  1. Made a quick bunch of trophies on Thursday and Friday - the guy I did it for got dropped by his usual supplier on the morning of delivery. He sent me the guy's prices and I can see why - my material was more expensive than his quote on the larger trophy. He may have planned on using off-cuts etc, but he shot himself and his client in the foot. Hopefully I'll get some more work, I liked the challenge of getting the angles right.
  2. You simply have to name him Chris Shroome
  3. As much as I'd love to, I'm not even close to that level of fabricating. Unless one buys a hardware kit, sure I've seen one somewhere on the intertubes. I'm thinking of something along the lines of a 7-8 foot diameter round table, with a removable lazy Susan centrepiece that hides a 'gaming' pit. Place where you can place your board, roll the dice etc. 8 foot might be a little large for it though, but I'd like to be able to seat 10 people around it. Thinking caps on!
  4. I'm leaning towards a proper bastardization between these two: https://offermanwoodshop.com/project/zeus-wagon-wheel/ https://offermanwoodshop.com/project/zeus-wagon-wheel/
  5. Ooh ... think I found my next project's inspiration: https://wyrmwoodgames.staging.wpengine.com/prophecy-2/
  6. No, I don't use pipe clamps myself. I'm rather fond of my heavy-as-a-dead-donkey cheap-as-chips bar clamps from Adendorff's. Some shops might do cutting and threading for you on plumbing pipe, but the beauty/simplicity of pipe clamps are supposed to be the ability to use standard lengths off the shelf.
  7. Warning - mini-rant / complaining-with-silver-spoon-in-mouth / brag ahead. Look, I REALLY don't mind more than doubling my annual turn-over last year, (brag) but I'd just about kill to do some proper woodwork again. Something along these lines - taking a month or two on a single project, and being able to do the RIGHT thing the RIGHT way (and not have to worry about it getting too expensive to sell) OK, rant off. New workshop is coming along sweet, been welding (and grinding) my ass of to make new workbenches. Nothing fancy unfortunately, just postform tops on steel frames. Also picked up some PVC interlock mats this morning - if anyone is interested, got them from Matlock in Rosslyn Pta for ~R75 per square meter. They also do edging strips and some quarter-size coloured mats.
  8. Sheesh ... I stop all big machines at 17:00 every weekday. Lathe, drillpress and one of my big sanders can still go, but only till 19:30 or so then I switch them off (they are connected to a noisy dust extractor) I REALLY don't want **** from the neighbours. And I live in a normal suburb.
  9. Ah Gripseal - still one of my favourites when I need to colour some wood. I've sprayed it very successfully as well - well most of them in any case. Some of the darker tones and ALL of the super glossy/glitter tones (like glowing coal) have large particles in that clogs the filter on my spray guns. And of course, this affects the shininess of the finished product - glowing coal loses all it's sparkle and comes out a (actually pretty beautiful) silver. You can thin it with water if needed. The absolute best way to apply is with a sponge, but you need to learn how to work it into corners without too much build-up, and how to feather for overlaps. It tends to almost double in darkness if you over-wipe (is that even a word?) I prefer spraying it for a really even coat. The lighter colors takes two to three decent coats to really cover wood. Some great effects can be made with a very thinned down (50:50) mix of the dark colors on a light wood - you get a burnt/faded effect if applied with a brush or sponge.
  10. Piggy in action End result (Achar bread)
  11. Did an oxtail potjie on Sunday with vegetable soup, first time I tried a 'thickened' potjie and may very well be the very last time. I'm not a fan of oxtail in the first place, but the thick gravy ruined it for me. Wife and kids all had more than two helpings each so I may be the odd one out I bought myself one of those 'varkie oondjies' at a christmas market, the ones you bake bread in. Man that thing is lekker. Bread dough in pan, close it, 18 briquettes on top and sides, and 40 minutes later baked bread. Think I might try a breakfast bread tomorrow morning.
  12. No, the original 'Kalahari/Latent' personalities. Or has he morphed (again) into someone else?
  13. Lekker - picked up 5 new postform tops for the new workbenches in the new place @R570 ea, delivered ... but ***, as the one friggin lawyer used two different dates on his submission to the deeds office ... transfer rejected and has been resubmitted. Anyone here with contacts at the deeds office to get this **** DONE already? The old owner refuses to move out until registration is complete, so I have to hang bal until then. FFS.
  14. And anyone know what happened to Kalahari? Haven't seen/heard in ages.
  15. Indeed, I woke the waaif and kiddos at 2 o'clock this morning. Geminid showers. Was cool to watch for an hout, but now I'm hit with the moegies
  16. I'm loving the new Assassin's Creed Origins - more RPG than before. Don't really dig the way the climbing has changed (last played Black Flag), but I reckon for the other new goodies it's a good tradeof. Anyone else on PS4?
  17. Because she's dead, Fred. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_Queen I was in George's Valley when she died ... the drums literally shook the windows in the house ... must be 20km's distant.
  18. That's very very nice ... damn.
  19. They only close the 22nd of December, and current lead time is ~6 days.
  20. Soooo it looks like everyone finally pulled finger on our new home - registration docs was submitted this morning after endless hoops, loops and poops to jump over/in/through. Lawyer reckons that we should be able to move in next weekend. Guess I better start packing
  21. That's pretty, and useful. Did you epoxy the brass to the wood?
  22. Most polyurethane based varnishes should be heat resistant, good enough for a cuppa.
  23. You know, there's a pill for that?
