  1. Couldn't agree more Andrew!! My goals for the race was to feel good and not nauseous. Don't worry about the time, just complete the distance and to enjoy the race. My race summed up: Hottest Om die Dam to date, I didn't get nauseous I survived the distance!! The start was chaotic. It took us 4 minutes to get over the starting mat. I started with 2 of my club mates, one was doing her first ultra. We stayed together for 18kms. She was looking good so I chased her away and I had to do a loo stop. I probably ran a minute and a half slower than my normal ultra-marathon pace. I didn't feel sick at all and for the first time in almost a year and a half, I enjoyed running again, even if it was seriously hot (I can't explain the heat without swearing) and I was slow. I chatted with fellow runners, tried to get people walking before a waterpoint to run with me to the waterpoint. I just enjoyed the race without any time pressures. Saartjies was pure torture. I walked the whole hill and chatted and laughed away. My wheels came off just after Jasmyn (10km to go). No nausea, the distance just got to me... The furthest I have run this year was 26km... so 50km felt very far. I have never seen so many runners getting sick and lying under trees. I handed out my extra water sachets. The last 3 kilometers felt like a half marathon. I got so excited to see the last waterpoint as I thought it was the finish...O, no still 1 km to go... And then looking at my watch the finish was 200 meters further. I broke my own rule not to walk in the last kilometer. I went over the finish line in a time of 5:45 (mat to mat) My worst ODD time... but I couldn't be happier. I accomplished my goals for the day, and not to feel sick was the best feeling in the world. I needed this race to mentally convince myself that I can still do this. I rewarded myself with a "death by chocolate" ice cream (and a couple of ciders...)
  2. Still is a popular slogan at most running clubs. Couldn't agree more. Your only competitor in running is yourself, no one else. If you lose focus on this you won't enjoy running.
  3. Happy birthday, Stretch, hope you have a very special day and many more happy running years.

  5. I am just a tad behind schedule.... ???? I agree with Lexx... Feeling very guilty right now... Then again she is a pro. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  6. I know the feeling, it is difficult to stay motivated when all you do is run day in and day out. (Especially when you are struggling (like me)) I also like running on my own now and again, I see it as "me" time, but maybe you should get a training buddy. (Even if it is only for one or two runs a week) Do you do trail running? Are there not more interesting routes close by you can do over weekends? Maybe include some cross-training like cycling, going to the gym?
  7. We have club runs on Saturdays and Sundays in the Wild Wild West. We have lots of runners that cannot afford to do races every weekend, so we try and accommodate them. Any club run more than 21km we organize waterpoints, else we stop at garages. Speedy recovery Ferret. Can't believe that you had all that metal in your body!! Good grief! Will you every get on a bicycle again?
  8. Great article, especially for the novices.
  9. Link doesn't seem to work. What is the article's name?
  10. It sounds like you were on track with your training. I think you must rest the two weeks and then make a decision.
  11. I hope the OMTOM Organisers have put some plan in place. I am not going to be very happy traveling all the way to CT and not be able to run. A 100km/h wind will be difficult to face - at least we are not on bikes. Protests - well I guess we can run around an obstacle course made of rocks. Fires - we ran up Old Kaapse Weg two years ago. I feel gutted for the cyclists. I truly hope this won't ever repeat itself - not for CTCT or OMTOM.
  12. If it is not your first OMTOM then I am sure you know what it takes to complete the race and you know your body. REST the next two weeks and then you make a call. How many kms have you trained from January to now and what was your longest run?
  13. Thank you Lexx, I am feeling very relieved today. I started to believe it is in my head and I am imagining the nausea problem (as some people actually told me it is my head). The final test will be ODD... I haven't run a marathon as yet, this year... so Saturday is going to be tough. I am nervous and excited about it. Looking forward to not feeling crap while running.
  14. The good news is I didn't feel nauseous on Saturday and Sunday! I don't want to get too optimistic too soon. I went to the doctor on Friday and told her that Lenamet (100mg - S2) seems to be helping. She then prescribed Trustan 40 mg which is used to treat stomach ulcers and acid reflux. You drink it on an empty stomach. On Saturday morning we went for a 15km run. I drank the medication and felt great. No nausea. I was skeptical as it was a flattish route and we took it very easy before Sarens. Yesterday I drank it again and felt great, didn't feel sick at all. My legs were dead tired the last 3 kilometers... I also took a gel around 12km, and it didn't upset my stomach. Much easier to swallow. I really enjoyed Sarens. It was my first time doing the race. I prefer rolling hills and the route had lots of trees. I am not close to my normal pace but I still enjoyed it. Now to mentally prepare myself for ODD....
  15. A marathon for me starts at 28km... That is when you start running with your mind. Comrades it starts at 70km. If you run a comfortable 21km and you have done a 25km training run I think you are ready for a marathon.
  16. It looks like nougat and tastes like nougat (very sweet): http://www.racefood.co.za/product/cranberry-almond/ I am running Sarens 21km on Sunday, will try eating more often and play around with my eating and drinking strategy - I agree it can't get any worse. What do you eat at races Seabee? Gels?
  17. That is just amazing!! Well done Ferret, I am sure you will just get stronger and even faster every day. What is your PB on a 21km? I see the winning time yesterday was 1:07
  18. That is wonderful news, Scott! Even though it is a flat route you still work the whole way. IMHO I prefer the undulating type of routes... The water points were ok, it felt like it was every 2.5km and not the usual 3.5km. My garmin also measured 21.3 - which is bad if you want to run a PB. The potholes - What can I say... well I guess there is nothing the race organisers can do about this. We saw 3 runners changing their cars' tyres close to the start. One runner that passed me said it felt like a steeplechase with all the potholes. This was my first Vaal race. Don't think I will do it again. I prefer Sasol.
  19. Thank you Dav/d. I will send her a mail!
  20. Yesterday morning I had oats for breakfast. Yesterday was the first time I threw up while running. It was only water, no solids. I ate a racefood at 11km and drank rehydrate while passing the first two waterpoints. Maybe I should try eating something different instead of the racefood?
  21. How was Vaal guys? I started throwing up at 18kms and I decided to rather turn off for the 21km. It was such a humid day and I didn't feel good at all. Yesterday while waiting for my mates to finish the marathon I was totally gutted and felt very sorry for myself. This morning on my way to work I decided it is time to HTFU... starting today. The mind is more powerful than the body when running. I am not going to stop running and I will find the solution to my problem.
  22. Very interesting article!! I think I drink too much but it does not cause my nausea as I am drinking the same amount of water as before.
  23. I use HydraChoice. Tastes great and it has probiotics as well: https://dischem.co.za/product-view/3062/hydrachoice-sachet-creme-soda-5s
  24. Good luck Andrew, keep an eye on your heart rate, it will tell you if you are still sick.
