  1. Hey Mark, near misses on almost every trail i rode (okes riding up the single track, in the morning, of a public holiday, not sharp that), accentuated on the lower trails (below the red berm and further below that after the palette jump) where one starts getting blind corners. Yes this is an on going debate, yes people feel strongly about it, yes people will get grumpy Simple fact, there is no too much traffic and too many users now. Our sport hath grow-eth a lot...-eth. Executive decision needs to be made on the direction a trail and riders must deal with it. There WILL be a serious collision in the near future....I hope that an incident like that does not happen, but I feel it may have to to finally force a hand to make the call on directional use of the trails we use. Ja a bit of laterite, here and there... but I am talking about packed stone like the now famous corner in the Cobra trail....that is a piece of brilliance and is holding up better than anywhere else. With the sandy trails, it is the one construction technique that will work and last with the traffic Tokia is receiving. Imagine the snake trails being predominantly built in rock as the feature and material of choice, they would become very unique and extremely hard wearing. As for the crushed rubble - that would work, but it will introduce to many foreign materials into a national park setting. TMNP might have a hernia...
  2. Great to hear the enthusiasm to make the trails safer and more rider friendly. With regards to the building in the future, no amount of sand, clay or (cement) will help the trails now that the tree's are gone...the traffic count is too high and the soil bed is too sandy. Building in rock is going to be the route forwards, similar to the work done to Cobra. Someone better start making friends with a quarry.... And can directional signage please eventually finally desperately be erected. The amount of near misses and muppetry that is happening is not lekker!
  3. Agreed, what we consider a black route in SA is probably more similar to a red route for overseas riders
  4. Reward the riders that are skilled and fit....because if you are not and want to race at that level, then you need to up your game if you want to be competitive. As many have pointed out - fitness AND skill should be key and rewarded as such. If you going to have a technical area that forces the field to split, then similarly you should have a "fitness" type obstacle that will allow the B line riders to potentially catch up. If you can do both well, you deserve the podium! (That being said, I firmly believe XC courses should have the technical obstacles that makes the competitors consider using a dropper seat post on the day..... and has scantily clad beer maids at the "C-line" beer penalty)
  5. Pinion gear box on a Nicolai.... that will make a man go moist! The Zerode chaps made a prototype trail bike...that also is a thing of sheer beauty! http://www.vitalmtb....how,0/sspomer,2 Never mind the 1x14.....there's a 1x18, with all the weight in the middle and low down, think cornering will be immense on that bad boy
  6. Steven, you can do that with a single ring...so nothing that has shaped teeth and ramps/pins to pick up the chain to move it to a bigger ring. That said, that is a moer of alot of filing you have to look forward to...why not CNC the bugger?
  7. Ja, wouldn't buy it purely because its a Spaz! Also, they have the most unexciting boring gwinningest rider on their team. You would never say that cyclists are opinionated, would you...
  8. Shot - good to know. Still have to throw cash at the NW ring though....which I think Hairy is trying not to do? Hairy... is that about right? Also, I suppose it depends what type of riding you are doing...
  9. Clutch deraileur feedback - aim at higher end spectrum RD's from Shimano if budget allows....the more affordable ones have cam systems that wear quickly...even XT's have been know to give up quickly. The Zee seems to hold up well though, and obviously Saint and XTR are what we would all want to ride if financially possible (and Shimano users) The SRAM roller clutch system seems to wear better, but also come at a price. That being said the lower range clutches seem to hold out better than the Shimano lower end ones... Last but not least - 9spd SRAM shifter to 10spd Shimano clutch is so close to a direct match it is silly. I have X0 9spd shifter to Zee RD on a 11-34 9spd casette and it works like a charm....no adapters / spacers / nonsense
  10. Been running S/Steel 1x rings on my bikes for 3+ years....still works. That's saying: the same s/steel rings (1x each bike) for the last 3+ years and they are still going strong. They are probably about to be mated with their 3rd drive chain each. Clutch deraileurs and a top guide is all that's needed
  11. Simple thing will happen - budding sportsman will (again) move overseas and get the opportunities that they work so hard for. Local sport will take a down turn on the serious side. With that will go local funding and sponsorship, making us less competitive at international events..... which means we will be invited less and less to these events, which in turn makes us less competitive. which in turn............................you see where this is going. Sportsman want to be picked on merit and ability, to make the best possible team...if not, then you do not deserve to consider yourself a sportsman. Unless the elections lead to getting this ponce out of office...then maybe we may see something positive happening
  12. And there is some self loathing in there too...
  13. I have a forth gear on my SS - its called foulswearingcauseIcantpushthegearupahillsoIampissedoffcauseIamunfit
  14. ^^^^ what he said....also don't take your bike to a golf shop, take it to David...
  15. Flou - we can hook you up OEM seal kits or Enduro Seals at Stoke Suspension...drop us a line
  16. Motard - yes you can, you will need: Chain guard - affirmative, either an XC guide (top guide only) or a full guide (top guide+roller) will work. It will either be fixed via chain guard tabs or if you don't have, then bb mount guide. Or frame mount top guide only Spacers for the chainring bolts on the "male" side or shorter "female" bolts Clutch derailer and NW ring also works - as per Shaper above
  17. Top of the line kit, its an investment though. Their range of protective gear is also top notch! Contact: Craig craig@dbmulitsport.co.za 079 462 1253 www.dbmultisport.co.za
  18. The CTD FIT forks are all good, the Evolution series forks and shocks are a mess. 2014 stuff is better, but not great and the shock works well till it needs it first damper service - then it is impossible to repair properly. Save the money and at minimum buy a RS rear can. If you can, ditch the fork unless its a Factory FIT model....otherwise RS all the way! Either that or buy second hand pre CTD Fox that is in good order - you can service those in the kitchen sink, they are that easy to work on....almost
  19. You want to get your wife to start cycling...? Sell her car
  20. I found I had similar pain a while back, the result was my seat post was not extended enough and, although the angle of the saddle was comfortable, I needed to move it forward a touch. This put me in a more vertical line over the cranks and helped ALOT. When aiming for a saddle, test as wide a variety as possible. The one that fitted me the best landed up costing me 20pound - Charge Spoon (Edit - bike is a Morewood Shova ST with a 140mm fork - as opposed to recommended 130mm)
  21. Sounds like a seat post height / saddle angle issue.... which muscle is affected or which area of the leg?
  22. Desi - all strength to you for posting your story, and is serious food for thought...FOR ALL! I find it so sad and frustrating that we have to write these posts. At some point in the near future, unfortunately, it is going to escalate from one side or another. And until that happens, it feels like the powers that be are in the wings, having cheese and wine until someone says: "oh sh*t - did you see what just happened...time to do something"
  23. Wish their prices were more appealing.... I think it all started with their pinch bolt stem, if I recall it is the X4! Machined beautiful What I find less appealing is that Thomson are not making the frameset...pity. As for 27.2 droppers, they work and all, but flex like anything, which in turn wears the bushing/roller bearing. 30.9 is a better diameter platform
  24. Hmmm, simple solution really... Take money and buy a Jhb2C entry. Job done!
  25. Very nice, looks like a beast! Now please take the lights and bottle cage off.....tisk tisk
