  1. Both.. but I would go with the Latter One has just started with a new coach and the mileage is insane... 45km + run every weekend since mid Jan so far and he has already run 3 x Sub3 marathons this year.. No Chance I could cope with that kind of Mileage and pace... I didn't even do 1 sub3h15 marathon in my lead up to silver last year.. 3 marathons and 1 ultra all at Training pace.. Sep-Nov are the Months to RACE a Marathon... again in my opinion.
  2. Looks about right to me. I've run my 4 on 900/1100/1300 and 2100 and they were Bronze 9h09/ BR 8h46/ BR 8h03 and Silver 7h01 I have some Mates looking for silver this year that have already gone past 1200kms and are heading close to 3000km come race day... but that's just madness in my opinion
  3. I personally Like the PowerBar Gels... Better tasting, not as Gooey, and a double re-sealable opening so you can take small sips and run with them for a while without them leaking I would generally drip feed one sachet with water over 3 -4 water points so would last me a good 10-15km per gel in the 2nd half of Comrades.. Apple and Black current ones have the caffeine so those are best IMHO.
  4. Thanks Scott-M, yep great fast course, ran my 21km PB there last year (76.08) in the height of Comrades training. Will be a different experience this time just trying to run a comfortable pain free 1h45.. after that 8 weeks to London... Will look out for you.. We will be in an RAC bus, got my old Training partners to commit to Nursing me round my first race back..
  5. Vaal 21 Sunday... 1st race back... Exciting stuff
  6. Hey Scott Yep I got mine, my wife's and my folks from my Club (RAC) on Tuesday the 17th January already
  7. I did However Try a lot of Brands to get to the Boosts.. I think I have a problem
  8. I left Asics Nimbus a few years back (after using them for about 10 years) to find a Lighter Training/Comrades shoe. Last year I did all my Training (2100kms Jan-29 May) in the Adidas Boston Boosts. Went through 3 pairs (just over 600km each @ around R1400-) by end of April and ran Comrades in the 4th Pair with around 150kms on them. No problems at all.. they about 245gms to the Nimbus 17 @ 310gms But I am only about 65kgs and pretty light on my feet. I race up to Marathon in the Brooks T7 which is an Out and out racer @only 181gms
  9. But checked the list , I'm all Good...
  10. Me too only exercise induced though
  11. Not 100% sure of the date for 2017 (too depressed keeping my head in the sand) But I think it "may" be the weekend after Oceans this year. Keep an eye on the below link (still last years flyer at the moment) http://www.collegiansharriers.co.za/RouteTester.pdf Its organized by Hillcrest Harriers and Collegians
  12. There's still a Few about Om die Dam 50km Two Ocean 56km Loskop 50km Old Slowmag 50km (has a new sponsor this year) and now the new Irene 48km that is fast/flat and is good for seeding as seeding times are based on a 48-50km bracket. and if you up for a Roadtrip the Official Comrades Route Tester runs from Hillcrest to PMB this year on the last 61kms of the route... R50 and fully supported with roving waterpoints etc. We did it last year and its worth the trip
  13. Thanks Hacc, Appreciate it, yeah No rush... I have an entry and my seeding from CT Marathon, so could decide Last minute if need be..
  14. As an Athlete any injury that keeps you off the Roads for any period of time is significant in my opinion....
  15. Yeah that is very much a Consideration right now.. haven't done an Ironman or 70.3 since 2013 and been itching to go back. And as Its so Close to Comrades I always thought the Durban one would not be possible.. I think by the end of Feb I should have a good idea of Progress and will then make a call. I love the Comrades and this would be my 5th but the chances ill line up this year are very very Slim...... I didn't do 15 weeks of Physio 3x a Week/Swimming/Rehab/Theraband sessions/ hire a Recover4u Compression machine for 3 months etc etc etc to cock it up now with being too rash... And getting in shape for a Fast 21km will be a lot easier than a slow 90km.
  16. Thanks Scott.. your a Champ... Yep 100 Days later.. longest 14 weeks of my life.. Spent the first 10 on full crutches, week 11 was down to 1 Crutch and the last 3 I've slowly progressed from walking just a few 100m , to slowly adding a few slow jogs, to now as Scott says up to a 5km Jog. Had my Final app with the Surgeon yesterday and after a last set of xrays I got the Good to go to get back to Gym (cos my leg has disappeared) Running and Some Cycling (if I wanna brave the roads so maybe Watt Biking). He says Femur is at 100% and I can get the 5 Screws and Plates out on the 8th March.. so that will be nice too. Now the next 15 weeks starts trying to get myself back to a level of strength and fitness to keep to my promise of Jogging London Marathon with the wife on 23rd April. 21 weeks to Comrades is sooooo tempting.... I had written it Off but may be possible if i accept it will be a slower one
  17. Haha, you guys are Champs... 7 weeks... been long and pretty damn frustrating but I'm seeing some light at the end of this Tunnel. Had a set of 6 weeks x-rays done on Monday and looks like ill be weight bearing 3 weeks early at 9 weeks instead of 12... So Yeah hit the pool the last 2 weeks to try and get some Cardio fitness back to go along with all my strength rehab... Hopefully Walking by December and Jogging by the end of January... Aim is still to Walk/Jog/Drink myself round London marathon in April with the wife (5hrs ish),and then try and build some pace up for a 2017 Good year end Marathon . Then hopefully Back to Oceans and Comrades in 2018.. Hard pill to swallow after my great 2016 results but I know its the right thing to do..
