  1. Sounds like you just described me! I am useless though at high speed on the flats so won't finish a race if I do too much work, but on hills I will often cycle straight off the front of a bunch (and I'm not exactly talking about the elite group here!)... I actually enjoy doing work and if I'm feeling good I will do my share of the pulling without any hesitation, but I also plan it to make sure I get to the finish with the front of my bunch. And I can't wait for that climb after last weeks flatness! Struggled to hang on to my bunch in Stellies, but in the Cobra and Rollercoaster I had no problem at all.
  2. Definitely agree... wheels, go normal mail, courier is about 5 times the amount. Speed services bag = R51.48, good service. Generally normal mail is the way to go though, never had a problem and generally pretty reliable time wise (about 5 working days).
  3. I have the Thule ride on... very easy to use, but I don't feel very comfortable in the security of my bike on it for long trips. Would prefer something that locks on to the bike more securely (might have been fixed in more recent models, mine is 3 years old and the bikes fasten on with straps which come loose on longer trips). I haven't had any problems in 3 years, just don't feel comfortable about my bikes. The roof racks are awesome unless you park your car in a garage. You are guaranteed to forget at some point (in my case, twice!). They are very secure (until you hear the crunching sound). The rack bent until it broke in half and the bike went through the back window of the car, but it was still solidly attached to the remaining pieces of the rack! I know this doesn't help much, but hopefully gives you things to think of... If the thule has a secure way of attaching your bike to it now then I would definitely recommend that! I also much prefer tow bar mounted carriers, they just feel more secure...
  4. From the other side of the story... the short and medium route riders pay the same entry we all do, but then they do things like on Sunday and make them start at 8.40 just to convenience us long route riders. My g/f paid R150 to ride before finding out the start time had been delayed, she ended up doing the 20km route (R7,50 per km!) because she would have ended up starting closer to 09.30 with the temp numbers and couldn't spend the whole of sunday stuck in stellies at the ride. That is absolutely ridiculous, if they are going to be set aside for the long route then they must pay less, they do not get the same for their money that we do as the rules are structured by the long route riders (these are also the ppl who take it seriously and fight for new rules as in this post). We should be supporting the beginner, true 'fun-riders' as well as the serious racers. It takes all types of cyclists to support the sport, not only those who race seriously.
  5. I've only had great experiences so far (sold more than I've bought, but done plenty of both!). Hubbers do tend to be bargain hunters and generally won't pay a 'fair' price (and also often ask questions when they have no intention of buying anything for some odd reason), but I'll take slightly less from a sale for the sake of dealing with a friendly person... I've posted things all around the country (had to learn how to use the post office after I joined the hub!) and received my fair share from around the country... as I said, only dealt with great ppl and really happy with the way all transactions have gone. This has also lead to my new little business (importing the Edge components) which hopefully when I have some time for it will be a decent source of income.
  6. If you need it in 2 weeks then pay extra for faster postage... Parcel force is anywhere from 4 days to 5 weeks from my experience (everyone blames customs, but it's actually parcel force. The 2 orders that have been delayed were both still sitting in their containers and they hadn't gotten to it yet - customs generally clear stuff in less than a day).
  7. From CRC, I can almost guarantee it will arrive (unless customs decides they like your stuff too much to give it to you!). There are countless stories of the incredible customer service CRC offers (I have experienced it twice myself). On the other hand, their competition (total cycling) has the most shocking customer service I have ever come across. Took them 2 months to replace a derailleur which arrived in CT with the hanger bent (that's 2 months from when it was returned to them!).
  8. Is that not a bit scary that they say wait until they bulge then replace them? What happens if someone does a 100km+ race on them and doesn't realise what's going on with their back tyre? If I owned them I would be terrified of putting them on my bike...
  9. So 10cm is a big enough gap for you? 3 witnesses plus what could be construed as a confession from "Mr X" (do we seriously have to call him this?) is insufficient? Whether you like it or not, the facts seem to indicate that he did indeed endanger these cyclists lives intentionally. I don't see why they shouldn't discard the letter. It is now public knowledge that he has been formally warned so you can cut it up and burn it, it makes no difference. Do you genuinely feel it is incorrect to say to someone (in a civilized manner) that if they injure or kill a person, criminal charges will be laid against them? Surely the simplest solution is that he should just be careful when driving and thus not injure or kill anyone - shouldn't we all?
  10. I trust you're being as sarcastic as I was! I think it would be great if they put in speed bumpers every 50 metres (to protect the residents children of course!). Maybe the one looking for donations should put some of the money towards it - it's a very good safety initiative which would reduce what his group spends on medical supplies!
