  1. I don't cycle the cradle but well done to the PPA for cleaning the place up. Money well spent and credit to them. I was not aware they did anything at all up here.
  2. I expressed an opinion you didn't agree with. I didn't insult you. You had a go at me implying the thin air up here was affecting my thinking. Then you say I'm moaning needlessly and I should go play bowles instead. Try to accept that not everyone will always agree with you. Try to understand that if someone doesn't agree with you that it is not an attack on your thinking. Just chill. It's not life or death. Save your energy for the important stuff. Good greif.
  3. Perhaps you did I don't know. I never studied either. What I did study was running my own business and spending money where I get a return. When I race up here in the thin air iI get commisaires and bike marshals. Regular mail keeping me informed about cycling events in SA and about our cyclists overseas also find there way into my inbox courtesy of the CSA. From the PPA I don't get anything. I'm not saying CSA is perfect far from it. By the way my favorite thing about the Argus was always how they never put safety pins in the race pack but allow one guy to sell them at a premium on the way out of the expo. Does that still happen? Lovely touch that.
  4. That's cool. The Krupps is not great I all honesty.
  5. I feel as much for the PPA as I feel for the stormers. Far away and nothing to do with me. I don't see how this decision can be good for cycling. Loads of money enters the PPA coffers at Argus time and I'm believe most of the entrants are not even from the Cape. That money sure does nothing for cyclists outside of the area. It's been a long time since I did an Argus. Be a longer time before I do another one.
  6. Forgot about this. You want the grinder or not? And I have a question for the clever guys. I have struggled with milk steaming. Some days it's perfection. Soft creamy micro foam. No big bubbles. Other days I fight with the milk and unless I lift the want out the milk now and again I get no foam. The result is ugly large bubbles and non of the soft creaminess. Now I think it might be the milk. I find it easiest to steam the Ayershire full cream from woollies. The next best for me is clover. But even then somedays I just struggle. My question is could it be milk quality? Could it be something else. I am very careful to clean the wand after every use and purge it after steaming. I always use the same jug. Steam the same quantity of milk. I try to be as consistent as possible with try technique. Any ideas anyone?
  7. The other 10g won't be fibre. Fibre is either water soluble or non soluble and neither are digested. They aid the passage of material through the digestive system. The 10g not simple sugars will be starches and so on that your body will convert to sugars. I am also not a boffin but that is my understanding
  8. Carbs are 50g I would say. Eat that and you have done your carbs for the day. 40G are simple sugars and the remaining 10 are more complex carbs. Not a great profile for this diet.
  9. Oh yes. Made a big difference. What really made it work that year was being forced by a coach to do a proper base block before beginning with the intervals. It was great how effective the intervals were.
  10. I agree with you Dave. You need to train intervals and also tempo. I was doing 2 twenty minute intervals with a 20 minute recovery just below my threshold last year. Man it was rough. Made me quite emotional. To me cramping is an indication my training wasn't hard enough. I don't see why LCHF should cause cramping in races if you are using enough carbs while racing. My gut feel is LCHF people tend to spend a lot of time enjoying base intensity as the diet makes you good at that and not nearly enough time at high intensities where carbs are being used.
  11. While living LC I have no intention of racing like that or even doing hard training like that. 20 minutes into a ride the gloves are off and I eat carbs. High GI. As much as I can cram in my face.
  12. I'm also uncomfortable with the demonizing of all carbs. Having said that my carb intake in very low at the moment as I'm trying to lose weight. When just maintaining I tend to eat a bit more carbs. I think it depends on individuals though. Eating carbs in moderation seems to do me no harm. I am also a bit surprised when people say that being fat adapted has allowed them to do 2 or 3 hour rides at moderate intensity on only water. I regard that as perfectly normal and have always been able to do that even on a high carb diet. On the other side thee sure is something wrong with the way we eat. Sitting at a restaurant on sat morning I looked around and was shocked at the shape of the people. Guzzling cokes and eating piles of toast and flapjack things. Anyway a week on low carb now and I'm feeling good. Forgot to weigh myself this morning but my jeans are feeling a lot more comfortable.
