  1. Biltong any day. Carbon or Alu? (Steel is real. Not so Delgado?)
  2. Who cares? The riders make plenty out of sponsorships and endorsements anyway and what they do with it is actually irrelevant.
  3. Same topics being rejuvinated. 94 some change down Camaro on a roadie.
  4. Thanks Wendell, may just take you up on that offer of a loan bike. Terrified that the bug may bite 'cause then it'sjust a whole new buncha stuff to go out and shop for. Porky, if it wasn't clear in my post, the latest incident involving my neighbour and friend, Garry, happend at about 11 am. Strangest thing is, without the warning of this thread, I would probably have been on that same road, similar time. Not to say they would have taken my bike over GArry's, but one never knows, they may have taken both. I only left home at 10h30 on Sunday morning. There was a trucker that stopped to help. Otherwise it may have been more than just the bike. (Cell phones and who knows what else.) Trek6700, yeah, the cops have a rough time of it, but hey, I pay my taxes and I have a reasonable expectation that they do what they are paid for. That s to combat crime and ensure the general safety of the public. Issues start to creep in though because the law in this fair land favours the criminally intent. That is just one of the things wrng with the system. And then we can go further and say that the criminal justice system is a joke. Then again, we would be labelled racist and cosnsidered to be inciting public violenceand being political so let's just put the soap box away right now. Suffice to say, those who are not fit to be cops shouldn't do the job and rather find something else. Like teaching or nursing, it's a calling. You do it because you care and not for the "salary". I still say that the cops will do precious little about it and it will continue for some time to come. In the interim, please make sure you are never alone on the section of road between the river and the bridge. Prevention is safer than cure. As far as I am aware, Garry was jacked where the old railway line used to cross the road. And to think I have been on that section of road alone sooo many times. Not going to happen again, for sure. Once again Wendell, thanks for the head-up So for now dudes and dudesses, we will have to arrange special rides for those roadies like me who are too chicken to ride early in winter. Anyone want to get a group ride going from 8 am for the next month or so? Meet at Rietvlei, do a loop together and be epsecially sure to be together in a group up the steps.
  5. Bored huh BB?
  6. Trek 6700,welcome to the hub. Please note the health warning: This place is additctive and counter productive. The mods and fellow hubbers will not be liable for any side effects from prolonged exposure to this medium. 'k, on with the show. I hear ya mate. The cops have become a bunch of lazy @ssed people who do very little. Then again, I would not accept that sort of "salary" to be shot at and put up with all the other cr@p that they do put up with. So much is wrong with the whole system in my opinion.
  7. Some days riding can just be so serene and peaceful. Good to see someone with such passion for riding a bike. Thanks for the account dude. Gave me more reason to look forward to the weekend.
  8. Unfortunately the police are pretty powerless to act in cases like this. THere is so much other crime that they cannot attend to everything. I would very much like to set something up to catch these creeps and do them some grivous bodily harm, find a bridge and then dump them over it into the path of an oncoming truck. Yeah, Trubes, hectic stuff for a Monday AM, but I am very tired of burying friends killed in vehicle hijackings, having my radio stolen and hearing of all my cycling buds being taken down. Crime is out of control so maybe it's time we stood up to them. Take the fakers down, hurt them and then send them back to their "kassies" so they can tell their mates that there is certain disaster if any of them get caught in the act of crime. Oh, well, we can ony dream. These sods feel nothing for out lives or livlihoods and they will hurt us just as easily. Maybe the only language they will unnerstand is that of violence and retribution. Revenge is sometimes a thing of great beauty.
  9. Joe, only way it is going to get better is if we go out there, catch the baskets and beat the living shyte out of them. We have to warn as many people aspossible and tell them never to be alone on that section. Problem is they will then go and wait in another area to ply their trade. I am very much in favour of the former idea of catching them. Beat them senseless and then dump them into the river from the bridge. I also like the idea of putting a remote detonation pipe bomb into the frame and detonate it when they are about 200 to 300m away. I won't have a bike anymore but at least they will not be able to take anyone elses bikes again. SODS.
