  1. Is either one a better design? If so why?
  2. You replace the nylon bush with a ceramic bearing. This means that when you freewheel you are spinning a bearing and no running a bush over the hub body. The kit is sold with everything needed to do the conversion, even a tool to size the hub body if you are in the fortunate position to have no wear. Mine worked out to about R340 where as a new freebody is ~R500. The guy who makes these are in the states and I had somebody bring it over for me.
  3. As you might know the Mavic Freewheel body uses a nylon bush. If this starts wearing out, which it does and it will again and again, you have three (four) choices. a) Buy a new freebody since Mavic does not sell the bush separate b) Buy an aftermarket bush which will wear again c) Throw the wheels away - call me d) replace the bush with a bearing I've gone for option B and then D. My freewheel now has ceramic bearings with less drag and (very important) less maintenance!!!! What a pleasure. I can now eventually enjoy my Mavic wheels without fearing the next loud screech as I go down a hill. Let me know if you have this problem I might be able to help. Fixed the typo
  5. Standard practice these days. Had a similar run in with them. For reference the rules of engagement are the following: a) if you are white your are racist b) if you are white you are wrong c) if you are white and try to plead your innocence refer to point a above Sad but unfortunately true
  6. you've got the tune now just write the lyrics Not much you can do. In a wet race this is all you hear You do get some fancy (expensive) pads that are not supposed to squeal in the wet but I have never tried them.
  7. Common problem in SA and not found only in the bicycle industry. To try and protect their monopoly (read price ripoff) some motorcycle distributors actually refuse to sell you spares if you did not buy through a valid dealer (grey import). They will ask the VIN and if it was bought grey they won't sell you a spark plug. Idiotic if you ask me.
  8. no' date=' but the bike shop and manufacturers will say yes. Just look at at he amount of carbon bikes out there and how many of them end up in the D-Z starting groups.[/quote'] +1 Also more expensive mostly, not always, means more reliable because better materials are used. But I have found cases where the opposite is true.
  9. OK maybe we should make a distinction between EXPENSIVE vs CRAP wheels. Inexpensive does not = Crap. Yes if you have crap on which the hub freebody is sticky and does not work as it should then riding a brick will be an improvement. My understanding of the question is 'if I have a perfectly working pair of 1K wheels, will my performance benefit from a perfectly working pair of 6K wheels?' The answer is no unless you are a pro where the weight of your jockstrap make a difference. Yes a ceramic bearing has lower resistance but will average Joe notice it in his performance?
  10. Yes if you are a pro No if you are a average Joe
  11. Not sure what your lines are made of but usually a pair of side cutters will do the job. Again depending on the specific type you will need a new ferrel (collar) that crimps and seals. To bleed will again be specific to your brake type so check the manual or google it but the principle is the same - squeeze level, open nipple, close nipple, release lever and repeat until all air is out, keeping the reservoir topped up with fluid (could be mineral oil or dot 3 depending on your brakes) Now if you know what you are doing and you are very careful it is possible to shorten the line and re-attach without the need the bleed. I've done it many times.
  12. Well this is not something you are going to fix with direction. It's a mentality and these are most probably the same guys who ride 5 abreast, go upstream on a single track and fart while peeing.
  13. I would confront him but not when you are alone. If it's stolen chances are good that he will drop everything and bail.
  14. Worn chainring guaranteed. Likely the one you use most often.
  15. With a compressor the sidewalls should blow out towards the rim. What works best is to slowly role the tyre while inflating. Also you need to use lts of water and soap for the first time. Mamparas idea is also good if you cannot get it going. Just a side note on using non UST tyres - the sidewalls are very thin compared to UST and getting sidewall cuts is very easy. Also if you flat on a ride it is very difficult to inflate a tubeless non-UST if it went down all the way.

On how long the Gautrain will last before being burned, stoned or stolen? What is it with people who think that they can fix something by breaking more stuff? 17. What is the main reason for people opposing MTB in the forest?
  18. 1 - common sense is not as common as you think 2 - if you ever find out why 'educated' cyclist do these types of thing we will be able to resolve all issues including roadies vs MTB, cars vs bicycles and motorcycles vs bicycles
  19. Most presta valves can be removed. If yours can't get ones that can. Remove the valve then use a syringe with a piece of rubber tubing (diameter small enough to fit over syringe tip and valve extension). If you are done blown some air in without the valve to remove sealing fro the threads and then screw valve back in. If you cannot remove the valve then unpopping a section of tyre is going to be easiest.
  20. Something else to look into is possible freebody bush wear. The Mavic FTS-L and FTS-X freehub is notorius for nylon bush wearing out on the freebody. If this is the case no amount of spacers will fix the problem. Mavic does not sell the bush separate, you have to buy the whole freebody or an after market product. Do a Google and you will find plenty of info on the problem. PS. I have a spacer if you want.
  21. I have to agree that magnesium deficiency is highly unlikely unless you have some special heath condition. For the normal everyday joe the cure for cramps is more training. There is no silver bullet.
