  1. Great review and just in time as I am in the market to buy a pair of these. My MacAskill Five Tens have been so good to me and I am hoping these will do the same and more
  2. Tried that... It's far too bulky to carry (chest rig, thigh holster... the marker itself is simply huge) so pepper spray or nothing at all. If the situation allows (I am daydreaming btw) keep your bike between you and your assailant, and treat it as both a sword and shield.
  3. Just got back from a cape point loop with my buddy... all I can say is our mouths are dry with a wierd lingering dryness and aftertaste, lungs feel dry and there is smoke everywhere. Our beautiful mountains are burning but hopefully the rain doesn't wash the soil away, would like to ride the planned route.
  4. I believe so, and I very much appreciate having it too! The disc conversion finally becomes a reality.
  5. Thought you might have liked it
  6. Got my fork a week ago from an awesome hubber and picked up my calipers at the LBS today. Let the conversions begin!

  8. I've already started my road disc build (started in Jan, getting all the bits together), almost there in fact all I need is to find a set of appropriate wheels which are proving very hard to find...
  9. I want to cycle early mornings before work but I don't because of things like this happening in the area... Anyone keen to make an informal group?
  10. For the connection to the seatpost, I made a plastic/nylon fitting and tapped thread onto it the same as the bottom one. If anyone is keen I can post a short how-to on this ghetto mod. It's super fun. Thought the ghetto would get flamed thoroughly though hence I haven't done one as of yet.
  11. I adjust on the fly as they say so while riding, just slow down on the pedalling for a short moment, release the clamp, drop, clamp on and pedal again. Same for the way up, but that sounds and feels the best. There was a youtube video of a guy doing that and after seeing it, I tried it out immediately and then all of this happens. Will post a video next week when I get the gopro again.
  12. Sure thing, will get le go pro running for some on the fly seatpost adjustment footage That gas strut is almost too strong, so unless the seat post/tube is greased properly like it should be a.k.a not dry, it won't drop - it drops butter smoothly right now though. It also pushes my weight up with much ease and makes that signature tsssh sound like when you open the hatch on a bakkie etc. and pushes it in a straight line too, so no saddle re-alignment necessary unless you bump it hard. Thanks guys, loving the ghetto-ness.
  13. Here's my S-Works Tricross. Just had a quick hose down after many recent rainy rides.
  14. Ghetto dropper post... Got a gas-lift in my seat tube Now I can drop le seat and when I need it up again it sets to the correct height - all for grand total of R182.50
  15. I ran Shimano Deore/SLX on my MTB and Shimano 105 on my first road bike. Upgraded the MTB to new Sram X9 (and Avid brakes...) and Sram Rival on the new road bike and Rival/Force on the cyclocross bike. Why? Just the upgrade bug, but I personally prefer the looks of my Sram stuff. Carbon everywhere. I would run the X7/X9 that you have (switch the X7 stuff out for X9). Groupsets are costly so as said before a wheels/other components upgrade would be good. At the end of the day, we all just want to go out and ride our bikes right?
  16. I've used them, they were pretty amazing in my opinion especially when the big boss sorts everything out.

    Trucape MTB 50km

I would have loved to finish this race but got misdirected by 3 marshals and chain snapped twice. At least I know my ghetto dropper post works like a charm.
  18. Repair job looks awesome! I need to find someone in CT to weld some IS tabs onto an aluminum frame for me. Hopefully I can find someone who works neatly like this. Hope this bike sees many more fast and happy rides.
  19. You sir, have just ruined my day (kidding). That bike looks amazing!!! Congratulations Now I feel the need to build ANOTHER cyclocross bike for the sake of having discs.
  20. I definitely want to give it ago! Just for fun, and more fun. (cyclocross build is almost complete)
  21. I am guilty in that my bikes are not insured. By all rights I should at least insure my pride and joy, as that is the one I have most concern for as I wouldn't be able to replace it in a hurry, while I have a bit less concern about my winter bike and mountain bike (don't get me wrong, I would be wrecked if anything happened to any one of my bikes). I just have the idea and gut wrenching feeling that insurance is too expensive, and I would rather put those funds along the the rest of whatever doesn't get spent on the bikes into a savings account (I am new to the world things and responsibilities like insurance and medical aid) and if the day comes that those funds are needed they will be there, and if I don't need them well then... new parts and kit! To be honest, I have never looked into bike insurance even though I have always wanted to insure my bikes for theft at least. I have spoken to guys in my favourite LBS's and they all advise, insure everything. I guess the next step is to just be proactive about it and do it. It still feels to me like I'm throwing cash down the drain though, that's not the logic, just the feeling. However, R45-R100/month insurance would be awesome.
  22. I'm be along Simonstown just about every weekend between 6:00-6:30am, usually meeting riders at Jubilee's square or the 7 eleven if we can add that spot.

    Argus 2014

Some L's got ahead of themselves and jumped the start a minute early or so. The announcer got distracted and started counting down group M's start without releasing the L's first, so group L got released at 6:53 instead of 6:47. The J's and K's were on time so that was likely the start of the delays.

    Argus 2014

I nearly got caught in that L group accident, have never braked so hard before in my life. One moment gunning along to keep the average speed up, the next moment bodies rolling on the floor and bikes flipping in the air. I was so scared that I was going to ride over the guy on the tandem that crashed infront of me, they were literally sliding and tumbling on the road while I had my back wheel locked out and bike sideways, only just managed to stop in time and unclipped standing on top of the bikes scattered infront of me. Thanks to the riders behind me for stopping in time as well. To be honest I didn't pay much attention to the casualties, first thing I did was looked at another person's back for the emergency number and called for an ambulance, then started pulling bikes out of the road. This was also the first time I had seen so much blood before in my life, a ladies face had a good amount of skin taken off, the rest was all a blur of bodies in the chaos. Waved frantically to slow down the next group coming along at a speed. Hope all those involved recover swiftly, and get back on their bikes after recovery without discouragement. On a lighter note, I managed a 3:31 for my 2nd Argus ever! I have been cycling for 2 months over a year, and intend to break that 3 hour wall next year.
