Umm... Killer wheels look so much nicer than a powermeter! Duh! Better wheels 'make you go faster' with no extra effort. If you buy a powermeter, you actually have to do some real training...

You make it sound a lot more complicated than it really is...

Get your sit bones measured and buy a saddle that is the right width for your ass. One man's favourite saddle is anothe man's torture device. Some shops have test saddles (I have seen Fizik, San Marco and Specialized). Its an expensive trial and error process otherwise.

I think he is prone to riding into trees/rocks etc. There is no way that all of this damage is from Just Riding Along... I would love to hear what the bike shop, Dragons and Giant themselves say...

I used the sevice that Cyclelab set up. You drop your bike off, they box and truck it to Underberg. You collect it at the registration and put it back together again. Then you box it again at the school @ the finish. They truck it back to Cape Town and then you have options: You collect your boxed bike or they unbox it or unbox, clean and service it. Edit: The only drawback was that you had to drop it off quite far in advance and it took quite a while to get it back again.

Measuring the circumference of your tyre at correct pressure ist he most accurate. Sit on the bike and get someone to make the marks for you. And dont assume that the advertised distance of a mtb race is accurate...
