  2. Not all bikes that are advertised are available, so the shopping list might be reduced before you even start... (thereby making choices easier ?)
  3. 19-year-old third category rider positive for 12 substances - banned for three years Cyclingnews.com
  4. Perhaps have a look @ Arch EX rims? http://www.notubes.com/Arch-EX-Rims-C119.aspx
  5. There is no really accurate answer, but it would depend on what bike you are riding (full suss or hard tail) and what sort of riding and terrain you do. Perhaps a good compromise is a Crest front and Arch rear. But without a good wheel builder, you are wasting your time anyway... (The ZTR Crest wheelset has an 85kg weight limit, while the Arch has a 105kg weight limit) http://www.notubes.com/ZTR-Crest-29er-Stock-Wheelset-P452C31.aspx
  6. It's scary to hear these stories so often. Argus season is gonna bring more. So sad. RIp little guy. Condolences to the family.

  9. Don’t Be A Half Wheel Harry One of the most annoying things about riding with someone new to the sport is the “Half Wheeler”. Many probably don’t know they are doing it or understand why it’s annoying so here’s the low down. Half wheeling is when you ride half a wheel or more ahead of the person you are cycling with… Half wheeling is an annoying cycling fau pax that should be avoided at all cost, half wheeling you riding partner is like saying, “your rubbish and I’m putting my front wheel ahead of your to remind you of that”… Sure some days your going to feel like a million bucks but resist the urge to kick it up a notch, the guy riding beside you might not have just downed a Red Bull or may have done almost double the amount of km’s you have. Don’t be a “Half wheel Harry” your buddies and strangers alike will thank you for it.
  10. @ SFDT: I hope your mate isnt too bashed up and is back on the bike quickly.
  11. A mate of mine got taken out this morning in Wynberg. Luckily no injuries to him or his bike. I think the biggest damage was to the inside of his shorts, but the washing machine will sort that out... The nice lady drove up next to him and turned left. Nice move!
  12. From PPA Website: Cycling SA license fees: PPA has absorbed the annual CSA membership license (R75) on behalf of its members. Members only need to pay CSA if they wish to upgrade to a full racing license, which needs to be done through your cycling club. Note that cyclists who are not a member of an Association like PPA or do not hold a Cycling South Africa racing license, need to take out an additional R35 CSA day license for every timed event attended.
  13. 1. Get your ride off to a good start by complimenting your partner on how great and thin she looks in her spandex. This will go a long way before you’ve even left the house. Caution: Make absolutely certain your compliment sounds genuine otherwise it could have the opposite effect i.e, your partner accuses you of lying or making fun of her and your ride is over before it started. 2. NEVER half-wheel your partner (this will cause unneeded tension and likely lead to an argument). 3. On that same note, REFRAIN from commenting on how nice it is to just “spin it out” and ride at a slow pace. Trust me, she is most likely riding as fast as she possibly can in order to keep up with your “recovery” ride. 4. REFRAIN from talking about ANYTHING bike related. Preferred topics include gossiping about various people, deciding what to do with the rest of your day, life planning etc. 5. REFRAIN from breaking in conversation with your partner by waving and chatting to every single cyclist you pass on the road. Yes, you may know them and even be friends but they will understand your lack of social grace when they spot your partner (unless of course you’re half-wheeling her at this point and they think you’re riding alone). Pretending you don’t see them is even accepted and understood. 6. DO, push your partner up any big hills if she appears to be tiring. Caution: ASK before doing this or your gesture (albeit well intended) could lead to an argument….after-all we are quite capable of riding up a hill….or so the argument might go. 7. DO, buy the coffee when you stop for a break. 8. DO, offer to carry as many of your partners bike-related belongings (tools, pumps etc.) as possible. Her comfort is your happiness. 9. REFRAIN from offering tips on her technique unless your advice is explicitly solicited. Unwanted advice can lead to retaliation criticism of your own biking style…which always has the possibility of leading to criticism about you in general! Best to keep all comments to compliments and encouraging remarks. 10. Finally, remember that your bike is likely three times the cost of her bike and therefore three times as efficient. At least that’s my theory and justification when trying to keep up! From cyclingtipsblog

  15. Is that why I just received my CSA membership card via email? I didn't intentionally apply for CSA membership anywhere... Another weird thing is that next to 'Club' on the card, it says '-Not Listed-'
  16. Wicked machine! But why aren't you riding your own Black Spade? I regularly see one here in Cape Town. It looks fantastic!

  22. 'many people don't realise that it is the legal right for a cyclist to ride two abreast' indeed!
  23. He went down it the crash near the end and trashed his bike. (We probably wont be seeing him on the podium any time soon as he is now the leadout and not sprinter)
  24. Here is a bit more to the story: It comes just days after Warne infuriated bike riders with a series of tweets calling for cyclists to face a ban if they don't ride single file. Professional triathlete and six time Ironman champion Luke McKenzie accused the cricketer of inciting cyclist hatred. Amy Gillett Foundation spokesman David Lee said it was disappointing to see Warne using his profile to inflame tensions between cyclists and drivers. "Each road user group has a requirement to respect the rights of the other and inflaming the situation whether you are a cyclist or a driver, it doesn't help the issue," he said. "We'd be really keen to get in touch with Shane through his management to try and help educate him a little further. "His comments about riding single file for instance, many people don't realise that it is the legal right for a cyclist to ride two abreast.'' Bicycle Network Victoria spokesperson Jason den Hollander said that Warne should be aware of the road rules, and obey them like all other road users. "As a long time resident of Bayside, he should know the rules. We've been disappointed to see his recent calls for cyclists to ride in single file, as that isn't the law or the safest option,'' Mr den Hollander said. While Mr den Hollander refused to comment on Warne's latest brush with a cyclist without knowing the specifics of the incident, he said he was disappointed with Warne's overall attitude to cyclists. "We would expect all cyclists to be good ambassadors for cycling, just as Shane has been for cricket. We hope he could also apply that to other aspects of his public life,'' he said. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/more-news/warne-blasts-cyclists-on-twitter/story-fn7x8me2-1226246735306
