  1. It looks like a mission to set up and I will need a big room for my training buddies to run next to me
  2. What do you do with your Racetec chip on the second lap? I am thinking of doing two laps next year as I am doing my 10th 94.7 next year.
  3. I buy my running shoes 1 and half size bigger, because of my orthotics. I run with one pair of falke running socks. I put vaseline between my toes for long runs (42km and more) and I cut my toenails very very short. I have one toenail I always lose with Comrades, but generally (touch wood) I don't get blisters.
  4. Way too early for weather predictions. By Friday it might be 33 degrees, or even Argus weather.
  5. Our running club's gazebo is at the corner of Malibongwe and the right turn towards the Lion Park. If you are in need of beer I ran on the treadmill last night after Kaapse Hoop, still feeling my quads, that was painful. I prefer a long ride any day to a long run, recovery is definitely easier.
  6. I agree, I find it difficult to concentrate on running and cycling training (Respect to triathletes!). Running seems to help with the cycling.... except for sitting on my bum for so long.
  7. So, which cyclists with a running problem is having a cycling problem on the 20th of November? I am doing my 9th 94.7... Feeling a bit undertrained for a cycling race.
  8. I agree with Stretch. I joined a club before my first Comrades not to pay the temp license at races. I never went to the club or got involved. I was the "ghost" club member. I met most of the club members at the Comrades Braai two weeks before Comrades. I trained alone and was absolutely clueless when it came to running. I have become a very active member now, and we are one big happy family. I sometimes see my club mates more than my own family. There are lots of experienced runners in the club. Some running their 29th Comrades. You need to be part of a club to gain knowledge and also not to train alone. We help each other at races when the going gets tough. We also support each other and are happy with fellow club mates having a good day or running a PB, we also console the members having a bad day. You see people grow from being a walker, to a 5km runner, to a Comrades runner. We "kuier" after races and have braais once a month. I don't think you will get all of this from a virtual club.
  9. Apparently, clubs are upset about this, lots of emails flying around, and not just Team Vitality, but also Modern Athlete and other "virtual clubs". I know emails have been sent to CGA. Not sure if anything will happen as CGA is still getting the license fees. It is one of our club member's father. She ran the Kaapse Hoop Marathon, drove all the way back on Saturday to run the 21km with her Dad, who came all the way from Upington. He had a heart attack 2km from the finish. We are all devastated with her.
  10. Well done Andrew, to you and your wife. It is a great achievement and the best feeling in the world to finish your first marathon.
  11. My last race for the year is RAC Tough One (the 27th of Nov). I then keep my weekly kilometers between 40 to 50 km but at an easy pace for the whole of December (I agree with the gradual base training in Dec). I am going down to Mosselbay, so I normally enter one or 2 10km races). The real training starts in January when there is a race almost every weekend. You don't want to overdo it in December else you are tired in January. You need to rest and spend time with family/friends in December as it all changes from January to May.
  12. I don't even know where to start with my Kaapse Hoop report. All I can say it didn't go as planned. Nausea started at 18km and only got worse. First time ever I felt like bailing a race. My original plan was 3:45, finished at 4:25. The heat didn't help much, was hot and humid from the start. The last 4km felt like 10kms. So what I have learned from this race: 42km is far, long runs are important after Comrades. Get enough sleep before a marathon. 5 hours is not enough.Stick with your eating/ drinking plan, even if you don't feel hungry or thirsty.Your mind is very powerful. You can finish a race, even if you are only thinking about bailing.You are going to have bad races... learn from it and move on.Congrats Lexx on an amazing time at Kaapse Hoop.
  13. I don't drink Coke/Energade/Powerade when I train or during the day. I also don't like drinking it on a race as I am sure my body is not used to it. I only drink coke (and then I dilute it with water) the last 10km of a race when I need some energy.
  14. Good luck IceCreamMan, in 2014 my plan was to train for OMTOM only, but I ended up doing Comrades 6 weeks later. It is my favorite race, beautiful and the support is amazing. Try and take an extra sachet or two at the water point before Chapman's Peak. There is usually no water at the Chappies water point, and that is when you need it most. I remember giving one of my extra (very warm) sachets to an elderly man as he was seriously struggling up Chapman's Peak. After Chapman's Peak there are lots of support and I think they increase the number of water tables. Another tip: leave EARLY for the start, this year the traffic was absolute chaos. We just made it in time for the start.

  17. The battery only lasts 10 hours. (I guess that is motivation to always run Comrades under 10 hours...) I don't think the 620 captures metrics while swimming. Then again, I enjoy my 620, maybe I should wait a bit.
  18. I can't look at food or eat anything for up to two hours after a long run, and then I am dead hungry. A sports dietician suggested I drink Peptopro mixed with Energade not longer than half an hour after finishing a long run. I tried it two weekends ago and it tasted disgusting! It is very expensive but it seemed to help. I will try it again after Kaapse Hoop. (I guess I will get rid of the terrible taste by drinking alcohol )
  19. (Sorry for highjacking the Soweto Marathon discussion) I normally don't feel the discomfort while running with an HR Monitor. It only happens when you get into the shower afterwards. I am due for an upgrade as my Garmin Forerunner 620 lasts less than 10 hours. Seeing that bonus month is in December I guess it is a good time to upgrade (Christmas gift to myself). It is on my bucket list to do 70.3 in 2018... So my question is which watches should I look at and compare? ( I am a Garmin fan)

  21. Do you guys run a marathon with an HR monitor? I normally use my HR monitor for 21km or less. It is just too uncomfortable.
  22. It was 25 degrees at 6:30 am in Pretoria this morning. Almost died yesterday on a 15km run that started at 6. According to the weather predictions, it will be cooler from Wednesday...