  18. Haha, well Funnily enough... my wife got there before the ambulance and took me to the hospital... En Route I ended my workout on my 920xt which in turn uploaded the ride to strava.. So you can actually see, if you zoom right in, the point of Impact on the strava file..
  19. Thanks everyone, gonna be a long 3 months Stretch, he did stop, but was very suspect, parked his car about 50m down the road and leaned against his boot looking on, when the witnesses that had seen the whole accident started shouting at him to do something, he just kept shouting from a distance "I didn't see him". To add a little extra I was travelling with the traffic on a sidewalk pavement of a main road , and was crossing another side road by jumping off into the road and back on the pavement. I did this in front of the Witness car waiting to pull out who gave me right of way to cross as the road they were turning left into was busy.... The Raider came from in front of me and took a small gap to turn right across the traffic and T-Boned me... hope that makes some sense.... I don't remember any impact but the witness account is as above.. and last thing I remember is her giving me right of way.. I digress, so then when they shouted at him to call an ambulance or put my bike and me in his Double cab and take me to hospital he rather chose to go home 1 block away and come back In a different vehicle.. All very odd. Then when I called him yesterday (the witness got his number/reg no for me) after coming out of hospital to ask for the accident report number... he said he hadn't reported it as it hadn't even crossed his mind, even though his grill and headlights were damaged.. Took me a few attempts just to get his Id number and Drivers license from him for the Police Accident report...... Something is a little odd.. left it with the police to investigate for now
  20. Be Nice... 12 weeks to the Day from my Op would be 25 December - Xmas day ... Merry Merry
  21. Quick Story of Woe, as I might not be frequenting this pages as often to keep myself sane.. Chiro Recommended during my semi off season to maybe add some cycling back into my routine just twice a week to give the Achilles some change of scenery.. Took bike out with 16 months of dust (last rode day 3 Sani2c 2015), got it serviced and ready to ride... Went out Saturday lunch for a quick 90mins before the Rugga, was 1km from home...... Woke up laying in the road in agony with a lot of people shouting... Helmet in 4 pieces, S-Works in Half.. Long story short, some Guy in a Toyota Raider Jumped a stop street, T-Boned me at about 60kph without him braking, or me even seeing him coming.. Ended in ICU, surgery Sunday morning, broken Distal Femur and plate and screws inserted. Seeing Surgeon again tomorrow now the swelling has gone down a bit to see if the ACL or MCL are still intact and in good condition.. Crutches, No walking/driving for 12 weeks .. Spose it could have been alot worse Kaapse Out, LUT out.... wondering if London marathon, Oceans and Comrades 17 are just pipe dreams now... Be Safe out on the roads...
  22. See a few articles below about the ITB Itself and "Should you roll an ITB" from Mike @ SBR He along with many other Specialists are adamant the ITB should NOT be rolled with a foam roller https://sbrsport.me/2012/09/26/what-is-itb/ https://sbrsport.me/2014/03/13/should-you-foam-roll-an-illiotibial-band/ I use Mike often for Myofascial Release and other Niggles and IMHO he really knows his stuff
  23. I agree Completely with the fact Quality is as much or if not more Important than Quantity But you do need to get in the Base Miles IMHO 800 - 1100kms is perfect if you just want to finish Comrades, but on that Mileage the last 30kms will completely be a mental game I think for a BR you need to look in the 1200 - 1400km Range, But again keep the Quality. When you start talking Silver the Number needs to be Closer to the 1800-2200km Range as you need that endurance to be able to run a constant pace right through the 90kms and not be hanging on at any time.. The Faster your top end speed is at any time over a 8km TT , the faster your Long Run endurance pace will get... Edit ---- Of Course there are many exceptions to all those Guidelines..
  24. For me Personally I do 2 distinct blocks of Training each year. 1 January to Comrades - Ill be looking for about 2150kms again as it seemed to work for me this year Then Take June off Completely - did 52km in total this year Then 1 July - Mid September - this is my 11week block into a Fast qualifier Marathon, then I usually rest 2 weeks and then do another 5 weeks into Kaapse, and finish off November with some Trail running. Take most of December for consolidation - 40-50kms weeks with 2 weeks off completely from around 11th - Xmas... So to answer your question maybe some of those Club Mates doing the 70-80km weeks may be in there Higher mileage phase for their qualifying marathons in November..
