  1. I got my stuff from CapeMail. There really was no invoice on the outside of the box (must have been ripped off somehow) so the delay wasn't CapeMails fault.
  2. My latest order has been held up at CapeMail because "they cannot find the invoice". I don't get that as CRC always put that on the box. Annoying!
  3. Thanks. I figured it out eventually Quite a neat mechanism.
  4. Hi All I purchased a set of Token Accura brakes 2nd hand and cannot figure out how to attach the brake cable! Its not the usual bolt and washer setup. Anyone know how to do this? http://www.tokenproducts.com/htm/products.php?pd=494 There doesn't appear to be a product manual download for these brakes on the Token site. Cheers David
  5. I was there just after it happened. I didn't realize that she was hit by someone. Her helmet wasn't just cracked or anything, it was stoved in on top and squashed flat. That would have been her head.
  6. Hi Guys I am considering buying some new wheels. I have been looking at these Easton models in particular: Easton EC90 SLX and SL The SL has a 38 mm rim. The SLX has a 25 mm rim. Both are around 1230g (apparently the SLX'es are heavier than advertised). I already have 45mm Corimas (approx 1400g) and find I don't use those in the Cobra et al due to the wind factor on descents. I have also not used them in some of the flatter windy races due to drag in crosswinds. It seems as though the 38mm wheel would be a better all round performer but I don't want to end up with another set of wheels that I cannot use on the windy races. Would a 38mm rim do down OKW in 70 km/h wind? Any other comments/suggestions? Cheers David
  7. It was nice to have some space to sprint at the end without having to squeeze into a 3m wide line and deal with cones of death! Great event and excellent weather! Thanks to the organizers.
  8. Riding one and very happy with it. It's not quite noname but who has heard of Pedalforce?
  9. Hi Guys I have heard and read mixed reports about using a normal road tire on an indoor trainer. Everything from "its cool if you don't mind exploded tire and tube all over the room" to "works fine, no problems". I need to get an IDT and this question has big cost implications. If I can use a normal tire on the IDT (maybe at a lower pressure or something) I can use my Powertap wheel to track power and record the session. If I cannot then I need to get an IDT that measures power as I don't want to have to keep changing the tire on my PT wheel. The latter is much more expensive especially if I want to be able to download the session etc. So what are your thoughts? Cheers David
  10. I like my Corimas but they are they only deep section tubbies I have owned so I don't know how they compare to others (stiffness etc). I read a lot online and it seems there is not too much difference aero wise and so on between corimas zipps and some others. I got them in as new condition second hand for 10k. They are the only thing I have bought for my bike that made an immediate speed difference though. It really is a km per hour or so if you are doing 35+. I now also have flashpoint 60 clinchers. They feel similar but are much heavier due in part to powertap sl hub so I won't race those except on double century when flatting a tubbie would annoy my team. Bought them for the PT.
  11. I have Corima Aero tubbies and only use them for racing, that way its not such a pain running tubbies. I have clincher wheels for training. Better for t-boning cars and so on. I decided that if I was going to spend a bunch on wheels I didn't want the weight penalty of clinchers (and I don't have 45k for Lightweights!).
  12. My max is 193. I was once running along the Sea Point promenade and a wave broke over me .. I sprinted to get out of the way and my HR shot up from 170 to 220 for 30 secs Adrenaline I think.
  13. Not just lighter but less weight on the rim -> less weight to spin up -> quicker acceleration. Deep section carbon wheels may also be stiffer as the spokes are shorter.
  14. The 705 is sold on CRC with "basemaps" whatever those are. Do you have to spend extra over there to get UK maps or are they included? If so why do we have to pay R999 for SA maps? The 705 with heart rate is 3785.13 + 14% VAT + R25 clearing = R4340. Even with an extra R999 for maps that is a lot cheaper. The 305 with heart rate is only 2752.79 and you don't need maps. Of course you will have to tack on some tires or something to get over R3175 for free shipping
  15. The Tokens are a little heavier (218g vs 168g) but they certainly look very cool
  16. You can get them cheaply on CRC (under R4000). http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/SearchResults.aspx?Search=garmin+705 I don't understand why Garmin stuff is so expensive here. I suppose it won't come with SA maps? That doesn't matter for the 305. I bought the 305 I used to have on eBay. davidtinker2009-05-27 09:26:07
  17. Thanks for all the info guys. I will look at Token breaks as well. Yes I was one of the guys involved with JDO Genie, not that I did anything other than code in those days! PM me your email .. funny where people show up!
  18. They are super light (168g for set) and not too expensive (approx $270 on eBay). I have found conflicting reviews on the net as to how well they stop. Anyone here used them? Anyone know where to get them locally?
  19. Any suggestions on where to get a wheel built with powertap hub in CT? How much should that cost?
  20. Thanks guys. One of the referenced sites had a link to a calculator. http://www.braydenwm.com/calburn.htm "energy expenditure is a linear function of heart rate over the range of approximately 90 to 150 bpm. In other words, it is a straight line. As you would expect, everyone has their "own" straight line..." I filled in some of my figures and it comes out just under 1000 kcal. So Garmin may be using something very similar. Interestingly the page discusses deriving average power from kcals burned and the calculator displays that as well.
  21. Hi Guys Do any of you know how Garmin GPS cycle computers (e.g. Edge 305) calculate the calories burned on a ride? I have noticed that it is directly proportional to the weight entered on the device. Does it have anything to do with heart rate? Or is it just distance and altitude climbed? I am 73kg with 9kg of bike and water and use about 1000 kcal an hour on a typical ride around the peninsular. Cheers David
  22. Thanks for the info. I also got a mail from Johan Bornman pointing me at the DT Swiss website. I found some instructions: http://www.dtswiss.com/getdoc/99a9c909-cc61-4fe4-b472-181391c86013/Datasheet.aspx So I need an Axle vice and basically just have to pull the end off as you suggest. The DT Swiss doc also mentions a tool to use for the rear hub the the rotor is stuck. davidtinker2009-03-25 06:22:12
  23. Hi Guys Does anyone know how to get at the bearings in a Bontrager Race X Light front hub? I cannot see any way to remove the axel (no flats for spanners or anything). My Corima wheels are real easy so I suspect some trick that a hubber might know. Thanks David
