  1. Riding 32:18 on my 26". Probably time to graduate to 32:16, but found it a bit heavy going at Tokai.
  2. Love the video clip. Had me all choked up. Just made me want to go out and ride my SS in the rain. Wish I could make it.
  3. The best way to get your confidence up on Faerie Garden is to ride up it a couple of times, helps in a huge way in seeing the line at each bend, and also how to attack the bridge. The bridge can sense your fear , the moment you're off the attack you're on your a$$ . Find the line and ride it, keep momentum up and you should be ok. Great trail to learn on btw, I cut my teeth down there before graduating to Vasbyt, Boulders and the Downhill tracks.
  4. Fully agree. Bought some really good stuff from them over the past year or two.
  5. A theory I read was that the RD is more visible, so guys like to have the higher spec there cos they can brag they've got an XT / XTR setup, meanwhile everything else is Deore / SLX. Article basically said the same thing you guys have said above, for better shifting spend money on (in this order): 1. Shifters 2. FD 3. RD
  6. While I agree with your sentiment, my experience with buying onlne has been that the customs for clothing is crazy (>50% if I'm not mistaken). This would certainly go a long way to explaining the inflated prices of imported clothing. The bigger question is why locally manufactured clothing is so expensive.
  7. There is a video on You tube about this. I've done it with the entry level Shimanos and it was fairly easy. If u google "service shimano pedals" u should find the clip.
  8. I forgot about the river crossing. Might get downright dangerous if the rain forecast materialises.
  9. Weather forecast not looking good for Saturday folks. Weather warning due to expected storms. Gale force winds, heavy rain and max temp of 13. Great day for MTB
  10. I am colourblind, but the shiny bits still grab my attention . I also got caught out by CB, one nasty fall later had me binning the pedals ASAP.
  11. Thanks. I'll be the guy in baggies on the Scott Scale 26" HT. Trying to keep up with the rest of the competitors . While trying not to do any spectacular face plants on drop offs. Lets hope we have a few dry days, cos that course will be treacherous in the wet.
  12. I've entered Sports category just for a laugh. 2 laps of awesome technical riding . Most of the very technical sections have chicken runs btw, but even with these its still fairly technical. If you've raced before I reckon you should be OK, unless they've changed the course since I was there earlier this year.
  13. Having recently switched from an entry level alu mtb frame to a mid / top end carbon mtb frame, I can categorically say this is horse manure. Every aspect of my cycling has improved, climbing, flats on the road, descending, technical riding,etc... Not to mention the smile on my face when I'm riding . My first ride out I was overtaking guys in climbs where I was always the "overtakee".
  14. Just couldn't bring myself to look at my bike for the last two days. My way of grieving for the loss of a great man, true legend. Will go for long ride in Tokai tomorrow afternoon, with black armband... Will try and attack the climbs a bit more, in memory of the legend. Somehow I feel I need to break myself on the mountain tomorrow, to complete the grieving process.
  15. The brightest star on the SA sport scene, snuffed out before achieving all that his talent deserved.... He was already great, and was only getting stronger, and going on to achieve even greater things. Truly, truly breaks my heart... Our thoughts are with his young wife and family...
  16. Rode up there yesterday. Looks like only a short section of jeep track is closed. Access to most routes still OK. Mast and Silvermine definitely both still accessible.
  17. Coming down from Silvermine this morning, really looking forward to these sections of singletrack, only to find them closed. Spoilt my whole ride . Good thing I managed to get some time on them yesterday .
  18. I've got the Ryder version of the ESI, and its definitely a bit inferior to the original. ESI's are much softer and mould to your hand a bit better. Tried the ESI's on a friend's bike. But I guess u pay for the superior product.
  19. I must say I don't mind bi-directional trails, especially cross country types like Faerie Glen. The concern is about the walkers, who have no idea about mtb rules. No matter what rules are applied, they won't be effective as long as people are walking on the single tracks. I agree with Omega Man, rules need to apply at all times, changing the rules during " peak" times is just going to create confusion.
  20. Having grown up walking in CT for most of my life, I know there are miles and miles of trails out there for walkers to use. Surely a few km's of exclusive mtb trails is not too much to ask. And I suspect it will get worse over the Festive Season, with visitors coming in and not knowing the "protocol" at Tokai . Hence the need for signage, as visitors have no clue that some trails are mtb trails.
  21. Difficult to go round them on certain sections. Its called SINGLE track for a reason.
  22. Signage on the trail definitely the answer. Or at least part of the answer. A warning sign at the gate is probably worthwhile as well.
  23. Coming down Fairy Glen on Saturday afternoon, and I run (almost literally) into two separate groups of walkers on the single track. Luckily I wasn't going too fast or somebody could have gotten quite seriously injured. Then they have the audacity to ask me why I don't have a bell on my bike. I don't mind the odd walker on the jeep track, but on the single track it's quite dangerous. Is there any way we can keep walkers off the single track? My understanding is that the singletrack in that section is meant for biking, or is it a shared path?
  24. My first bike was a Silverback. Gave me a good five years, and I still keep it as my back up bike. Really good value for money. I've since moved on to a Scott Scale, which is totally awesome. IMHO, I reckon if you spending more than R10k look at the Scott range, less than that you probably better off with the Silverback range. When I bought the Scott I was seriously considering the Silverback Spectra, but then I got a surprise boost to the the budget .
  25. Picked up my Scott Scale RC from the shop yesterday. Frame bought here on the hub for a song, built up with bits and pieces until I get cash to fit her out properly. Can't wait to get her up to Tokai.
