  1. Is Silvermine West already open / opening this month? It's not clear from this extremely vague statement.
  2. Now I know why I haven't bothered with the level of debate on this site for 2 years.
  3. By way of contrast, I submit to you the example of one Pieter Calitz - ex-tennis pro, now coaching for a living. Pete cycles as a secondary sport, drinks a lot of beer, but can still out climb pretty much everybody in Cat 2, and keep up with the elite bunch as well when necessary. This year he gave half ironman a bash, just for a hoot, having never done any competitive swimming and just one half marathon and just missed the podium with 4th in his age group, 58th overall in an international field of about 2500.
  4. Who are we talking about? Anything else is off topic.
  5. Are you still forced to walk up the stairs and hunt for an exit, or can you grab your entry and GTFO the front door if you want?
  6. Are food sales still policed by Pick n' Pay? ie. no food for sale if it's not Pn'P food.
  7. Does the expo have a bike park yet? Might be an idea if not - parking seems like a stupid problem to have.
  8. Anyone know when WP Champs is this year? Presumably in the next month, but there seems to be zero info online as to the dates. Just trying to plan my life here and the wife is demanding I let her know in advance, but clearly the organisers don't agree that we should get any kind of prior warning about this - usually under-subscribed - event (I wonder why no-one comes?).
  9. I'm holding out for the BMW range. Then when I ride like a **** at least I'll be sitting on top of the right bike for the job.
  10. We asked JP to let you guys go, and at first Aurecon let it stretch out, but I think he realised he needed the points. Having done the maths myself he did the right thing as it looks to me like Andrew Payne is still winning this thing by 4 points.
  11. We just trimmed the bunch down trying to make life easier for our GC guy. We were not keen for a big bunch sprint down that narrow road. I put it in the gutter, then when I came off the front Moolies attacked and a small group of us rode an echelon off the front. About 10 to 15 guys came across to us after that.
  12. Sorry about that! it was a bit more than 50. I think I was around 8,9 or 10th in the end.
  13. I thought it was a great race. Smashed the **** out of it and it felt grand. The weather was lovely and sunny with a gentle breeze. Did not notice or care where the PPA mats were - which was lucky as it seems to have ruined some people's day.
  14. Yes, I'm aware of this - I thought my last post made this clear - I don't eat much grains or wheat. Yes, I'm aware of this too, which is the reason I put the blame on corporatisation of food, how it's processed, packaged and marketed. I don't eat big brand muesli for exactly these reasons. I did say sugar and wheat free muesli in my previous post. based on your post, it sounds like I'm already doing it, without having read any books on the subject Ok, fair enough
  15. I'm not calling anyone stupid and I've been on here a while, just not on this thread. Best of luck to anybody with health issues. I'm challenging the demonising of all carbohydrates - a charge apparently led by Noakes. In my opinion the problem is not the carbs themselves, but how they are packaged, marketed and the quantities in which they are consumed. Cutting out all carbs - if that is really what is being proposed - perhaps that's not the case? - is still daft in my opinion, and also pretty much impossible. Personally my approach is to cut out - processed food & sugar wherever possible - gluten and wheat as much as possible - high GI carbs (unless you're doing high intensity exercise) - lower my intake of grains & pasta Cutting out all carbs is an extremist approach, and perhaps most importantly for the average person, is going to be very hard to maintain and integrate into your day to day eating in the long term. Eating habits that cannot be sustained, in combination with your body's natural homeostatic inclinations, are likely to lead to you ending up back at square 1.
  16. Ok, gluten intolerance is one thing, and I don't eat much bread, flour or sugar. But cutting out all carbs is another thing altogether and I can't see how such an extreme approach would be wise, especially for an athlete or someone who is very active. I eat very little sugar and a lot of low GI stuff, but I'm still taking in carbs - it's inevitable and I don't see the problem if they are not processed **** - obviously you have to work quite hard to avoid that crap, but that is the nature of the corporate food machine.
  17. Fair enough. What is this 'white rubbish' of which you speak though? I honestly don't know how you would cut out all carbs. What is wrong with whole rolled oats, wheat and sugar free muesli and so forth? That's all I eat pretty much every day for lunch / breakfast and I feel great.
  18. I suppose my body is 'fat adapted' as I don't train on much more than water and ride mostly in the morning before I eat. I drink full fat milk, eat proper butter and don't bother with 'low fat' foods, however I am still of the firm opinion that cutting out all carbs is ******* stupid. Just don't eat processed crap. Why cut them all out? Daft in my opinion.
  19. Winning time in Cat 2 was 13.20 odd 1. Sakkie Hanekom 2. Andrew Payne 3. Pete Calitz .. not sure about the rest
  20. U16 08:00:00 Interclub 08:06:00 Open 08:27:30 Ladies 08:32:30 Masters 08:38:00 Vets 08:44:30 CAT2 09:13:00 CAT1 09:43:30 Report to the starter timeously because: There will be a 30 sec gap between each starter. If a rider is not on the start line as per the starting order, the next rider will take start, hence you might start before your predicted start time. Please ensure you are at the starting line and take note of any absentee starters. You may not warm up on the route – you will be disqualified
  21. Lots of people won't show so you can't rely on your start time as they will move it forward. It's all in the last mail they sent you.
  22. I lived in London 8 years and never held on to a bike more than 6 months, despite locking them up everywhere. Last one was taken, locked up, from the central reservation in Oxford Street during Christmas shopping, with thousands upon thousands of people trooping past the crime scene. By contrast, here in Cape Town I have never had a bike stolen. In the UK - or at least in London - street level bike theft is much more organised, efficient and profitable than what you get here. Whether it's kids steeling old clangers from lamp posts, or white vans cruising Upper Street looking for £5000 bikes, if you leave it in public, it will go eventually, and will probably show up on a weekend market shortly afterwards with a respray. Of course here we have bakkies that drive through the LBS front window at 4am in the centre of town and load up, although this is not something that affects individual owners.
  23. 1. get 6 reprints 2. hang all 7 in the bog on some cheap hangers - for when you run out of paper 3. Take a selfie on the can with no paper in the hanger 4. Tweet wonderball to see what he thinks
  24. Agree the marshalls were shockingly bad - less noticeable during the race, but went for a ride after to witness marshalls either doing nothing at all or talking **** on cellphones, utterly oblivious to roadgoing traffic, while motorists and cyclists alike tried to find their way around each other at intersections.
