  1. So he's going to be riding his Silverback for a while yet?
  2. Trubie and Andy are Trekkers. I ride a retro Petini. Owl rides a retro Eddie Mercx (red one) sometimes. Most time he just confuses us because you never know what he wil show up on. Kid has a white Slverback. Nance rides a red Scott and Oxman rides a black scott.
  3. Let's see, there is a whole bunch of cyclists that leave from Xumbugs at 07h00 on Sat and Sunday mornings. Then there are a couple of loonies that cycle form the same place and even frequent the hub. Trubie, Indigo Kid, Greyowl (version 2 point OH), ShawnA, and Wonder woman, Tyx1 and many others. Andy, Fortunately for Kieran, he is well within the undisclosed prescribed minum radius and so has permanent residence staus thus not required to have a visa. Visas are only required by people outside of the undisclosed radius since we need to hire body guards to protect us from you northern riff raff. Non refundable of course and renewable until honorary residence status has been established. You and Ox now qualify for this (I think. Just check in with Kid first.) Nancy Drew also has lifetime "souf status" and welcome anytime. Sometimes we arrange "special rides" which do not include the usual suspects from Xumbugs and this is by invitation only. Andy seems to think that the SBR is the only place to ride so frequently suggests SBR rides. At east one a weekend. (kid. psst, maybe we are not sqeezing hard enough, the boy still has money to come and ride the reserve too often. Maybe we need to up his fees.) Seriously, the big ASGR thread started out much like yours and is now frequently visited by our some of our northern friends. Agteros, Nance Drew and a few others. Check it out for some out of the ordinary southern rides. otherwise just get yourself and bike to Xumbugs every Saturday and Sunday. We do need to meet you though, just so we know you are not some spy or some junk. We'll look out for you on the other thread.
  4. I find that motorists in general, will give you a break if they know your intentions. Since we lack indicators, stop lights and other stuff required to make a vehicle road worthy, we have to signal our intentions in other ways. I use hand signals when I want to change lanes, direction and always (well at least when possible) thank the driver with a very clear thumbs up "thank you". A little bit of politeness goes a long way. By showing our intentions, motorists at least know what our intentions are and can work around that. This helps enormously. Not sure about the rest of you but my mind reading skill sucks. I like to be prepared while I am driving. To know what to do if something goes wrong. It has saved me frommay accidents in the past. Sharing information helps other road users prepare for your next move. Good to hear of stuff ike this.
  5. believe me' date=' these folk owe me beeeeeg time yeah, it was...popped in here on my way home and they told me it arrived this morning. aaaaaah, don't feel green, i'll post a pic of me wearing it if you want Holy, you mean you will have a picture taken of you wearing kit????? WTF? Not too many pics of Holy with clothes on are there? Will that be in or out of the mud bath this time?
  6. I would love to agree with you amateur, but I also saw a number of bottles (Water bottles) discarded in the reserve on Sunday. Most races I have done I have seenmany bottles thrown away, so I have reservations that your idea will work. Whasp have a smart marketing idea in that they will give you a discount if you give them the empty wrappers back. (AT least they did this at one time.) People in general are just lazy and have a huge attitide problem. Littering is an attitude adjustment. We need to become more environmentally friendly, but at the rate that we pour carbon monoxide andother greenhouse gasses into the atmospher, and at the rate we are clearing out the equatorial forrests, I doubt if we will be having this type of debate in another 30 to 50 years. Man will have suceeded in turning hisplanet into a barren wasteland and we will probably no longer be around. Damn, are we smart or what?
  7. FOFLMFAO. Dude, I learned that one from you. I recall you giving me a blow by blow on where to be careful on the decents and how hard the next climb was going to be. OK, so will be riding with Greyowl a bit later. Will chat to him about doing a lido loop on Saturday. Will E-mail you with the details.
  8. Sounds good to me mate. Planning to do a ride with Trubie in SBR on Sunday. Why not join us and we can do it then.
  9. 1Hill, I agree. No way cyclists ride with glass bottles so that was definitley not one of "us". I just cannot fathom the logic (or lack thereof) of people having this need to throw bottles onto the road and break them. It is the same as not putting a gel wrapper back into your pocket for later disposal. Except that glass is just so much more destuctive. Neither are degradable andleft alone, will still be an eyesore in 100 years time. (If the world is still around then.) Glass cuts tyres and hurts animals, can cause fires and is not easy to clean up. Generally speaking of course, a lot of people lack common decency today. Can they not understand that this is a nature reserve? It is pretty much getting to be a problem in many of the National parks.
