  1. I had exactly the same conundrum. I arrived at my decision as follows: 1. What is the goal I want to achieve with my bike? - for me it was to enjoy and improve my multi-stage races. Here the Epic wins hands down because of the brain and the easier ride it provides over long periods in the saddle. 2. What type of riding am I most likely to do? - at the moment it is most likely to be trail riding of not more than 2 hours. Here the Camber is a better option. However, as my training time increases and the rides start exceeding 3 hours, the Epic starts taking the lead again. 3. Is the difference between the Epic and the Camber that big on shorter trail rides to give up to comforts of the Epic for longer rides and multi-stage races? - IMHO no. The Camber was slightly nippier, until I started getting used to the Epic. Once I got used to the Epic and a 29er, I am easily beating times in tight technician sections were, theoretically, I should have been better on my 26er or the Camber. It then became a very easy decision for me.... Epic all the way! What was a tougher decision was deciding between the Expert or the Comp Carbon (at that stage I didn't know the Elite was available). The Comp Carbon comes with mostly XT groupset. BUT, it doesn't have the front brain or carbon wheels. I was also unsure about the brakes on the Comp Carbon, and the SLX shifters were a step back from my current XT shifters. The Expert has the XTR rear derallieur and carbon wheels. I then discovered the Elite version. It has an X0 (XTR equivalent) RD, X9 (XT equivalent) shifters, and the same brakes at on the Expert. It also has the front brain which was a big seller for me. The only thing it didn't have was the carbon wheels, which I can always upgrade in time. So I jumped at the Epic Elite and have loved every second in the saddle. If fact, instead of replying to this thread I should be getting ready for my next ride... first ride at the Hero Trail at Heia. Feel like a kid on Christmas every time I take my elite on a new trail!
  2. See some people go for a combination of the two. Ralphs in front and Rons at the back.
  3. I was on full XT on my last full sus. My new Epic has X0 and X9 and I have found them incredibly smooth, more so than the XT. The new bike is only about 200kms old so I still need to see how they perform over the long run, but all the views out there suggest that SRAM don't need to be tinkered with half as often as Shimano. Once set, they hold position. Hold on to the SRAM and upgrade wheelset or brakes.
  4. and here is a question: Looking at Rocket Ron and Racing Ralphs as a combo. Any suggestions/advice (for a 29er)? Previously had Wolverines on my 26er and they were fantastic.
  5. Doesn't the Specialized brain work on a similar concept, distinguishing pedal bob vs ground hits? Through a hydraulic system this then increases or decreases the damping effect.
  6. I picked up a Shimano bleed kit from Linden Cycles last year.
  7. Good initiative. Although I have strayed on to private land once or twice simply by getting lost. So as long as it's a fair process that recognises that getting lost happens. Guess why they say you will only be banned if you are found to "regularly" trespass.
  8. Strong legs all
  9. Nice woodie (and I meant the bike)!
  10. Niiice!!! Pics on the speshy thread please...
  11. If you are planning on spending more than 3 hours in the saddle or multi-stage races then duel suspension is the only option.
  12. LBS recommended pressure at 2 bar. Found the front to slip out a little. Pumped both up to 2.3 this morning and the ride felt much better. The recommended pressure listed on the tire is 2.5 to 3.0 bar, which sounds quite high to me.
  13. The speshys just look untouchable in the Matt black!
  14. Almost as hot as that defender in the background? See you have kept the s-works and fast track tires on. How you finding them?
  15. But you still can't help staring at more on this thread... I understand completely! ????
  16. Comes with an old school bike stand ????
  17. Ooooobh, marathon out my budget but what a beauty!
  18. Looks like 2014 epic or camber? Haven't see. That colour... nice!
  19. From Melrose Arch. Haven't seen the Epic Elite around much and not on the US website, but I think you can get more of them if you ask your LBS.
  20. Can't believe this thread hasn't appeared yet.. Here is 2014 Epic Elite : Specs at: http://www.specialized.com/es/en/bikes/mountain/epic/14epicepicfsrelitecarbon
