  8. THE TRAMWAY SHIELD Way back in 1898 the Tramway Company of Cape Town donated the princely sum of £50 to City Cycling and Athletic Club to purchase a trophy, from Vaughtons Ltd of England, to be known as the Tramway Shield. To this day the Tramway Shield is a hotly contested event among South Africa’s top track cyclists. Due to the Boer War the Tramway Shield got off to a delayed start and was first contested only in 1903. In those days it was a mile race competed for by cyclists with fashionable curly moustaces which matched their curly handlebars! Then along came another war, the First World War, and the Tramway Shield was not competed for between 1914 and 1919. From 1920 to 1936 race format remained but in 1937 it was changed to a four man team pursuit race where riders of each team would take it in turns to pace each other over one mile. Then along came another war, The Second World War, and the Tramway Shield went into hibernation again this time from 1941 to1944. From 1945 to this day the Tramway Shield has been held as a 4 man team pursuit with the Paarl based Yorkshire Wheelers holding the record time. In 2004, for the first time, the Tramway Shield took on the exciting format of the Team Sprint. This event was held over three laps of Bellville Velodrome a distance of 750 metres. In the Team Sprint each team lines up 3 abreast on the track two held up by officials whilst the lead out man starts at the bottom of the track in a starting gate. All three riders start together with the second and third man slotting in behind the lead out man as quickly as possible. After one lap he peels off and his job is finished, the second rider completes another lap and then peels off to let the third rider compete his third lap on his own. Fastest team wins.

    Argus vs 99er

the 99er is reverting back to the old route which i assume won't take in the Hok.
  15. the article in the Argus quotes Lance Burger of the ppa, and he advocates that cyclists can run red lights / stop streets when its safe but should stop when there is traffic around. eish sometimes.......the same drivel was advised the other day by some non motorised advocacy group. can't remember the women's name.
  16. they were hitting the summer southern suburb events a few years ago. the events that started at FB Rugby club were popular with thieves.
  17. Remember, if you enter a PPA event but you are not a ppa member then you pay extra (the amount differs from organiser to organiser and you also buy a temp number at R5 for the event. same with CSA events, CSA members pay the entry fee and non CSA members take out a day license at R35 for the event. both organisations need to sit down together and stop acting like spoilt brats and work out a solution to our problems here in the cape. we are the only region that has a PPA and a CSA affiliate, all other regions just have a csa affiliate and event promoters. i pay subs to ppa and the csa affiliate. event if ppa are taken back into the CSA structures my financial pmts to both would remain the same. CSA is the national body and ppa imho should affiliate to the regional csa affiliate and i should have the choice of belonging to either the ppa or the csa affiliate (ie club).
  18. the distance of the burger is within the recommended distance that junior elite race (max of 120k's) and he is (should be) riding on restricted gears ie 53x14. u14's shouldn't race more than 40k's , u16's not more than 80. sorry did not see earlier post wrt gears. great result for the youngsters.
  19. excellent - a good idea is also to have him ride juvenile gears on the road. i know that the ppa don't bother too much with these issues but in the long run it teaches the youngsters good cycling technique and it saves the 'undeveloped ' legs and back from too much stress. before you know it he'll be spinning like a pro.
  20. Proudly Saffa
  21. i did a 2.52 from D , lost my legs in the last 10 k's and limped home. too busy organising than riding races this year and i'm feeling it. to all the father's letting their young sons race the 92 k's , rather let them ride the short event (esp when one is available) and have them race good quality miles. i have an article from the British Cycling Fed giving advice to parents with aspiring young cyclists. pm me if you want to read it.
  22. can u expand on ride protocol ie is there back up? do you regroup on the 2nd polka hill? wdo you take note of traffic signals or just ignore them?
  23. cyclist are allowed to cycle on a freeway (part of the Argus route is on a freeway) but require permission. i have been involved in quite a number of social tours that have taken in high / freeways. i believe that if your group exceeds 10 riders you need to have permission to use the road and have a following vehicle. iow if you ride from PE to CTown on the N2 freeway , you would need to apply to provincial traffic and all the various municipalities along the way. but in saying that i have ridden back from the Knysna Oyster Festival to C Town for the last few years with a group and we have never been stopped.
