  1. Silverback Spyke 24 is a great bike. My daughter has the 20" version thereof. A more expensive alternative is the Momsen JSL40.
  2. Love my 26" Trance. I will eventually upgrade to an 29" bike, but I am going to ride my Trance until my daughter outgrows a 24" bike and I can pass it onto her. Really nice bike, at a very competitive price point.
  3. Looking forward to the race, even if its just two or three small bunches of super quick people with me languishing right at the back. Lovely part of the country.
  4. Me too, and I am a (slow) E group rider at best. I am going to get run over Flattering, but this must surely be a mistake
  5. Snap. I think this is very important advice. Carry a medical aid card or an ICE id-type bracelet with the relevant info on.

No, I checked the article, and they said there were a total of "just under 14,000" riders, with 10,000 doing the main event. =107961"]http://www.witness.co.za/index.php?showcontent&global[_id]=107961 Seems high to me

Out of interest, how many people rode the Amashova this year. I read somewhere there were 10,000 riders on the 106km race, but RaceTec only lists 4,279 finishers. Even accounting for no-shows and dnf's, it does not sound likely that there were that many registrations.

In my case, yes. There is a setting on Garmin Connect and on Strava that allows you to choose elevation correction on or off. Usually I find this gives results that correlate closely with those other people publish. In this case, my figures are a bit higher.

With elevation correction on, I got 1,427m elevation and 2,017m descent on my Garmin Edge. Distance 103km. The same gpx. file on Strava, with its elevation correction, gives an elevation of 1,538m. I suspect 1,100-1,200 is closer to the truth.
  10. Garmin has a product that does just this, the VIRB Sports Camera. $400 on Amazon, not sure of local pricing. See: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/08/garmin-initial-thoughts.html for a comprehensive review

    Amashova 2013

The wind was a bit of a bother, but it was great to ride in cool weather. I found last year much harder because of the incessant heat.
  12. It's $1,699 in the US, so R21,000 seems likely.
  13. Depends entirely on what you buy from Wiggle: clothing attracts much higher duties foe example. The topic has been discussed extensively on The Hub. Do a search.

  15. Snap: I got effectively the same, 1175 elevation and 93.22kms.
  16. I emailed them over the weekend. Waiting for an answer. Will phone on Wed if they have not replied by then.
  17. Indeed, you are right. My apologies for not checking first before I posted. Its a nice touch. I have emailed them to request a change of entry
  18. Seems like the route change is a good idea, but Its unfair and not very professional to do it long after entry's were open. I signed up for the 94km, and wouldn't have entered had it been 80km. Perhaps as a compromise the organizers can let those who entered under the original distances to choose whether to be moved to either the 80km or the 106km group.
  19. Here is a link to a thought provoking article on the relative benefits of aero wheels, as compared to simply lighter wheels: http://alex-cycle.blogspot.com/search?q=aero
  20. Hi Didier I will be riding for Hi Hopes again this year as well. Great organisation and a well organised charity group at the Amashova.
  21. Thanks for the lecture. On what basis can you say that the studies referenced here are guilty of this methodological error? Lets be clear, I am not disagreeing that many pharmaceutical companies make false or grossly exaggerated claims about their products. They do so all the time, and it is totally unacceptable. That is Bad Science indeed. What we are discussing is whether the particular references to numerous published clinical trials reported on here are guilty of so doing. I am not a medical doctor, and am not in a position to reach a conclusion either way. I am however fairly sure that posting a reference to a Ted Talk claiming (correctly) that some companies are guilty of Bad Science is not the same as demonstrating that this particular company is guilty of Bad Science. We rightly expect pharmaceutical companies to embrace evidence based methodologies and back up their claims. Its only fair for us to do the same.
  22. I am as sceptical as anyone, but to be fair, they do publish links to a number of actual clinical studies, published in reputable journals. Are you saying they have "absolutely no scientific backup" because you did not notice the links to published studies, or because you have read the published studies and concluded that they provide "absolutely no scientific backup"
  23. Garmin should use GPS measurements to automatically calibrate wheel size. My Edge did this, not sure how or whether I ever set it to use both the magnet and the GPS, but it obviously did.
  24. Good for fitness, but losing weight is 90% diet, and 10% exercise
  25. Further to TK's post, thanks also to the organisers for including an 150km option for the elite riders (not me I am afraid). If SA riders are to succeed in Europe they need to race longer and tougher races.
