I had 2 Hansoms in the 80's. First one was a CS (carbon steel!) with the first shimano index gearing, and the second was a Reynolds 653 with full Shimano 600 groupset. Both were magnificent machines in their day!

I ride a GT Marathon 1.0, and reckon at the price, a Marathon 2.0 would be a great deal.

cptmayhem, if you negotiate well, you may get a GT Marathon 1.0 for around R16k, which may be worth being R1k over budget. The white frame of the Marathon 2.0 looks cool, but check the spec/value for money on the Marathon 1.0

I agree mtbking81. Unfortunately I can't afford to ride what I think is the ultimate bike, but not many of us can, and without riding them, how do you know what's best? So, until then, the bike I buy is the best for me.

Brand loyalty is amazing. A lot of people justify their decision by saying what they've got is the best. (if they didn't think so they wouldn't have bought it). To get an unbiased opinion is virtually impossible. Fortunately their are a lot of makes of bikes that all have their share of supporters - or we'd all ride the same bikes. Whatever bike I buy, I believe to be the best in it's class/price.

I recently (about 2 months ago) got a GT Marathon 1 and am stoked. I think that the GT's do come better spec'd than the comparative competition.

I'm in the market for a Garmin Edge 305 or 705 (my hrm just packed up, so thought I would go this route). Is the 705 worth the extra cash, and what's a "good" price for the bundled (with cad and hrm) units.
