  1. Let the missus wear it on a ride down to Sandy Bay
  2. Off the see the painters regarding the touch up this week. Will let you know what my decision si although I am more traditional. Nice fork Thabiet. Weighed mine and could not believe it was almost 1kg (770g) with frame another 2 point something. P.S. who are you referring to when you say my daughter's gran? see above, confusing me big time.
  3. Sad. Whilst living in London just before the Boris (Barclays) Bike Hire scheme was introduced the locals kept steeling Boris Johnston's bike. If you don't know, Boris is the Mayor of London, yes the chap with the hair. Anyway after about the 3rd or 4th time he lost his bike he became a bit miffed and the media had a field day. It was funny. Unlike in SA his bike would turn up a few days later causing the police great embarrassment.
  4. 1st dibs!
  5. Thank you for the information Heyyou and for the compliments Quintonb. The lug work is very neat and a pity the paint work is not better. One day I will clean it up and see whether to respray or do matching touch up. I have the front wheel which has a Shimano 600 hub laced to a nice Ambrosia Aero Dynamic Durex rim. Complete with Tufa tubbie still in VGC. It would be nice to finish off in this era which I believe could be mid to late 80's. Probably need to source Shimano 600 crank, headset and look for similar back wheel. Have 600 detailers and brake set.
  6. This is a great thread and I have learnt a lot over the few months. Thanks all. I have few more questions: Is anyone able to identify this TT frame I came about? It has a sloping top tube with smaller 26in front wheel. In the http://www.thehubsa....frame-builders/ forum mention is made of Bill Lange (De 'Lange) and Robbie MacIntosh. Is my frame from this era and what was the tie up between the two? I have been thinking what to do with the frame but needed to be sure of its origin before destroying any historic value.
  7. So, finally stripped the 80"s Colnago Super I bought last year. The bike hadn't been ridden for years and was very dusty. Thoroughly cleaned to frame to see if she needs to be resprayed. IMHO I think I will not respray but rather have her scratches touched up and new logo's painted or fit new decays. What do you hubbers think? Initially I thought the colour was a deep wine colour but it looks more candy apple red, especially in the sunshine. Quite sad to strip off the old decals especially the head tubes but it needed to be done. The chrome will restore fully with only one or two small rust spots remaining after a bit of elbow grease. My thoughts at this stage are to have Colnago and the clover painted in white on the down and seat tubes, not sure of the top tube. Guess a visit to one of the airbrush artists is a first step.
  8. Painted brand names and logo's are much better than decals IMHO. Red always looks great!
  9. Contact Conrad Boulle (GM First Freight) 0824961580 conrad@firstfreight.co.z as he gives us hubbers a good price on shipment. I can’t recall Conrad’s hub name.
  10. Thank you, I saw your DHC. Thankfully you haven't destroyed it. It is nice. I too decided to convert an old Vitus 979 to SS and built it up without damaging the frame. There are lots of options and I used a chain tensioner for a bit with spacers filling up the rear freewheel hub. I rode it for a bit but I am now restoring it to as near original as I can get. Finished rebuilding another Vitus a few weeks ago which I am selling - see https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/73905-vitus-dural-979/ I live & work in Sandton so send me a PM when you are in the area and I would be happy to show you my bike(s). Also, plan to ride around Nector Norris Park at least once a week and so far Wednesday evenings have worked. IMHO, I would buy a damaged, or cheaper track frame and then go the full hog building it into a SS or Fixie.
  11. Hi Agter os, I am not an expert at this but IMHO you lose value if you respray an old bike that has future collector's value. DHC's from the 1970's would fall into this category if they were restored, or available for restoration. When you say you have converted the bike into SS what did you do to the frame? If you ground off any derailer parts (down tube shifter bits, front derailer braze on's and any cable carriers) the frame will already have been devalued as it could not be restored to its original "ten speed"status. If this is the case you can go ahead and repaint/customise. I have no opinion on repainting or powder coating - it's a personal choice and I so go with what style you like. Not sure if you are aware of this website but here are some beauties from around the globe. http://www.fixedgeargallery.com I resprayed my DHC track bike as it had a few previous coats since the late 60's, early 70's. Apart from the saddle, new tyres and new SRAM chain the other parts are near to the period as possible. Please post some photos of your DHC for us to look at.
  12. MTBaaisikilist Let me know when you going to Hector Norris. I recently restored an old 60-70's DHC with Zeus dropouts. Would love to have a ride around the track and compare notes!
  13. It is almost 2 years since the post was created, can anyone provide a review for the Wahoo Fitness RFLK + (iPhone repeater)?
