  1. They have added a new piece of single track at Groenkloof just before the end of the loop. Really awesome. It included a new bridge. Go and try it.
  2. Have to agree. 9am is really the pits. Personally I would prefer a 6am start but anything earlier will do. Early morning with the sun just up is the best part of the day.
  3. Personally I won't
  4. Short answer is yes it is possible BUT it will take more than a bit of a knock to cause any damage.
  5. Stay away from single tracks that does not have a fence around it and a security guard at the entrance! You could ride at Rietvlei which is safe and not technical. From the distance and speed you are doing I believe it will suite your needs. I also live in the area but unfortunately can only ride on Wednesdays in the week.
  6. Why not have the option to get the bib as well?
  7. not really, just partially fixed to reflect the true winners. The fact that people had to wait 5 minutes to cross the timing device while waiting for the whole of B group finish has not been corrected. Well at least they now have some claim to fame. You can bet your salary that PDF will NEVER be deleted of their PC's
  8. But I believe Mampara is still correct. Putting the longer travel aside for a moment, if all the travel is taken up and the d?railleur defaults it is because it ran up against the limiter and could not engage properly.
  9. Look at the TdF pics in the latest Ride to see how cool a Garmin looks on a road bike especially if it is color coded.
  10. Permission to jump red lights granted but I have some probing questions: 1) What the hell are you doing riding on tar [read roads with traffic lights] in the first place???? 2) Who let the pensioner out on the streets. They are just as dangerous on foot as they are on wheels. 3) What is best - tube or tubeless?
  11. Depending on your weight the 2bar might actually be a little too hard. I'm 75-80kgs and run 1.8 at the back. At about 2bar my backend starts skipping over the rocks
  12. I remember some time ago there was a discussion about scuffs on the crank arms etc. Can for the life of me still not understand why it should be a problem but this might be of interest to those who like to pimp their bikes and keep the scuff demon at bay Must admit it's quite cool. http://www.crankskins.com
  13. The idea seems GOOd. Would love to try one to see how well it works. Referring to the fuel injection but the dryer could also be quite handy http://www.zerogoo.com chuck2009-08-28 00:02:21
  14. Not sure what you define as hub but for the freewheel stay away from grease. Use only mineral oil. For bearings your LBS will be able to help you with bike grease that has teflon. I suppose you could use EP grease but I would rather go to the extra trouble and get proper stuff.
  15. No, it's just an extrapolation of the type of things you could be fined for when you kill or hit a cyclist. Typically when a motorist hit a cyclist or pedestrian they get charged with something stupid like reckless driving, given a fine of a few rand and then because this is only the second time you paralyzed a child it is suspended. I got taken out by a taxi a few year ago while riding in a +3m yellow lane. I was dragged for ~30m before a traffic cop who saw this happening stopped the bastard. Result for me - 3 months in ICU, 12 months not working, 10 years later I still sit with problems. Results for bastard - R50 suspended fine after the state refused to prosecute because of lack of evidence. I eventually got bastard to court on my own time and money and got zip.
  16. Marshals like thinkbike at races definitely help but the unfortunate reality is that when we go to the road cyclists are still sitting ducks. And it will remain like this until something is done about enforcing some laws. Nothing will change how other road users feel about by life, or that of my children, unless there is some tangible consequence for your actions. This is true for all modes of transport. You don't like the biker in front of you? Kill the idiot, it's a bargain at R500. Cyclist taking too much road for you liking? Remove her from society for a mere R50 suspended fine. If you manage a kill it could set you back as much as R1500. Bottom line - until they stop chasing money by sitting in the bush instead of doing visible policing we're screwed. Pessimistic? Maybe. Realistic? For sure.
  17. Highly usual for something like this to happen. Is it UST or conversion? I have both and never had any issues. The fact that you could not inflate using the pump at a garage is really scary. This could only be because of VERY bad rim or VERY bad wheel.
  18. No need to change FD (except if it's broken or you want to) and do the SLX thing. Chain will also not be an issue except if it is already worn. I upgraded to SLX while keeping my budget 8 speed kit. No compatibility issues at all. Only upgraded to 9 speed after a few months.
  19. I would concur with BigBen here. I sometime get this when I pull the straps too tight.
  20. Agree with miggie. "Family" should be applied accordingly. It does not imply that your 97 year old gran who had 2 hip replacements will be able to do it. She might but it's a matter of using proper judgment. You can surely not blame the organizer because Joe decided to drag little Bonita's ass over the 500m hill?
  21. Ah ok. I was actually talking wheelsets. Not sure about just the rims.
  22. I believe Fulcrum is good but it's a bit too expensive for me.
