reporting it got removed however not the offending post. These racist words (starting with k / n / u / c) has no place in an online, public forum and should be banned in totality irrespective of context. In addition, the selective moderation of said post and subsequent posts I deem to constitute hate speech as well, as it definitely incite hurt (only one of hurt, harm or hatred need to be present). The selective moderation additionally creates a hostile and intimidating environment as people are allowed to be racially define by slur words. Bluntly put: neither me, nor "my" people are the scum of the sea!
