  3. Ahhh Sevenoaks...last I was there was the gale of '87 when Sevenoaks became 1 oak....nearly lost my life living in a camper van pummelled by clay tiles!!!!
  4. It was without doubt the hardest 20clicks I ever done....the 6 of trudging along soft sandy dirt tracks after Rebels almost overshadowed the splendour of the other 14clicks...ALMOST....spectacular trail, grand scenery....original plan was 20 out and same 20 back, com'on 40 kms can't be that bad.....gravel bike faired well, NO bike was capable of riding the 6 we walked! So here's a tip...if you see the treads marks of a tractor, time to turn back!
  5. Coastal challenge...Chokka Trail, St Francis.... When you have to hikabike, best you ride carbon!
  6. Thinking of doing a tour when I get home, anyone know where I can get these style panniers from, looks like they can carry quite a bit of grub...
  7. Gonna miss the place.....
  8. Those GS movements are unreal, the sweep of the spring drive is mesmerising, grail right there..
  9. As #the nerd says, you basically get three types of watch movements, automatic (no battery, self-winding), manual (no battery but which you have to wind every few days depending on power reserve) or quartz which runs off battery...there is also solar out on the fringe but that is just the power system to drive a quartz. Regarding the movement itself , there are hundreds of movements out there, some you will find in a wide range of watches eg ETA, the biggest Swiss manufacturer, others are in-house such as Rolex/Patek Philippe ie brands who build their own. So the Russians watch-makers also have their own like Raketa, Poljot, Vostok.
  10. Nice Nav B flieger!
  11. Basically the fire bakes the soil, breaks down its physical structure, burns out all the organic matter and greatly reduces it's ability to retain water, almost making it hydrophobic (water repellant), the soil turns to dust, this was evident in the last major fire in Tokai....also the underground roots that you don't see that may be under the trail's get burnt and you get cave ins....fire is really destructive in a lot of ways but as we all know, it plays a big part in the regeneration of seed banks especially fynbos.
  12. Yip, pretty hard to get hold of, locally known as the "Panereiski" or "Amphibianerai"!!, the dial is great, sandwich-style and the lume will get you home on a dark night, if you hurry! Also great if your eyesight is failing..you know..."No I don't wear glasses, only at night, for reading".....
  13. Vlad sent this to me...better wear it for a day....
  14. Bucket list.....the video is quite long but watch it for some spectacular vistas of rural USA....
  15. Just invested in the Garmin Varia range, RTL515 in rear radar/light combo and UT800 up front...combo'ed with the Edge 830, its a tech geeks dream! Lots of settings but I'm riding mostly daytime at the moment, day flash for both has best battery life of between 16 and 20hrs...best part is they are set to both light up as soon as the Edge starts recording which is at 10km/h. when you stop recording, they switch off, when you switch off the Edge, they sleep with BT polling every so often, so minimal battery drain, which means as soon as you start up the Edge again, they hook up and work in a light network...there are widgets on Garmin Connect that allow you to override all the settings....also works with Garmin Fenix from 5 up, I believe. Rear light flashes randomly until car approaching from the rear is picked up by the radar then its goes disco! Radar is proving invaluable but have to be careful not to rely on it 100%! For pure night time riding, my Magicshine 2000 is bar mounted and the UT800 will be a great helmet mount cause you need that for nite MTB to look into approaching corners! Shine on!
  16. Nice, bit small...seen this...I like...comes with mounting bracket as well as extension to re-mount Garmin stuff! https://olympiccycles.co.za/product/topeak-compact-handle-bar-bag/
  17. Looking for recommendations for handlebar bag...must accommodate out-front Garmin with bike light underneath...would re-locate them for the right bag tho, Waterproof Accessible while riding ie no struggle with zip, rather a magnetic type flap Side pockets ie not a role-up Fit between flared drops Does such a thing exist?
  18. Yip, and downloadable GPX/FIT files would be supercool!
  19. Eerste Rivier to Seals?
  20. Sounds like a bit of an adventure then! Will be there in about a month...I suspect that the top dirt track is going to be the only way....will keep you posted! (and will carry a poffie stok!)
  21. Cool, I have walked that way down wild side before but never reached rebels and have seen that the lower coastal path does traverse some rock and beach areas, as you approach Rebels but there's a road from there up to the the upper access track which I'm guessing the homeowners use to get down there so I'll deviate up there then cut across to Oyster's. Here's the plan anyway, its out and back and the track transit up to the plateau is at WP 6..
  22. I would like my bike to take me... From St Francis (Seal Point) to Oyster Bay along the wild side...... Many moons ago when the road to Seals was still gravel from Humansdorp, there was a dangerous S-bend just after the second turn-off to St Francis Bay and the canals (caught me napping badly once and ended up in the bush with my yellow Passat station wagon!)... But I digress, at this point there was a turn off to the right that led down to Rebels Rust which is on the coast about halfway between Seals and Oyster Bay, a few fishing huts/houses and a great sandbar with barreling waves when the berg wind blows...So that road still exists but now starts at the St Francis field airport. It's not this route I'm looking at but the one that starts in Seals on the wild side (part of the Chokka Trail from what I gather) and meets this track at Rebels Rust..google shows a trail and then a track, most likely 4 x 4 country, to get you to the few houses there, going slightly inland to connect to Oyster Bay. Trailforks lists part of the route as Rocks to Rocks ridden by two guys last year and very recently... https://www.trailforks.com/trails/rocks-to-rocks/reports/ Has anyone ventured along that way either MTB or gravel biking? Will be there towards the end of March for some getaway time out.