  10. Yesterday at about 11am, my neighbour Garry, was jacked off his bike. The MO was simple yet effective. GArry was chasing a small group of two ahead of himself up the steps. Three youths standing next to the road at the railway line crossing, grabed his handle bars as he passed, causing him to fall. They then shot at him with catapaults ("Catties) to prevent him from fighting back. A passing trucker saw what was happening and stopped to help. At this time the youths fled with the bike. Bike in question is a Ralleigh RC3000 road bike. The matter has been reported to the police. Fortunately Garry is not seriously injured even though he was hot twice by projectiles. Usual road rash is also in evidence. Guys, (gals) do not venture into this area alone. You have been warned.
  11. I'm with D*G on this one. The dude maybe crazy but he is skilled. If he falls he will loose the "s" as the prefix in "Skilled". Beeeg cajones to do that.
  12. R300 isn't really a lot of cash these days. I agree that it's a bit exessive for the odd coffee, coke or bar one, but if you stop for brekkie and then later for a bar-one and coke, that could cost 'bout R300 these days. OUr money is getting to more like the zim dollar every day. Oh,. BTW, there is already a hread that carries this story. "MTB hijacking in Alberton Area" by Wendell.
  13. Hugh, I live around here dude. I see some of them on some of "their bikes" and I often wonder, but that's another story we have debated on many threads. Thing is, the "commuter" looking for a way to get to work won't ask questions about why a particular bike is cheap. He will buy it without question. I do not believe the "market" needs to be extended beyond the township boundaries as there is a huge ready market right there. Most anyone would pay R200 for a bike and not know it's real value. If they did, they probably would buy the bikes and then come sell them back to us. Just my 5 zim dollars worth of opinion.
  14. Cool. Glad to know that some of these fakers have been caught. (May they rot in hell.) Problem is they are like flies, you kill one and twenty rush in to fill the gap.
  15. Thanks for the heads-up Wendell. Good to have this sortof intel. Helps plan ride routes. Quick question: The group rides you planning, are they just for MTB or are you planning some road ride groups as well? How safe is the Rand water road that runs parralel to Klip river at the back of the microlight air filed?
  16. Captain, I think there are enough people that want to ride on the west on the 6th. (Well that what the poll told me anyway.) I see no reason why you shuold pull the plug in this ride for thise who would prefer to do it. We can co-exist peacefully and I don't want to be the reason this ride is cancelled. Pleasere-think, put up a poll or something. Then the hubbers have a choice too.
  17. Got sent a questionaaire by Trubie and sent to you. Hope it helps.
  18. For what it's worth (and no, I haven't read al 5 pages) this is my take on it. When I ride, I get an average of say 30 k's an hour over most training distances and rides. Some places, I can get up to about 50 or so and others only about 15, depends on gradient. Assuming that motorist stick to the speed limit (Which we all know, mpostly they don't) youhave your 30 kph plus their 60 kph and if you are hit by one of them, it's a combined speed of 90. That is going to hurt a lot more than a speed differential of 30 if hit from behind. My SO and I were discussing this point of view on the weekend and that was the reason why I thought the idea was a bad one. Simple as that. We can also add to the pot, that on the wrong side of the road, a motorist is not expecting you to be coming from that direction and is more likely to run into you. Your choice. It is not what I am about to do. I will take my chances in the hopes that they can see me. Generally speaking, either way, motorists are blind and inconsiderate. If you are running, you have less speed and more agility to try and avoid a collision. Slowing a bike down and trying to get out of the way is a recipe for certain disaster in my opinion.
  19. You can say that again So, you gonna manage to get a load off?
  20. a sentence.
  21. As the voting goes, the Wld West is the more popular choice. I do not know my way around the west well enough to organise a route or the safety aspects. Who can do this? As for dates, tie between the two dates. Can some vote to break the deadlock. (preferably someone who hasn't voted before.)
  22. Depends on the qulaity of the equipment firstly and what is considered to be good management / cleaning / lube. There are some threads in Tech Q and A that deal with lubes. Higher end equipment will last longer than low end stuff. Since I have a road bike, I know not what the best of the MTB stuff is, but it should last a couple of years even at the lower end. My opinion only.
  23. If we do the nature reserve, then safety is a non issue. Very low volume of traffic and it is easier to break up into smallish groups. SBR has facilities for both road and MTB. Seems to be the ideal location with Karee Kloof right next door to have a braai and a beer / whisky / wine / cup of tea after the event. Racer, the hills in the reserve are far more interseting than the steps, promise.
