  1. Well done Grebs!

I personally don't think you should change how the voting is, other than to just verify that there aren't any fake accounts created solely for the purposes of winning. As far as what I see it, the sole purpose of this competition is to promote The Hub and GoPro, and the more people you can get involved the better. So going in the direction of a panel for voting will defeat the purpose.

Like all things in life, it doesn't count to just have talent, you need to work to get to the top. And those people that work to get to the top, end up getting there. You can take any competition that is running on any social media and the person that's the most popular wins, whether it being that they just have that many friends, or if they go out and promote themselves and trying to win.

Maybe the way forward is to have the photos submitted anonymously, and the ID of the poster only revealed after voting has closed?

  2. Lock the bike up outside by one of the many poles, changing area is clean and so are the showers, although there is only two and only one with a door, haha - get what you pay for!

FYI I used to swim there often, there used to be lady who brought her bike with her into the pool hall.

Also interesting is the consideration of gait, Haile Gebrselassie is a severe overpronator, and in the photo it looks like a disproportionately high number of late stage supinators are represented among the elites; Less than 3% of runners are supposed to be supinators, but atleast 8 of the 28 shown look like they are.

All the while the golden standard has always been: perfect = midfoot & neutral...

  4. My beef is with the mass hysteria and the premise that they have suddenly found an answer that nobody else could (and the consumers that believe that anybody that questions the marketing is behind the times). If it works for you then you are not a sucker. It didnt work for many though.

The most amusing thing about all this is that that mass hysteria wasn't generated by Vibram, but by the runners themselves, Vibrams were aqua booties and yoga shoes and the like, when some runners started wearing and marketing them, and only then did vibram come out with its first bona fide running shoe

The legal team totally dropped the ball here, burden of proof was on the claimant, but they don't just have to prove that the runner is injured they have to prove that they are injured as a direct result of running in FFs, so if a large enough percentage of the runners were found to have had biomechanical imbalances or poor mechanics that on their own in any shoes at the same mileage and intensity would have caused injury they could have had the suit dismissed.

Anyway, I will be keeping a keen eye out for stock clearing sales, I need a new pair of kicks for cross country.

  5. Interesting article that I've spotted where Vibram, the company that brought us the 'barefoot shoe' was recently at the receiving end of a class action lawsuit in the US of A...bottom line, their claims relating to the benefits of their particular shoes could not be achieved and now they are paying for it!

Reminds me of the 'powerbalance' bracelets... :whistling:

    Here's the link...http://goo.gl/H7GJE1

This is different than Powerbalance, which was gimmick through and through.

This is more akin to fat people suing diet soda manufacturers... The type of people drawn to go all in for minimalist footwear were the types of people who had been plagued by injuries and had most likely been advised by numerous bios/physios/sports medicine professionals to do various strengthening exercises, which they did exactly 4 times and then when the injury hadn't cleared up looked for their next quick fix.

With the advent of minimalism the group of runners who stood to gain the most from the buffering effect of the cushioning in their shoes, were the same group of runners who dove headlong into foot wear most seasoned uninjured runners were loathe to wear for more than 3km at a time more than once a week - and what is more is this group of runners was now running through niggles with this thought running through their heads "ignore it, you are running in minimalist shoes, you CANT get injured"

I think VFFs legal team are clearly no good.

This is just further evidence of the fact that the world has become a very safe place for very stupid people.

  6. What is the qualifying time for D?

Does 2minutes REALLY affect their race?

I am not saying it doesn't, but my thinking is that it may be time that shows you have done a race in the past year so you don't start right at the back but at the same time, 2 minutes doesn't really matter to your overall time?

    http://www.twooceans.../events/seeding

    http://www.twooceans...s/ultra-seeding

Doesnt really affect it, should actually cater for it when setting a goal.

I don't think the 2 min itself really affects your time, but being that far down the field the 2 plus minutes is just a premonition of what is to come with the field slowing to a walk through all the bends and road narrowings early in the race, I dropped back and started with friends in D last year, NEVER EVER EVER again! The difference between C and D is immense and costs much more than just the initial 2-3 min.

  7. A friend started from near the back of D her gun to start mat delay was 2:30, my sister started from somewhere in E her delay was 1:12, I started from the front of C my delay was 00:22, so it seems that unless you are in C or higher, rather drop back and start from E (but get there early)... Ultimately that means that to achieve the desired purpose, they should start A, B & C in one wave, and then D and E in another, so that D still get the perk of having taken the effort to seed. At the moment they are the biggest losers in the whole thing.

