  1. I took friends who dont MTB at all to Oak Valley in December and they managed. There will be bridges over fences that she will feel more comfortable walking and also you cannot be scared of cows as you ride into the herd occasionally. Also...cow poop. Try roll your eyes less than I did as the newbies pushed their bikes up the hills
  2. you have enough great (and free) riding in somerset west. i wouldnt head all the way to Tokai unless you are dropping the wife off for the race and staying in the area. Otherwise do Bottelary Hills, the G-spot in Stellenbosh, Jonkers. Maps online. Ask om a forum for people to ride with and im sure you can find someone
  3. Avoid reading Bicycling's latest issue on winter gear because you might have to sell your bike to afford the outfit.
  4. Anyone doing this race and driving from Cape Town? Got a free entry but already staying in Grabouw the following weekend for Houw Hoek tour so would prefer to not stay over. Looking for someone to share driving with (for Arabella)
  5. I did it last year in my third month of mountain biking and the 40km was a breeze. The only "technical" bit is the one and only climb, which is quite rocky. And there will be a lot of sand because this is Franschhoek. Considering doing the 60km this year but will also watch the Paarl MTB site and see what group rides are planned, or maybe just go to Franschhoek and ride with my local friends above the dam and on Matoppie.
  6. well judging by my time for this race, you can start at the back of K2C with me haha
  7. Anyone doing this race? Got a free entry to the 2-day mountain bike event but as I also have Houw Hoek tour the next weekend Im looking to share transport costs to the Arabella race from Cape Town. PM me.
  8. I could use it to roll my ass out after a ride if it were firmer - the ball, that is
  9. Why dont results list the people who started for the 46km as DNF? Definitely more than 13 people behind me at the last water point. Plus the chick who dismounted at the one steep downhill, thereby seriously injuring the reputation of all female riders. Grrr. It was not possible to miss the 30km/46km split they were massive boards. Please can we have a show of hands which of you got this wrong so that I never drive with you. (going to bed now so can wake up with regained pride and ride the road bike which will surely be more forgiving)
  10. omg i came 120/133. I need to retire from this sport...lol
  11. So i caved in and decide road riding is actually pretty cool even though you can get smooshed by a car/truck/taxi and bought myself a Cannondale Synapse 5 yesterday. We plan on having a very long and successful career together.
  12. whew cant decide if that was tough or not, i think i suffered in the heat and was glad the last 16km were quite flat. Thanks to a guy called Shaun on a Momsen that rode along the flats with me, was good to have a buddy. And thanks to legend hubber Milky for the ride - what a cool guy. (and his wife must be pretty cool too since she allows him to ride and race and they have a six week old baby boy!). Well done guys and girls, rest well. Racetec is hanging so i dont know my time but it was around 3.35 i think....
  13. s'cuse me! Im doing the long distance. Look for me in a Kate Slegrova Cycle training jersey and on a Scott dual sus.
  14. do it...real men have leg hair
  15. thanks - the route doesnt look very tough at all. I would prefer it a little longer and closer to 1500m climbing but hey! And as for family, I have two kids - Scott and (Cannon) Dale.
  16. love that - the bike stalled. Damn engine Nice one!
  17. yay i just posted this on another forum and a kind hubber directed me to you. Lets do this!
  18. Keen to do the 46km Breede MTB on April 12 (Saturday) but petrol costs are hurting. Anyone keen to travel together? My car or yours... Race starts 8.30am so would have to leave Cape Town at 6am. PM me.
  19. ok so what is the verdict? where did you go and how much fun did you have?
  20. ja did the white route 2 weeks ago so tmrw its the black route. with my hubber friend who has done the Epic so he will be chasing me hard (at least thats his excuse for staying behind me)
  21. ok clearly i need to do Majik properly - anyone keen to show me around PM me? RIding Welvanpas again tomorrow so either Sunday or next weekend...
  22. reading the article, that lock looks like something serious! But gotta love this bit "And they encouraged people to ride cheaper bikes. After all, the resale value of a bike—and its expensive components—is what makes the thing worth stealing" - maybe in America, in SA often the bike thieves have no clue of the worth of what they are stealing. A friend had a bike stolen from remote garage in a complex in the Southern Suburbs but they left the expensive one. I had my first (cheap) MTB stolen from my garage, now I choose not to have a house mate and I have a bike room instead for peace of mind. And did I mention the double burglar bars on the room, including Trellidor on the inside? And insurance all the way.
  23. oh and if you're not running tubeless you will prob get punctures at Majik, the devils are everywhere....
  24. no insults to the guys who work hard on securing land for us to ride on, but I've ridden Majik once and we really didnt enjoy it. I would rather suggest going to Meerendal, its better marked (so you dont have to keep stopping and asking people where to go) much more beautiful and more fun.
  25. From what I understand doing a sub 3 in the Argus is seriously seriously difficult and no cyclist who achieves this is average! I really want to do this http://www.cadencecycling.co.za/ as they have great coaches and programmes but their location (Tygervalley) and class times dont suit Good luck with your goals!