  14. Heard some interesting descriptions for the Spruit but never: "holy grail of downhill trails!"
  15. Missed the Critical Mass ride on Friday evening as we had some visitors from offshore. Guess it must have been spectacular with the roads so quiet. Unfortunately, space and another project dictate the selling one of the steeds : https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/73905-vitus-dural-979-classic-56cm/ It is a great bike and only now I begin to appreciate why they were so favoured. Vitus climbs hills like no other, even my kings horses (Colnago's) battle to outshine the Vitus.
  16. What time is the start and do we need lights?
  17. Hi Deon My frame is very similar but the gear cables go under the BB. Your decals look to be in a better condition than mine. Dilemma is whether to respray or not. Will need to source new decals so thinking about a respray? The chrome work appears to be OK but will have a closer inspection after a clean. Very fortunate, my bike came with groupo in VGC. Nice Mavic rims. Interesting though, the 6 sped cluster is a Sachs from France and not a Campy cluster? Interested to know why. There are Campy groupo's available on e-bay including some very expensive NOS ones. Keep a look out, hopefully someone in SA is stripping down a bike.
  18. Looking for more bits and pieces I know I have somewhere I happened to stumble upon these: I wonder what happened to Brancale, their products were very good and I even had one of their first pot-style helmets in the day. Still looking for my leather strip cap (before helmets). I have an idea I lent this to a mate who never returned it!
  19. Thank you Heyyou! I have done a bit more research and identified my Super. The seller, who bought the bike brand new in the 1980's confirmed that he had not changed anything on the bike and was forced to stop riding after a serious motorbike accident. The Rolls seat is stamped '87 and therefore I can assume the bike was a 87-88 model. The Campy Croce dÁune group set appears to have been released in March 88 - the Delta brakes a year or two earlier. See http://campybike.com/ClassicEra.htm My frame is almost similar to the one shown in the VeloBase website http://velobase.com/Velos/ViewExample.aspx?ID=dedbd8ef-5dbe-4a5f-973b-4db705f3069e except that the dropouts on my frame are chromed and there is no "Super"on the chain stay(s). My frame also has the World Championship strips above and below the seat and down tube decals. My frame is branded Ïnternational" similar to the bike recently sold under the Steel Vintage Bikes site. This bike is said to be a late 80's model and the red colour and Colnago decals are different. http://www.steel-vintage.com/colnago-international-classic-bicycle-detail I stripped the bike yesterday and will give the frame a proper clean and post some photos in the next day or two. Thank you Heyyou, your help is highly appreciated!
  20. I have the same dilemma with a 80's Colnago Super I bought a few month back. The two larger decals on the down and seat tube are peeling a bit from the silver foil backing. The Super was an entry level frame in the Nago stable and therefore I don't mind repainting but the value of any frame normally drops once repainted. Ideally I would love to acquire a Master frame (size 54) and transfer the Campy Croce dÁune group set from the Super. Then respray the Super and get another group set. Good luck with the Olmo, please keep us updated as to what you decide.
  21. Thank you very much! On the way to get the chain sorted. The back sprocket is a 15T and the chainring a 51T. Don't have any spare sprockets at the moment but will see how it goes. I was never a sprinter and preferred the longer races at the time.
  22. Very, very nice. Love the "squared"BB lug.
  23. Please download some pics of the Olmo!
  24. Anyway, see what I was up to on Saturday: Recall the DHC track frame with Zeus dropouts I acquired a few weeks ago? I had the frame resprayed and assembled a few bits and pieces collected over time. Picked up some Faimme double eyelet rims on Suntour Superbe hubs. Boy did I have a battle cleaning off the old glue and getting the steel spokes sanded! Campy Pista 165cm crank with 51T blade and no name 15T sprocket. Refurbished Campy Gran Sport pedals with NOS Lapize toeclips. Campy 26.2m seat post (still with "patent"stamp) holding the borrowed Rolls saddle off my Colnago (still to find a period saddle). Steel Cinelli stem and track bars. These were painted yellow when I acquired them for a swap for a American Classic rear wheel! They weigh a ton but should keep the front end down in the sprint (hahahaha) Managed to find some old handlebar ribbon which looks nice. Now looking to buy some shellac to complete the look. Any Hubbers know where one can get shellac from? Bought new KMC chain but it's too short and going to shops later this afternoon for another try. Acquired some expensive Richley racing slick tubbies (manufactured by Vittoria) to round off the rebuild. Now to reattach the DHC badge and take the bike for a spin around Hector Norris park.
  25. Living in London and commuting along Boris' (as in Boris Johnson, major of London) cycle highway paths i often used to get overtaken by an electric. Quite popular especially with the ladies. Must say I miss the commute in the cold in Dec before the snow, had some very hot rides lately. Anyway, see what I have been up to this afternoon (if i manage to post photos).