  8. The docter has the responsibility to tell the patient what he feels he does not know/need to know

this is part and parcel to the process of the medical consultation--- if this did not happen the consultation has not been concluded and the patient needs to do 3 things

1 - ask his money back (CPSA)

    2 - get a second opinion

3 - report this DR to the HPCSA

    Please note:

The patient (moron?) has the responsibility to ask the docter what he feels he doesnt understand (which has been explained)

This has sooooooo much potential to turn into the Mobius strip of discussions  but sadly I must away... have a good long weekend!

  9. I completely agree that docters are not right all the time/gods/sent from heaven or whatever...

But it seems that the general public are quick to look down on docters...

Most of us love what we do and try our best to do it well...

(note: I have on a few occasions reported my own colleagues when I believed they practiced irresponsibly)

I'm not saying doctors are the problem, far from it, but sometimes that they treat medicine with a rather cavalier outlook of someone who assumes that everyone knows what they know, and therefore need not be continually warned of the pitfalls.

  10. Again.... let me break it down for you.

Docter study... docter study hard... docter study how to prescibe medication (and try not to kill people in the process)

(disclaimer: all the docters out there didn't study as hard as they should have, the guys doing the research though kinda know what they are doing)

I appreciate that, but while doctors study, and doctors study hard - moron who take medicine see medicine working, but would like medicine to work faster, moron take two - cause moron not care how long doctor study to write how many miligrams on prescription.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Douglas Adams in Mostly Harmless (1992).

  11. No debate. I'm right, he's wrong

    No you are wrong  he's a she ^_^

Anyway on the point of Orlistat, I am not a doctor, quick google search, but then again a quick google search can tell you how BAD apples, or vitamin B or water can be for you...

I just find it hugely irresponsible for a doctor to be advocating for a weight loss pill and calling it "actually quite safe"; and the fact that it operates by inhibiting the uptake of fats in the intestines, why am I the only person thinking "that's BAD!"? Nerves, fat soluble vitamins, healthy skin and hair...

  12. So... the actual only pill that can make you lose weight is Orlistat

All these other drugs are stimulants/appetite suppressors...

Orlistat actual prevents the absorption of fats from your bowel... And it is actually quite safe

Only downside: Fecal incontinence (which really sucks) and permanent floaters (youll become an expert on packing the TP over them boats - they are not being flushed) !!!

No sports person I have ever met actually NEEDS their liver or kidneys... I know you are a doctor, but seriously???

  13. Hey Guys,

Did anyones kids do the fun run last year? Not sure what time to get there before the start of the race (i.e. parking, etc)

Aim to be on the field ready 20min before start, parking a little crazy with the trail runs and the fun runs, depending on where you find parking there is the time to walk from car to field to consider too... so if you are driving up to campus an hour before you should be comfortable timewise.

  14. why is there a tender, doesn't the council just buy green paint the next time they're at the shop they buy the white, yellow and red paint from?

Don't tell me the painting of road lines is outsourced?

MUCH better to send ou-Frik out to the "hardware store" where he successfully manages to buy a tin of R200 paint for R 5000, he then hires his comrades for 9 x market related wages and the project runs out of funding before 10m^2 have been painted  ...

Sure the tender process takes longer, but it saves you tax-bucks in the long run. It also grows local economies, which in turn is good for the City, and by proxy, your business. Projects with estimated total cost of under R 200 000 do not go out on tender.

  15. Another question I forgot to ask is wrt hydration. When I cycle I usually use 32gi regularly. Shall I just fill up on 32gi 30min before the race(&hope not to pee :whistling: ) and grab water at the watering holes?

Use the 32Gi chews and drink water on the route... this is what I do and I'm also big on 32Gi, not had any issues.

  16. 15 minutes is a bit extreme...

I ran sub 90 last year and won't go anywhere close to 15 minutes faster on a flat course.

The 15 min aplies to running oceans21 unfit, I run a comfortable 1:50 half when reasonably fit, and have run two unfit oceans21s came in at 2:06 and 2:09...

  17. Hi Hubbers

I have this assignment and we have to design a space for anyone of my choosing and I chose Jens Voigt as my client and funny enough, I made contact with him and he is more than willing to participate in this assignment! ( dream has come true  ) so anyhow, from a cyclists view, what would you say would be the perfect bedroom for a cyclist? name some issues you find and let me know and ill find solutions. one of my problems are smelly clothes! if you could help out that would be great and ill post the final render in 3 weeks.

    thanks for the help :)

    A laundry chute :)
