  1. Its been a really long time since I posted a project on here, I have been getting some small things done but nothing worth showing. Im mostly sharing in the joy of the bench Carrera4s is making, cant wait to see that one finished! At home we had a gap to fill to separate the garden off as a safe place to keep my dogs from being able to get to the gate. We have staffies and I dont want my babies getting stolen. So after two quotes it was pretty obvious that the walling companies dont like small jobs and so the pricing was insane. I decided to instead find a local welding works and get them to build a steel frame so that I could attach some garapa decking to it and make my own fence. There was a gap near the stairs that really bothered me so i ended up making a planter box to fill the gap and I think it came out quite nicely. The top few boards are a different colour on the fence because I miscalculated quite badly! they will all mellow into the same colour quite soon though, the lower ones have darkened substantially over the last few weeks. After a whole lots of pain I figured out a process that didnt keep turning the heads and threads off the stainless "self-tapping" screws I had. Process was: Clamp and align board using spacers and pulling any twist out. Drill 3.5mm holes through wood and steel. Tap with 4mm tap Drill wood out to 5mm without drilling steel behind it. Screw into new threads and hope the screw doesnt break! It took a long time and was very frustrating but this was the result.
  2. Wow great job bud, that looks really neat. Such a great use of space.
  3. I have the little one that you clamp on, I expected it to be a bit of a toy when I bought it. The amount of strength those screwed joints have vs say a butt join is insane! I really use that jig a lot, its perfect for making boxes and for so many other random tasks.
  4. It's such a foreign concept in my mind that it doesnt seem real. Here most government services are designed to be difficult to get resolutions, its often not worth the frustration.
  5. Filing consistent bevels. Those jigs are remarkably effective.
  6. That must take some getting used to. I think us Saffers left here have just resigned ourselves to avoiding anything public wherever possible.
  7. The cleaning tablets are mostly universal across brands, same thing for the descaling liquid. Filters I wouldnt bother with, its a lot cheaper to get a filter that attaches to a tap, you at least get to use that for other uses too.
  8. Yeah its pretty sad, my wife and I went through most of those personal changes in the last two years that you mention. It seemed like the natural way things were going to go if the planet is going to survive us humans. The only other thing I would add to you list is cutting down/cutting out eating meat. Hopefully the improvements we have seen during C19 last, things like lower pollution and less congestion. I doubt they will though, people will always slide back into old habits.
  9. R85k for the frameset? Err no thanks. It does look good though.
  10. If it was me then I would just drill out and tap up to the next size bolt. Might not be the prettiest thing but would be fully functional.
  11. Why does anything have to change? Did the world change after the previous pandemics that killed way more people? Sure it might take a while to get back to normal but assuming it cant go back to the way it was before seems nonsensical to me. Maybe Im naive and there is more to it, but we arent going to spend the rest of our lives on lockdown and hiding away from each other.
  12. Yup, the only way to get away from GSM is to use something like LoRa but I would assume that with MTB being a remote activity that there wont be an IoT style network running in those areas. If there was an IoT network then the device itself wouldnt be that complicated, there are lots of microcontrollers these days that have great deep sleep functionality so the battery could last pretty long if it just wakes up to do a position update.
  13. Yeah and you could do those things without your laptop being grabbed off at a stop light. I think that along with being surrounded by people who understand why there are certain rules and follow them are the things I want the most.
  14. Man that came out looking good!! very very nice indeed!
  15. I commented that Gaston could probably sell me anything in that first vid. The oke is a legend. If you watch a few more of Scotts videos his plumber mate is a saffer.
  16. Its very common in the states to use a leveling screw for a leg vise. Plenty of videos on youtube about making one.
  17. Im going to go out on a limb here before clicking the link and guess that is Pask's video... *edit* Winner winner chicken dinner! Been watching his videos for a really long time, Neil can make just about anything with bits he has on hand.
  18. Im in the same boat, I beat on Spez but their gloves are fantastic and the pricing is way better than most other brands.
  19. Strangely enough I know this place. I follow a Youtuber from NZ who has been there a few times and did a tour of the place. Great concept, you can learn skills or you can get on with it and use their equipment for a very reasonable fee.
  20. Cycling kit, like tools and anything else along those lines are pretty specific to an individual. My wife wont even buy anything for me when its birthday time, she knows I will have something very specific in mind and she wont know what it is. I honestly cant see this working without having input on what goes in the box.
  21. Amazing work as always! I still cant believe how many prototypes you have made and how much time has gone into that leadscrew!! it looks awesome and very strong.
  22. Add some pumice powder and you have Yorkshire grit. You could also add some diatomaceous earth and you have Yorkshire grit microfine. I use my home made solutions to get my turnings nice and smooth. but its very similar to what you did. Mineral oil and beeswax minus the BLO.
  23. Nope, things went very badly in the build or something along those lines. Come to think of it I dont think I heard how that all ended up, Patch?? Unless Im very much confused which I dont think I am.
  24. That right there is a can of worms you are opening!
  25. It depends on your connection speed and how latency sensitive your applications are. There has to be an overhead with encryption and decryption of packets in any VPN situation. Having a local POP helps if they have the bandwidth but its never going to be as fast as not using a VPN.
