  1. That's the route I was planning. Some nice, undulating climbs once you're on the Karkloof road. Pity you're overseas at the moment as I know you were keen to join us this year. https://www.strava.com/routes/12859430
  2. Might be an idea. I hate that Cedara road that crosses the freeway into Merrivale. The cars hum along there.
  3. For anyone in the KZN area, Jess and I are planning to do a 65km slow run from Hilton to Karkloof and back tomorrow morning. If anyone's keen to join us for all or part of the run, drop me a DM.
  4. Normal short sleeve running shirt with cycling arm warmers. I find a base layer eventually gets too hot whereas the arm warmers keep me warm at the beginning but the breathable shirt keeps me cool later in the run. Also a buff. Starts out over my face our ears at the beginning, moves to the neck later, and then eventually on to my wrist as a handy sweat band/hanky when I start getting hot.
  5. A bit late in the race now but still top runners coming in… live stream of the marathon (just set your VPN to a European country, I'm using France): https://www.olympicchannel.com/en/
  6. Geez, well done to both of you. To both have rough days out like that and still soldier through shows tons of guts. And well done for bus driving a novice, Hacc! It sounds like a dramatic race, I really need to do it one year.
  7. Siyaan, I'm so impressed with how you ran that race. That was the textbook way to conquer an ultra, especially for someone that decided to skip the whole fuss of marathons and dive right in Congratulations. And to get to the end of that and not even feel tired shows that you did all your prep right. Well done on your first and, hopefully, not your last anymore.
  8. And talking of triathletes, I ran the Walter Sisulu over the weekend. There were two incredibly strong women ahead of me the whole way that absolutely smoked me up the hills. I generally treated the steep climbs as not worth running since I figured the marginal time gained wasn't worth the energy loss. This didn't stop the two women, though, who flew up them like Ibex. When I got to the end I introduced myself to one of the runners that thrashed me and she said her name was Kate Roberts. That's when the penny dropped. She was one of the triathletes at the Olympics or Commonwealth games in the mixed relay triathlon (that was such an entertaining race to watch). Lordy, she and Marianne Botes are brilliant runners. I've always felt I was pretty strong on the hills but geez I was shown how to do it properly on Sunday.
  9. If you're taking it as an LSD you'll be absolutely fine over the extra 14km. Sore but fine. You triathletes tend to cope with discomfort pretty well in any case.
  10. Ja, she's keeping the intensity low and the mileage high for the next month before she reintroduces speedwork and it seems to really be suiting her. She definitely thrives off more mileage than me. I'm going to have to get my butt into gear if I want to hang onto her at Comrades.
  11. Except you didn't tamper with GPS files in order to win ????
  12. Good luck with the run, I've always been keen to do that marathon. How's your weather looking for the weekend? I believe you guys have been getting good rain in the midlands as well? I'm doing my first trail run for the year on Sunday, the Walter Sisulu 20km. By the looks of things, it should be a good, fun mudfest.
  13. I'm also looking for a pair. I don't really use headphones for running except occasionally when I have to do a tempo or something and I'm really just not in the mood. At all. After reading a full MTN data bundle worth of reviews, I've narrowed my choices down to 3: The Jabra Elite Sport, Jaybird Run and Bose Soundsport Free. They're all sweat proof, have good battery life (including recharging cases) and great sound quality (same frequency range on all) with strong bass. And they all integrate with Siri or the Android equivalent. I like the idea of the Bose for running as it doesn't isolate noise yet still delivers strong sound, which makes it a good option for the car as well. Jaybird is also highly regarded for its sound quality. But based on general quality, connectivity strength and value for money, I'm probably going to go with the Jabra. If I were to go with a Bluetooth wired option, I'd definitely look at the Jaybird X3. Under R2k on Takealot and I've read great reviews on them (plus nearly 8 hours battery life is nothing to sniff at.) I do fortunately have a brother in law in Dubai who's a pilot so gadgets work out a lot cheaper than locally.
  14. My in laws have an air bnb in Hilton if that suits you. We could always car pool to the start and back from the finish.
  15. That's her. Honestly, I can't keep up with her mileage. She murdered my poor legs with the hill session last week.
  16. Plus 1 for this. My wife was injured for four weeks of her marathon training and replaced it with swimming. She ended up running a PB by five minutes.
  17. It must be such a thrill running with the elite ladies like that. I had that for a short while when I managed to get onto Yolande McClean's heels at the Zwartkops 10km last year. Then I heard her telling her running partner that she wasn't feeling too fit so wasn't pushing that hard. And then, with me redlining, she turned off onto the 21km course
  18. And here I was thinking it was impossible to love that nutcase more than I already do ????
  19. Guilty. Parkrun for a while, then a Nike 10km then "I bet I could run a half marathon one day but I definitely don't ever, ever want to go any further than that. It doesn't look like fun."
  20. Yeah, I think regardless of the distance you ran, they really have an obligation to take them back and then make it the NB rep's issue. Either that or contact NB directly. Good luck.
  21. Ey, not nice to get a new shoe on the feet and have a terrible time with it. You should be able to take it back to the store, though. Even if you've done a few km in it. I know Sweatshop, for example, have a 2 week no-questions-asked policy and I've had no trouble with a few other stores when it comes to returning a shoe. It's just not worth it if you're going to dread putting it on for a run. That said, have you tried different lacing techniques? My Adidas Supernovas caused the exact issue you described. I laced them to the point that they didn't even cover the lower outside of my foot. I also cut the tongue out, removed all the foam and unnecessary padding then took it to a cobbler to sew back in. It was a definite improvement after that. Don't be afraid to hack a shoe to fit your needs.
  22. You're probably 100% correct. Unfortunately I'm a runner, which means I'm going to ignore all sense, logic, reason and experience in favour of a panicked Comrades training season where I'm desperately trying to run all the kilometres without getting any of the injuries before finally realising that I've made all the same mistakes again. Apparently runners never make the same mistake more than 5 times so I should be good by 2022.
  23. I skipped ODD this year and decided to do Arthur Cresswell in the first week of April. Then I realised I need an extra ultra in my Comrades training schedule and this weekend is the only reasonable time for it. I'm going to do the dreaded solo ultra training run on Sunday (hint hint if anyone else wants to join me). My brain is already trying to convince me that 43km technically qualifies as an ultra.
  24. I imagine the NB uses a blown rubber sole, which would provide more cushioning and better grip but at the expense of wear. It's a bit of a trade-off. My Adidas Bostons use a very thin layer of Conti rubber, which looks hardly worn after 1000km (though the Boost foam is a bit suspect by then). But as soon as the road gets wet they have zero traction. My Saucony Rides on the other hand use a deep lugged, blown rubber sole, which sticks to anything but wore out on the last pair by 700km.
