  1. Check out the Caminade website for some steel goodness: Website A few photos of the one4all model, you can run this frame as a 160mm 26" or a 135mm 650b:
  2. ATS motorsport supplied the AISI 4130 tubing I used to build a Sasol Mini-Baja frame for my final year project 7 years ago. The tubing they could supply back then will not be suitable for bicycle frame building. The wall thicknesses they can supply are far too thick. During my literature study I made a chart and if I recall correctly the lightest tube they could supply was still over 750g per meter. The tubing they can supply is more focussed towards race car frames and rally car roll cages. AISI4130 generally does not require heat treatment after normal MIG welding. Not for roll cages and and car frames at least. From one of Engineering Materials books: I also think that butted tubes will be required for a bike frame. This will keep weight lower while improving the weldability of the ends. Butted tubes need to be ordered in specific lengths, which means either special orders or order form a bicycle specific tube supplier. I am definitely subscribed to this thread.
  3. Another aspect that influence braking is your body position. The lower you can have your COG the harder you can pull your front brake. This is where a dropper post will come in handy, as it will allow you to lower your torso further than with an XC height seatpost. The low COG will decrease the MOI of the system (you and your bike) around the front axle which which allows you to brake much harder. Since MOI is a function of distance squared, a small reduction of distance between the COG and the rotating axis can have a significant effect. In this case the axis is the front axle. Your body is the biggest contributor to the mass of the system which also means that your body position has a significant influence on the position of the COG of the system. MOI ---> Moment of Inertia COG---> Centre of Gravity
  4. Well if a rider tracks his workout with a gps it is his responsibility to bring a laptop along and upload the workout to Strava. We will definitely ensure better cellular reception at the next one. I have camped a Hayterdale many times before, and always got just enough reception to upload workouts to Endomondo, but I suspect the number of people uploading at the same time made a difference.
  5. We'll have to decide on a time and a venue. We can use Hayterdale again, but I think it is time for some proper spadework in Longmore Forest. I have two runs of about 2km in length in mind. Both runs have 200-250m descent. It is just a matter of obtaining approval and raking some pine needles and shaping a few berms. There will be 2 stages, with 1 x practice run and 2 x race runs on each stage. So you will do 3 laps on race day. Next one will be Strava only, and we'll get a cellular reception booster/antenna for Strava uploads. Think it is time for a dedicated Enduro committee to be formed.
  6. Are you guys going to ride Champery? It looks easy
  7. Bike type added to the results of Stage 1 & 2. Results with Bike-Type.pdf
  8. I will have to do it from memory, I will see what I can do.
  9. If you ever come to this side of the world, you really need to ride at Hayterdale Trails, the trails there are awesome. It is very rugged and natural which gives it a very unique character. They have hosted one leg of the National XCO and DHI series, and last year they hosted the SA Champs XCO and DHI. Check out their facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hayterdale/308144009311507?fref=ts Special Stage 1 Video: Special Stage 4 Video:
  10. The rabbit hole, 2m gap jump followed by 270deg berm which sends you through the gap you just jumped over:
  11. Riders making their way up the scenic Zuurberg Pass: At the top of Special Stage 1:
  12. Results are out - Click HERE
  13. Not anymore! He is on team Fedgroup Itec now!
  14. Definitely not lactose intolerant: And keeping a watchful eye over the Enduro riders at the start of Special Stage 1 at the Scott Ayton Enduro:
  15. Are you perhaps thinking of the incident at Baberton Ultra XCM in 2009 where Brandon pushed Kevin off his bike?
  16. Aluminium needs heat treatment after welding, unless I don't remember that well from my varsity days. Would you have access to such heat treatment facilities? Have you considered a TIG welded steel frame? Caminade makes a full suspension steel frame, it took a few top 10 spots on the Enduro World Series: http://enduro-mtb.co...-one4all-bikes/
  17. Nice, did you use SolidWorks for the 3D design?
  18. Strava Results for: Special Stage 1: http://www.strava.co...?filter=overall Special Stage 2: http://www.strava.co...?filter=overall Special Stage 3: http://www.strava.co...?filter=overall Special Stage 4: http://www.strava.co...?filter=overall I will add the manual timing results of stage 1 and 2 this evening. The prize giving was based on the combined manual times of Special Stages 1 & 2. We had special Strava prizes in order to get as many people as possible to use it.
  19. Thanks to everyone who came to race. Your smiles at the bottom of Special Stage 1 made my day. I will try to post results by tomorrow evening.
  20. Apparently it is due to a dispute between the landowner and the trail manager. Must be the same reason why FNB removed their sponsorship from the Amazing Race Series. What the dispute is about, I have no idea. It would be nice if both parties could release official statements as to why the trail is closed, and what the dispute is about. See a quote from Hopewell Trails facebook page here, about a month or so ago:
  21. If it is raining cats and dogs, or snowing it might take you two hours to get up the pass by car, but last time I went up there I was at the pub 50 minutes after leaving Himeville, which included the stops at both border posts and two stops for photos along the way. You might take long if you get stuck behind the touring groups though.