  11. CR, I think you need to find a forum for angry schoolkids who don't want other children in their playground and go and rant there... if you don't have anything constructive to add (which you really don't!), then a cycling forum is not the place for you (only cyclists are permitted to rant here!). You don't need to defend anyone in the cradle 'coz they've done nothing wrong - once you've invested in your little cottage, you are entitled to mow down anyone who trespasses on 'your' road (it's only fair!). You know what, if I come across schoold kids crossing a pedestrian crossing where I live, maybe I should speed up and see how many I can take out 'coz it's just ridiculous to hold me up for an extra 23 seconds! I can see how busy you are trying to keep tabs on every post on the hub (you haven't missed one about the cradle yet!) so can just imagine how little free time you have while driving! Must be a tough life being that busy... On a slightly more related note, if you want to post something, stick to the topic... is dangerous dave or whatever his name is correct in the way he dealt with this situation or not (and try and answer without the words "3 abreast", I think you've killed those by now!)? A simple answer that addresses the question and not what happened to you and cattle-prod ken and co. 3 months ago will suffice... And anyways, why are you on here at all when you should be outside defending your territory - think how many of those awful, criminal cyclists you might have been able to hoot at and mow down while you've been reading this stupid post! (Maybe some more photo's of red-faced old men while you berate them for their sin of only using 2 wheels will add some humour to this post?)shaun2312010-01-15 08:01:32
  12. Ok, now I am starting to understand where the sticky out bits came into this picture ... the cups aren't in the frame yet, but that part sounds easy now (really don't want to damage anything here!). Where does the grease come into all of this now and is normal ol' grease suitable or do you need fancy expensive bicycle grease?
  13. the two sticky-out bits must point down' date=' the single sticky-out bit must go through the hole in the frame that's at the front. [/quote'] Love the explanation... will have a look at it when I get home and see if I can find all the "sticky-out bits"!
  14. Anyone with some insight into fitting a headset to my frame?
  15. While we're on the topic... Can someone give me some advice on whether there is anything special to know about fitting a headset to a carbon frame (it's a MTB if that makes a difference!)
  16. I am very tempted to do it myself, it just means investing in a torque wrench which is worth a few complete builds itself! But as I need to do 2 bikes now and the one will probably be rebuilt again in a little more than a month (SRAM X0 and SID Team hopefully by then!) so the R750+ should hopefully cover it... Does anyone know of a bike maintenance workshop or something similar where I could get some training in cape town or is it really simple enough to just get stuck in? (obviously not talking about wheel building and things like that here, just assembling bikes and basic maintenance). Unfortunately I don't have a "cheap" bike to practise on so really don't want to damage anything, but would like to be able to do it myself. <Sorry for the hijack, but hopefully this helps you out too!>
  17. Ask first about costs, wish I knew someone who would do it for R250! Last time I had a bike built, labour was R550 and then they still had a list of parts they had used and hadn't mentioned to me so cost me closer to R800. The time before that at a different shop was R350 and with parts ended up costing about R600... If someone knows a shop in CT that will do it for R250, please let me know, I have 2 new carbon frames waiting to be built up!
  18. Is prevention not better than cure... I.e can you not criminal charges against him now? He has blatantly admitted that he endangered your lives intentionally with no regard for whether he causes harm or not. I am not a legal expert, but is this not sufficient to lay charges? At least this might give him and his buddies a fright. I don't think saying he will be charged once he knocks someone over is a good approach as this means, as long as he misses ppl by 10cm's, he is safe and you will only do something after someone has been seriously injured or worse thanks to him. Judging by the responses on here, I am sure you will find many ppl who would contribute both time and money to assist in dealing with the matter. Just my 2 cents... As mentioned previously, well done on actually doing something about it though, too many ppl will share a few choice words with the driver, post it on the hub and then leave it at that.
  19. I have an SDG I-fly saddle on my HT (approx. 145g), it hurt like hell on the first 2 rides I did. Couldn't sit after an hour... after that I got used to it (or numb as someone else mentioned) and now I absolutely love it. If you don't ride regularly, you will struggle with the hard saddles, but with a bit of time on one you will find they are (generally) actually more comfy than the soft padded ones.
  20. My parcel force delivery sent on the 21st arrived at my door last wednesday so now it's time for this one to get a move on!
  21. Our parcel force order has been on "left origin country" since Monday, maybe they're using camels to save costs now?