  10. Mux, I know and respect that both yourself and Delgado have put in a lot of effort ot try and keep this place open for some who do not deserve it. I'd like to attend this metting and put forward some suggestions. Perhaps, if this is not possible, you would like to hear those suggestions. It will be such a great pity to lose out on what is an ideal place to train and ride. I am with you 100% on how you feel about being let down by many. There may be some alternatives.
  11. I know there are a number of threads about this issue of being banned from the end of the year. I was one of the loons who did the Race for Victory yesterday. Great race, apalling wind. One of the things that comes to mind is that there was a written instruction on the race handout forbidding anyone from dropping anything in the reserve. They had road closure there for us too, so we had exxclusive use of the SBNR. Thing that really got to me was the number of goo and gel wrappers I saw on the road. Really, there must have been one every 15 to 20 m. I never saw anyone dropping one but to be sure, many were discarded. The banana peels, I can still forgive since they are bio degradable. This is probably one of the reasons we are being banned for SBRNR. Like is it so difficult for us to have somemodicum of respect for it being a nature reserve and not throwing our goo wrappers around the place. If I was SBR management, I would have them all picked up and printed. Impose a heavy fine on the scrotum pimples who dropped them. **Rant off** Mux, Maybe you want to suggest this to SBR management in the hope that some may be given the privilage of using this awesome training place.
  12. This is a big problem in a lot of things. The attitudes of so many is wrong. On another forum I am a member of, poor behaviour is very problematic and trying to correct the behaviour causes many problems. Just another symptom of a society almost terminally ill. This "I can do anything I smaak" attitude. It sucks and creates huge frustration. No wonder motorists often want to run us over.
  13. Holy, yes, I agree with you. It was very magnanamous of Bernadines mother to be so forgiving. What we also need to remember was that the act appeared to be deliberate according to memory of eye witness accounts. It is very sad that the dependants of the taxi driver will suffer the loss of his income, but he should have considered the consequences of hs actionsand perhaps we would not be having this debate. I still think he should have got more, but glad that at least the sentence is moderately harsh. At least justice is seen to be done here. I cannot help but wonder when he will be eligibale for parole or if his sentence will be abandoned at the presidents next birthday or if he will be given some presidential pardon next time the president is feeling good about something. There should be a standard set out and all justices shouls abide by them. Subjectivity can lead to all sorts of misinterpretations.
  14. I think 12 years is too light a sentence. He is guilty of murder and feel he should have got life without the pssibility of parole. Just my opinion.
  15. Porky! How dare you suggest that the SAPS should actually work? H3ll thye get minimum wage (a wage / salary they agreed to on acceptance of the job and usually go out on the ramapage when they strike for higher wages.) Surely turning up for work with a pulse and occupying space in the station is sufficient for the likes of Joe Public. (OK, so there are some that work but really, how can you expect that they all work? Isn't that a bot unreasonable?) You are only a tax payer. I won't even discuss CSA. They get paid from the licence fees if I am not mistaken. And being a licenced ride, many expect them to work. Eish, what is the world coming to with all these people who expect work from employees and guvment oofficials.
  16. Pretoria - Taxi driver Percyval Matji was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by the Pretoria Regional Court on Thursday for killing a 16-year-old schoolgirl on a scooter. Passing the sentence, Magistrate Edmund Patterson said Matji's actions on the day of the accident were "terrible". "Your actions were terrible and cannot be justified or condoned," he said. Matji killed Bernadine Kruger in February this year, while she was riding a scooter to school in Garsfontein. He bumped into her and the front wheel of the minibus taxi drove over her, killing her instantly. Matji was found guilty of Kruger's murder a week ago. Patterson said Matji showed no remorse during the trial and only his mother Celi Mahlangu said he was remorseful when she was called to testify in mitigation of sentence. Mahlangu told the court Matji was a well-behaved child who was ready to help the community in his home town of Siyabuswa in Mpumalanga. Patterson said the sentence was not to punish him but to serve as a deterrent to those who drive recklessly and put the lives of law-abiding citizens in danger. Matji was declared unfit to possess a gun and his driver's licence and driving permit were revoked. - SAPA
  17. FWIW, in my opinion the problem of lawlessness in SA is at current levels because the law is not enforced stringently enough and justice is not seen to be done. Driver (road user) attitudes aside, it is time for the cops to enforce the law. It needs to apply to everyone. When one sees a taxi getting away with something, the automatic thing is well, if they can do it , then so can I. Wrong but that is the general mentality. Only way to change that is to make some public examples of people who break the law. Your idea of publishing the outcomes of court cases is a good one. I like it. But how many people read the new paper?
