  1. here's the map from last year: http://www.sports-tracker.com/#/workout/NiklasVonMaltzahn/3rge71vu9b7fktma
  2. i'm back in joburg again. Does anyone know if the group still rides from BP on a weekends at 6am?
  3. i think my best achievement is competing in 19 races this year and intervarsity tour. I wish there was time to rest but the summer season starts in 1 month!
  4. my stats for yesterday's ride: 86.418km 3:19:52 25.943km/h average Calories: 3730 Ave HR: 154 Ave windspeed: #*&^#*(&$ GPS track of the ride: http://www.sports-tracker.com/#/workout/NiklasVonMaltzahn/bvhj7i3eibha2qke I went for a ride today from Blouberg to Muizenberg and the wind was still quite bad but better than yesterday. Was great to meet everyone and will definitely be at the next ride.
  5. I deflate my tyres and go through them with a tweezer pulling out any glass or dirt out any holes. I also glue any holes, then pump the tubes to 8 bar. Lastly give the chain a lube. Make my drinks, pack food and my cycling bag the night before.
  6. so you're actually starting to look after your bike! that guy at the bike shop must have been quite convincing. although you might want to try some normal lube.
  7. i've used my nokia gps on about 5000km of riding and some running/hiking. I've crashed with it, ridden in the rain, etc. I ride with it in a waterproof bag in my back pocket. It provides such a lot of information for the fraction of a cost I'd have to spend on a special cycling gps. I still have my speedometer and HR monitor on my handlebars. Afterwards i don't really use nokia's sports tracker website but I can use the GPX file in any application for instance I use SportTracks which gives me elevation, gradient, time splits, etc. All the technology is there now, its just the device software that needs to be improved a bit more.
  8. i think one of the biggest confusions is calling it the adjusted winners time. Its seriously just the intercept term calculated in the linear regression between the one tonner times and the most recent argus times. there's no real reasoning behind it
  9. Hey. Do any of you know of a good sports nutritionist in Cape Town, Southern suburbs area. I've had enough of trying different diets, supplements, etc and want to rather speak to a professional. Thanks
  10. this year your team support vehicle is allowed to follow you so you'll be able to plan your nutrition a lot better.
  11. i only get it because of the discovery discount but even that is starting to look a bit too expensive.
  12. being statistically minded i have played around a lot with race data and something that is surprising in the west coast express results: Based on everyone's times, everyone should be reseeded 3 groups up. this is gonna result in masses of people riding in groups D-F say for instance with no one riding in the later groups. i've found in all the races that i ride with the same bunch of people usually. as soon as there's a race which favours seeding, we all get moved up into the next group. nothing changes except your number. the seeding model at least is a reasonable approximation to everyone's ability but no statistical model is ever going to be able to represent data fully.
  13. exactly and the variance of the league race times is heavily biased towards the racing category riders meaning an even more distorted seeding calculation.
  14. here's an idea: think about it, your seeding decides which group you are riding in. if you are faster than your group, you should be moved up. the onus though is on the stronger guys in a group to ensure they drop the rest of the wheelsuckers. they could maybe adjust the seeding for each group so that the average time falls in the middle of the seeding index. then if your "time" falls ahead of the expected group then you should be moved up. the biggest problem with the model is the fact that it assumes our race times to be normally distributed when they are clearly skewed
  15. same things happened to me but as soon as you get to start riding in groups F-H you get stuck as those groups can never close the gap between the group time and the winners time. i used to ride in group G as we consistently did better times than F. in the simonsvlei race we even overtook the F and E bunches and finished the race with the D's. This still only gave me a seeding index equivalent to an F. the best advice to beat the seeding system is train hard for the summer season and make sure you are light and fast on the climbs, then you can ride away from your group and the other wheelsuckers and hopefully gain some time on the winner.
  16. me too...... with a little extra help from the west coast express
  17. the adjusted winner's time is just an element of the seeding calculation, it is adjusted consistently using the same algorithm so everyone is affected equally.
  18. i'm keen to do this ride. Skoffels let me know when you want to do it.
  19. Wow great photos! Thanks
  20. have a look here: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/south-africa/-/806128773973231103
  21. You could try outsurance. I've got 2 bikes insured with them to the value of R16000 for R120 per month. I've claimed twice before and never had problems. They cover everything.
  22. some of the old maps of tokai had directions on for each single track.
  23. Another tip: measure your resting heart rate every day. if its more than 10 beats above your average, don't train on that day. It could be you are overtrained (thus more susceptible to getting sick) or your immune system is vulnerable. Often your body just needs rest.
  24. I'm taking it easy this weekend. Leaving for University Student cycling champs in Bloemfontein on monday morning so it will just be recovery rides.
  25. looks like i should up my daily intake and eat more meals in a day. I have to do intervals and strength training for the racing season. Thanks for the advice guys
