  1. Because he wants to win. Let’s be honest here.
  2. People have been dropping down groups all the years to ride with mates. This is nothing new. Most of the lower groups are all about wheelsucking anyway. And if there are stronger riders there to help push the pace, then it means more wheelsucking so win win really.
  3. Many mtb’ers dont ride with lights. Many mtb’ers wear black as well. You should ask them the same question as well.
  4. Will keep that in mind.
  5. Not gonna lie, I was so tempted to jump into that river on Saturday. And then I just thought, the more time I waste here, the more time I have to spend in the sun. Then proceeded to waste 15min at the last water point anyway.
  6. The Slanghoek route has a mini climb in there. Enough to at least cause a split in the bunch I think. Still not really a climbers course but there is more elevation. I am concerned though about that low lying bridge on that route just before the climb. Last time I went over there it was in a terrible state and full of potholes.
  7. Okay so if the weather is anything like it was this past Saturday, i am pretty much screwed. Let’s just pray to the weather gods for some decent temperatures. Tall ask i know in February and in wellington.
  8. Great event. First time riding trails in that area so was a treat. I started in E batch as this was my first taste so there was traffic to deal with but nothing major i feel. The first 15km was great as it allowed the bunch to spread out nicely. Very Rocky area though which caught me by surprise. But it was great as it allowed me to sharpen my skills a bit. My only complaint, not really a complaint but more some feedback is to have registration the day before. That wasted a lot of time I felt. And then definitely an earlier start in summer. The elites started at 6:30am. A half hour earlier start in summer makes a massive difference. People were swimming in the river there just to cool off. It was boiling.
  9. 32 degree in Stellies tomorrow. So basically gonna feel like it’s 40. FML
  10. Temperatures in the winelands always feel worse than what the forecast shows. 30 degree will feel like 40 degrees in that area. So yeah, earlier start the better.
  11. I get all this. But I’m already doing Karoo2coast. Would have liked to have done both but obviously not possible.
  12. Pity this coincides with Karoo2coast.
  13. Yeah I enjoyed the race. Actually much more than the regular PPA races. I like the fact that no one is chasing time here and it’s more about position, so like an actual race. Also like the team aspect. We only had 3 guys available but was great to actually work for someone, albeit sacrifice yourself. Completely different to the PPA stuff. Also found it much safer.
  14. I entered Cat3 and then got bumped down to cat 4. Apparently the cat 3 bunch was too big so everyone that’s never done this series before automatically got moved down. This meant that we had probably around 20 Cat 3 guys give or take and the rest cat 4 which actually made for quite a tough race due the smaller bunch. Im not actually sure what happens now going forward. Do I stay with Cat 4 for the rest of the series? Do i enter cat 3 for the next race?
  15. Tbh I’m okay with the climbing. Will just go at my own pace and take them one at a time. It’s the descending that is the biggest concern to me especially the cliffhanger descent which is like 13km long. I’ve never descended that long in one go so shoulder fatigue is a concern and hands as well.
  16. Not sure what happened here but I was scrolling the website and somehow mistakenly hit the enter now button. And then somehow clicked pay. So yeah, after toying around waiting to enter the last 2 years and then opting out, I’ve finally entered for this one. I’m already kukking my pants.
  17. Well if you read previous posts, most have said the price has always been this steep so doesn’t look like the UCI thing as made much of a difference in terms of price. That being said, if you do a comparison with the Ronde Van Swartberg. Last year as a UCI race, I recall entries were definitely in the upper price tier of gravel events. Now that its no longer got the UCI designation, it’s definitely one of the more affordable ones. However, it is completely different organisers. You may have a point though 🤣
  18. Yeah I’m also trying to pick and choose now. Would honestly love to do more but with that price i cant justify spending so much. Unfortunately I am planning holiday during Around the Pot so that one is out for this year otherwise I’d have most likely done that. At the moment, I’m trying to decide between The Ceder or Race to the Sea. Initially the plan was to do both but seriously R 2,400 an entry plus petrol and accommodation. Looks like it’s either or for this year. Any suggestions from those who have done both would be appreciated.
  19. If you compare pricing to other gravel events, organisers are definitely milking the whole gravel thing. They’re all north of R 1,000. This one definitely the priciest of the lot especially if you missed the early bird. Compare this to pure mtb events like Trailseeker series as an example, you’re looking at under R500 an entry. So much more value there. Just confusing to me as to why gravel is so much more.
  20. Almost R 2400 per entry now that early bird has sold out. Didn’t even realise there was limited spots. Is this price normal or is this just because of the UCI designation now? Second question, is this route worth that entry fee?
  21. Maybe something to consider for a future gravel event then? I think you could possibly keep the route exactly as is but instead of finishing on adderley, take a right into Malans come up the hill and then instead of going up Vissers on tar, perhaps use the farm roads like they do in the epic prologue. You’d probably still have the traffic issue after the vissershok descent but perhaps make that a neutral zone and end the race at the top of one of those steep pitches on Vissers? Something to think about perhaps.
  22. This is a real pity. I remember in the past when we went over the gravel section on Malans and then did Vissers and then Odendal. Now that was a proper race. While i get that these things are out of your hands, it’s still a massive dampener to all to have all those stripped away.
  23. Yes it’s positive as it might attract international entrants and it also raises the profile of the event. I would not travel if I qualified due to financial reasons at this moment but it would be nice to have a uci medal in my collection.
  24. https://ucigravelworldseries.com/en/cederberg/ I see this race is now on the UCI calandar of events. Looks like it has replaced the Swartberg race so gives us here another option to do a uci race.
  25. Bike looks like it will disintegrate as soon as you sit on it.