  13. Five days on the diet. First 2 days it seemed all I did was eat. Settled down to it now. Wake up hungry at about 04:00 every day. Dropped almost 1kg so far. Not too much riding, just 2 sessions on the trainer. Feeling pretty good. Yesterday was the first day I battled a little. Felt a bit light headed in the afternoon First time on this diet as a non vegetarian. Much easier eating meat. Much greater variety of food available and I feel better than I did on the vege diet. Hope to lose another 6kg in the next 3 months to get me to my target weight of 74kg. Hope to hit a race weight of 72kg at the end of the year.
  14. I'm a roadie. Well mostly. And I like lots of gears.
  15. Hahaha. Thanks but I don't drink at all. I don't want anything for it. No problem.
  16. Dude you can have it. I don't need it.
  17. I have an oldish Krupps I no longer use. Just don't have the heart to bin it. I see you are in Gauteng. If you can collect it you can have it. PM me.
  18. Not so much unpredictable once I figured it out but so different to all the other beans I have used. Bottom line was I found the taste harsh.
  19. I have. On 2 occasions when I ran out from my regular supplier. I struggled to get my grind right and went much finer eventually. Didn't really like the coffee.
  20. I don't think I can do bullet proof coffee. I like coffee too much. I really really like coffee. Spent some time in Tibet and with the Tibetan community in Kathmandu and India and quite liked Tibetan tea. I'm going to experiment a bit with that. Tea, butter and salt with a bit of bicarbonate I think. Perhaps I can incorporate coconut oil into the mixture. No diet is getting between me and my morning cappuccino.
  21. Hmm I did read most of it. And most of it is beyond me quite honestly. But the first three studies mentioned are interesting. 1 the first one states that a LC diet based of vegetables results in a lower mortality rate than one based of animals. Not really a comparison between LC and HC is it then. 2 the second study speaks of LC but high protein. A So nothing to do with this thread then 3 the third paper is a analysis of observational studies. Not double blind medical advice what ever that may be. It should be remembered that data is not the collective noun of anecdotal evidence. Still thanks for the debate. It's an interesting subject that is for sure.
  22. Contrarian views are quite welcome on this thread North Shore. I should know, I have posted quite a few myself. What interests me is why you chose a disparaging term as in " on the deaf ears of the evangelized" in order to make your point? It's not a smart way to open a logical debate where people might listen to your point of view. It is far more likely to get peoples backs up and lead to a mudslinging contest. So let's try again shall we. You don't agree with the diet and that fine. Many parts of it I am also uncomfortable with. Please tell us in your own words what experiences you have had or heard of that have made you doubt the safety of the LCHF diet so that we can all benefit from what you have to say.
  23. I hear you on this issue but one thing bothers me a bit. I'm getting about 20 g of rice. Not much. One banana and one apple is pretty much most of the rest of my carbs. I would like about 100g a day. Today I don't think I got near that. Anyway with all the snacks today I feel quite full. Salad and that it for the day. One thing I have found helps me is I brush my teeth after my supper. For some reason it stops me raiding the fridge for snacks in the evening.
  24. Day one of my second attempt at this diet. This time as a meat eater. I hope it is easier and more fun than the last effort when I was still a vegetarian. I have used the last month to adapt to my new carnivorous status. I have stopped using protein shakes and protein bars. The problem is I sometimes forget to eat meat as after most of my adult life as a vege meat just isn't on my menu. I am a fairly good cook but don't know how to cook meat in a tasty way. I have put on a lot of weight, about 6kg, as I have just not been disciplined. Today is a new beginning I don't believe I am carb resistant. My blood sauger was measured at 4.2 quite recently and even overweight I am only 80kg at 181cm in height. My plan is to limit carbs to around 100g per day. Breakfast was 2 eggs on spinach with feta cheese and coffee. Snack is dried wors, an apple and a banana. 2 carrots, cucumber and celery, some nuts. Lunch is chicken livers with a very small amount of brown rice. Supper will be a salad with a vegetable juice. Combines with this I am back on the bike trainer this evening for an hour. Just going easy. I am combining the diet change with a block of base training. Even on my old diet I never found it difficult to ride 2 or 3 hours with just a small energy drink and water. Don't think I should suffer too much. My aims for riding are to get back on my old pace from 2 years back when I did a 94.7 in a time of 2:45. I am recently separated from my wife so what with the diet changes lots of stuff is now new. Not so easy at 53
