  1. Jeepers, Muds, get that tapeworm checked out! I'm 1.79m and after Christmas I'm probably around 75kg again If you're sitting at that weight naturally then nothing wrong, I think. The premise was probably meant for people that are trying to out-train the Comrades and calorie count their way to the start line.
  2. So I've started my 2018 off with two new presents for myself. My first pair of trail shoes (Asics Gecko XT - picked them up for R1599 at Randburg Runner) and a hint of ITB. Meaning I can't test my first pair of trail shoes. Was hoping to do Varsity Kudus this weekend but I think I'm going to err on the side of caution and spend the week stretching it out instead. Anybody else planning on the 15km this weekend? And for Mudsimus, there's a great saying about Comrades which probably applies to marathons somewhat. Rather arrive at the start line overweight and undertrained than underweight and overtrained. In other words, err on the side of rest and too much tapering than arriving with low energy and dead legs.
  3. Looks like you do some hard work from km 2 to km 4. Elevation gain is relatively similar to Alberts but it does look like a tough course. I'll give it a try in the new year ???? Golden Harvest: Alberts Farm:
  4. I've racked up a little over 50 now and I still really enjoy them. They're great as a fitness test or to sharpen some racing skills but can also be a brilliant way to break up a long run or just include a tempo session in the middle of a run. What's the Golden Harvest course like? I started at Delta until it got overcrowded and now I tend to run Alberts Farm, which is the most enjoyable and varied course I've run on so far.
  5. Nice work. I need to track you down on Strava and start following you to steal some of your training techniques. And yeah, it's all in good spirit. Whenever I lose a CR I log on and give the runner kudos. Partly to let him know I coming back for my crown ???? I've also used them as a sort of Fartlek workout. Plot out a route that covers about five or six segments, run recovery pace to each one and then give it a full go. Good fun.
  6. Meh, they're still fun and great motivation. There's a guy who took a CR on 6th street from me. In trying to get that crown back, I've taken 8 seconds off my original time. He's still ahead of me but it's a nice little carrot.
  7. Haha, as someone once told me… think of the fastest person you know. They know somebody faster.
  8. Yeah, I also feel like I need to get my 400m repeat times down to sub 3/km next year if I'm going to really improve my marathon times. It's fine for a single, flat-out sprint, but as you point out the result is heaving and farting and gnashing of teeth at the end rather than a gentle jog before starting the next repeat.
  9. Aye, there's one for each direction on 6th and on 7th. They're proper lung busters but great incentive for those 400m repeats. I still haven't managed to dethrone the two guys that hold them on 6th. I need to ask Wayde to wear my watch.
  10. Are you talking about the 400m 6th street repeat segment or the tough hill from Tana road up to 6th Street? My main challenge has been to avoid running directly across a street so I've had to plot a course that allows runners to either stay on their side of the road or cross the road diagonally whilst running between two streets (so that they can time it for a break in traffic rather than sprinting straight across the road).
  11. Any of you guys in the Northcliff, Linden, Victory Park, Blairegowrie area? I'm starting a low key 5km "time trial" on Thursday mornings that begins and ends, conveniently, at Yield coffee shop. Going to do the first one this Thursday (quite likely I'll be the only one that pitches, but you've got to start somewhere, right?) and Marelize, the owner, has promised discounts for any runners. Start at 6:15am, timer will be displayed in the window and you just write your name and time in the book as you finish. I might move the run to a Tuesday morning if that proves more popular.
  12. Ja, on the back of that performance Gerda might have to displace Ann in my predictions. I'm still going to keep Ann in my top 3 as a bit of a dark horse. Although she doesn't have the out and out pace of people like Gerda, I think she's got the mental focus and grit to run a podium if that's what she's chasing. Like this year, my big regret about running the Comrades will be the fact that I'm unable to watch the race itself.
  13. Ja, Ann had a hammy strain within the first couple of Kays and pulled out at this year's event. To her credit she immediately joined her club's seconding tents to help out on the route. I think she would have been on for a top 10 but I reckon her ambitions are even higher for next year and she's got some serious focus. Looking at the times and paces she's posting and her strength over the ultras, I think she's got a good shot at a podium. Gerda's form and her speed are phenomenal. I'll look out for Danette as well then, I don't know much about her but I'll keep an eye open.
  14. My top 3 for 2018: 1) Camille Herron 2) Anne Ashworth 3) Gerda Steyn
  15. I think our bodies all earned a decent break after that route. Personally I've taken three weeks off running to let the body recover and fix anything it needs to before I begin again at the end of November with, hopefully, a fresh set of legs for Comrades training.
  16. Haha, just saw this now. Young, blonde girl with the pink Irene colours? We drove to the start together, that was her first go at a marathon and she clocked about a 3:26. She's got some good running heritage, though. Her dad has a Comrades PB of around 6:15.
  17. If I manage a time like that next year, I'm retiring! That's a great run, Lexx.
  18. Yeah, mine was splitting the workout into three different categories and only awarding points for steps taken. However, on the last day of the week it suddenly tallied all points. Don't know what's up.
  19. I'm sorry about that, man. Well done on getting through to 24km despite the blisters. Do you think socks could have been an issue there?
  20. During the monotonous parts of most long runs my brain decides to run through a highlights package of all the cringe-worthy things I've done in my life. Either that or it will play the chorus from Moana/Frozen/Jungle Book on constant repeat. Thanks, Brain, you're a real pal.
  21. I do remember how anxious I was before my first marathon, researching every single web page, trying to remember the calorie per hour totals, replenishment rates, etc. But I've since learnt that, at our level, it's not rocket science. Eat your usual breakfast and once you're running, take water at regular intervals and consume a little bit of whatever you're familiar with every 10 kays or so. Don't let the stress of all the calorie counting get in the way of the run. We've all got plenty of time and money to waste further down the line experimenting with techniques, food and kit to try and shave minutes off our PBs. That probably accounts for half the hobby in the months between races.
  22. Well if you're the Travis I saw on the timesheet you earned that shuffle with that blitz of yours
  23. Well, to be blunt, stomach cramps that lead to dodgy farts that, unchecked, lead to slight follow throughs that, if totally ignored, eventually lead to industrial volume bush turds.
  24. Agreed. The day after Comrades this year I was walking around absolutely fine, some stiffness but no pain. After Kaapsehoop I still can't manage the stairs without stopping on each one. I think I'm going to have to rent some property on the Westcliff Stairs in preparation for next year's Comrades.
  25. I only ask because I often battle with my stomach on really long runs so was wondering if that was the reason you were using it. It's not too bad during speed sessions but geez it can get bad on the longer, slower efforts. I've long had a sneaking suspicion that milk could be to blame (also battle with eczema now and then) but I love the stuff too much.