  18. Predictor, there is already a thread dedicated to this ideal to keep SBR open to cyclists. https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=46686&KW=Closed There are a lot of suggestions in that thread. I like the idea and will support you in any way I can. It is sucj an awesome place to ride. I like the idea that each cyclist be given a bib (which he wil have to hand back on completion of the ride) The number must be visible fromback and front and the cyclist signs in using that bib number. That was they can take action against each cyclist individually. Ban them or do whatever it takes to get them to comply with the rules. Not sure how they will control the littering by cylcists if they are not seen dropping their goo wrappers but if they are, ban them individually. That way, those who do respect the rules of the park and who do comply, can continue to enjoy the many benefits.. My wife is a seamstress. She can make up bibs at a very good price. Each cyclist either has his own (No bib - no ride) so he she can keep it cean, or Protea hotels can issue a temp bib for the once of rider. Each rider has a unique number for identification purposes.
  19. Yeah Porky. It is a bit like Russian Roulette. Except insteadof only havingone bullet, you have only one empty chamber. That road is constantly busy with high volumes of fast moving traffic and heavy duty trucking. I don't want to trash the memory of anyone but apparently he was warned about that particular road. It is a problem with our sport that it is a high risk endeavour. Most stuff happens at speed.
  20. This is the one runs from End Street, downtown JHB south, past the Market and City deep. Understand the accident happened closer to Steeldale.
  21. Guys, stop the bus. It can be fun to rave and rant and sometimes make ridiculous comments and threats. At the end of the day though, it is just that. Rva e and rant, get it off your chest and move on. Always remember that with great freedom, comes great responsibility. Let's not sink down to Ken's level and do the correct thing. Anger is after all the emotion that makes the mouth work faster than the brain. It was fun while it lasted. Buid a bridge, get over it.
  22. Heard from a friend of mine that he drove past what looked to be another cyclist fatality on Heidelberg Raod yesterday afternoon. He came of second best in an accident with a truck. I do not have any of the details. Please people, be careful out there. Take care of yourselves and FFS obey the rules of the road. Seems to be that this timeof the year, there are going to be many out training for the 94.7. Wear visible clothing and be seen. Condolences to the family and friends.
  23. Copy of my e-mail to Ken. Will let you know what happens. " Dear Ken, I recntly saw a copy of an E-mail you allegedly sent to Think Bike. Please be so kind as to let me know what it is that makes you think the the area in question belongs exclusively to you. I am just a little confused as I took part in this race on Sunday and would like to know what it is that upset you so much? I am also dismayed that you threaten the safety and well being of not only myslef, but fellow cyclists as well. You see, I take this sort of threat personally as many of my cycling friends have been killed and maimed by inconsiderate motorists who think the road is exlusively there for their sole use, as well as by pig-headed idiots who have no idea of how to opperate a motor vehicle. I look forward to hearing your comments. Many thanks and regards, Russell
  24. Get someone with a fictitious e-mail address to roder 2 tons or cold smoked trout from him for a do in cape town. Tell him it will be paid COD. Give an address in Hout bay or some junk. Then let him seethe afterwards and then same person can e-mail him and tell him it is because he is a major plick. Just don'y leton you are a cyclist because them he will really target us. Oh and do all the other stuff too, personals, wanted, for sale. the whole bit.
  25. The Dome "medal" was an absolute beauty compared to the piece of cr@ap they dished out for the Tour de Soweto. TDS was one of those "pin on" badges. Only the pin was removed and a ribbon inserted. All they do is collect dust and clutter up the house anyway. I usually write my race time on the back of them with permanent marker. Just because I like to brag about the fact that I can write.
