  1. Has the grapevine been fertilised?
  2. ? You accusing me of doping Colonel? ? What do you want us to say? I was dissapointed to see the news yesterday but I am pretty sure that there others doping in all categories of the sport and at all levels. Just because one member of a team or club is tested positive does not mean the entire club is doping. ? If a member of Cyclelab club was caught using some substance would it imply that all 2000 odd members were using substances. ? I can only speak for myself and those close to me that I am personally friends with and I can assure you that none of those people are doing anything illegal. ? Ian, unfortunately this is one of the ramifications of being caught doping. It damages everyone. People should think about what has happened here. Is 6th place at the Bakwena Superclassic really worth the permanent label of 'cheat' and tainting those around you that have supported you and helped you. Do you value your reputation and friendships less than sixth place in Bakwena? (rhetorical question). I don't know many of the TCS guys, but those that I do (Carel, Spinnekop etc) probably don't deserve to be tarnished, but they have been. Did Eben think about that? The rumours have been out there, pleading ignorance is no excuse and people need to learn from this.
  3. One of the biggest benefits is just this. If willehond is training wrong, it will reflect in his results. He now has a perfect log of exactly what he did, so he knows not to do it next time. Alternatively, someone else can have a look at his files and suggest improvements. bruce2009-01-08 12:42:00
  4. Graeme was with Andrew, but Andrew rode solo from just after getting onto the highway, probably about 30km to go.
  5. Listen, a power meter does not change your genetics. Some people have the genetics to go fast on the bike, whether it is fitted with a power meter or not. If you are the type of person that uses information to improve the way you do things, then a power meter is great. If you aren't inclined to spend the time figuring all of this out, then a PM is a waste of money, unless you want to hire a coach to do that for you. Athletes at all levels can benefit from training better, I'm willing to bet most of the guys here who poo-poo powermeters have dropped more than twice that on the bike they ride.
  6. Colonel, is Scott in Qatar now? Thought he was in Abu Dabi (or however you spell that!!)

  8. Was definitely Christoph. I took a small detour from the Engen2Engen to meet up with the DCM Chrome guys, and he was riding with them.
  9. Okay, so I finally got the update to make my wireless powertap 2.4 Ant+Sport compatible. Updated the hub no problem, then got the Garmin 705 paired with the power meter. There are a couple of gotcha's. 1. You must change the 'Bike Profile' in the Garmin to tell it that you have a powermeter, it's no use just trying to scan for a power meter in the Ant+Sport menu. 2. You can no longer zero the torque while you are coasting, you need to be stopped. The power data is slightly smoothed by the Garmin, causing it to under-read normalised power by a few percent. Garmin are looking in to this issue and hopefully will update the firmware. The speed data is very spiky, see included pic. Lastly, I had a problem applying the firmware update to the PowerTap CPU to make it work with the updated hub. Have finally resolved it, it was a java library version problem, so I had to do a little bit of hacking (hell I miss my programming days!).
  10. Exactly! Just imagine if Lance had been bust for EPO in 1999. Then the whole world would be riding big gears and low cadence, 'cos Uli would have been the greatest cyclist ever.
  11. I was going to mention red herrings, but I'll leave that till later.
  12. Okay, that document has a few misnomers. Fibre recruitment is more correlated with intensity (power as a percentage of VO2Max) than it is with cadence. This is because even at very low cadence, the forces in pedaling are significantly less than maximal muscle force. When googling for references on this topic, I found a very recent quote on the BikeRadar forums from Coggan, "An additional consideration here is that the minimal force at which a particular motor unit is recruited isn't fixed, but is dependent upon the speed of the movement (or actually, the intended speed of the movement). As a result, the pattern of motor unit recruitment is more closely related to the power output than it is to the cadence, and hence force, used to produce that power output. (IOW, pedaling faster doesn't necessarily reduce type II motor unit recruitment, because even though the force required to produce a particular power is lower, the minimal force at which type II motor units are recruited is also decreased.) "
  13. Very interesting, those wattage numbers are massive.
