  1. Never mind a helmet, after my last wipeout, i am considering one of these for cycling... I have seen the benefit when my daughters have gone OTB so to speak, and then land on the jump, destroying it in the process, and then dust themselves off. I reckon there is a market in enduro / downhill. A lanyard attaches to the bar, and when you part company with the bike, you have an inflated jacket before you hit the deck. Downside is that the CO2 can costs around R500.00 a pop...
  2. RIP young man. Sadly, the answer is more than likely "never...." I commute on a motorbike all week, and the transgressions, disregard for rules, people not being "in then present", malicious actions to others; its beyond comprehension. I realize I am probably crazy to do it, given the people i am forced to interact with on the roads, but the 8 hours I don't spend behind the wheel make up for it, IMO. Whether on a bike or bicycle, we are at the mercy of poorly trained drivers, and poorly maintained vehicles. Be safe out there, and be kind & considerate to others.
  3. Any chance they are an American Classic wheelset? Seen this a few times on the front wheel, and they have all been towards that side of the fork. Be keen to hear.
  4. Hi Paul, I have spoken to cyclists in 3 incidents. Unfortunately can't give names (selective memory) or specific places, but in Gauteng. 1st was a group of cyclists that got attacked whilst riding through very long grass. 1 cyclist had a firearm and used it effectively after getting bumped off his bike. - 3-4 Perps left in haste. Cyclists unhurt & nothing taken. Lone cyclist riding next a busy/major round - perp walking towards him, shoots from quite a few meters away & hits the cyclists. Cyclist draws & fires back & perp killed on the spot. - no issue with the police. The other was well publicized in the papers & media, re guys going out & looking for the bike jackers. In these 3 examples, everything was different about each incident: unarmed / armed perps; remote location vs busy road; number of cyclists; etc. So there is no formula. You just have to be in that mindset unfortunately. When cycling alone, i stay away from tall grass and remote single track. In groups, I find that I let my guard down which is great, but not so great. This is Africa, so you have to be aware, always, unfortunately. But it is a choice to carry or not. Each confrontation is different with a myriad of possible outcomes. It just depends on whether you want to have a say in any of those outcomes. As an aside, from speaking to regular Joe's & seeing a few You Tube vid's on armed robberies: when the victim turns on the perp/s, and lead starts flying, the perp normally leaves the scene right pronto, & most of these average Joe's aren't on the range, firing of 1000's of rounds a week or being trained by the Navy Seal's... So the firearm does even out most situations, IMO. But it's a choice.
  5. Thanks for the heads-up Intern. Sometimes, not often, I smaak a waffle. As a side issue; but related; did the Yeti gents (Cyclic) manage to get the guys who stole their bikes, arrested? That would show whether the SAPS would be effective in such a case, even though its a complete bike, with serial numbers, etc.
  6. Have to agree with your last paragraph. Lots of pain in 2016 to come...
  7. My 2cents: go 2x10. Cheaper to run / greater range of gears, so less spinning on flats, and quicker change over to easier gears in an unexpected situation (coming round a corner and seeing a sharp climb).
  8. Not a great photo, but rather a photo of a great moment. Last night ride of 2015, with some legendary okes!
  9. Been off the bikes for a year or three, but it's time to get back into it... Looking forward to some adventure travels.
  10. Sincerely doubt it.... But since its Xmas and all, send some fresh beans over.
  11. Amazing how tastes vary... I quite enjoy the Woolies beans. Prefer the taste to that of Illy , Lavazza , Mokador. I haven't tried Truth yet.
  12. I wouldn't worry too much re safety. I am sure that it will be pretty busy during the holidays. Just don't leave your bike on a car, unattended.
  13. Tell him to ..... off! Sex & travel isn't really a bad idea, in the right circumstances. Scam
  14. Believe there will be a meet at Nelson Mandela bridge in JHB as well. Not sure of the time.
  15. Tomorrow boys and girls! Bring your bikes.
  16. Which one SimpleD? Never owned anything other than rigid or 100mm, so out of my depth here.
  17. Always liked the look of that bike, & what it stands for; but i was blessed with the unique ability of knowing where my talents stop. You guys in the WC are sorted when it comes to trails. #justsaying
  18. I used to live in Lonehill, and would make use of the grounds, until a warden approached me & told me it wasn't a good idea, in that a prisoner working in the fields could attack a cyclist, get into their gear & attempt a getaway. Sounded plausible. Back then, i was surprised the place had any prisoners, as security seemed to be very laid back, unless there was a sniper on one of the koppies...
  19. The Cotic's latest upgrade. SLR wheels. The AC were too flexi, to the point of rubbing the frame, when pushed hard. The Mavics have transformed this bike. Just need the knee to recover to the point that I can go back to 1x1.... Anybody running a 120mm fork on the Simple/Solaris?
  20. Please name the shop.... they deserve a punt. My Dakine were great gloves for gravel travel. Light and cool. Tks
  21. Think it's a Hexus2...
  22. This is my tool of choice. 16 tools / 167grams. Goes everywhere with the bike. Too scared not to. With my luck, the first time i leave it at home, the Cotic will need 14 of the 16 tools to get going again...
  23. Have to agree with GLuvsMtb. What the LBS and Scott have in terms of procedures, should in no way affect the client/end user. They should make good, regardless, and then take it up with their client, the LBS. I no longer have time for these companies & brands, who do their best to avoid responsibility. The OP made 2 mistakes IMO: Scott & DT Swiss...

    The Munga 2015

Can't wait for the day, when drone footage will be a reality. Seeing these guys suffer, as opposed to imagining it, would be next chapter.
