  1. is that the Nokia specific one or a polar?
  2. do you know how much they generally go for?
  3. I've got a Nokia 6710 Navigator. Does anyone have the bluetooth heart rate monitor or know where one can get one?
  4. I usually get a signal quite quickly but the data is less reliable when mountain biking when theres a lot of trees around. Also altitude data from satellites isn't always reliable so I use an altitude correction tool in SportTracks to smooth out my data.
  5. I use nokia sports tracker and then export the file to *.gpx. I then import this into a free software called SportTracks which gives you everything you need. It gives you your total ascent, calories, weather, can even estimate power output.
  6. Link Mountain Mugging Alert Jul 20, 2010 (Cape Argus/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- A safety action group has declared parts of Table Mountain "no-go zones" after muggers, brandishing broken bottles and knives, attacked hikers and residents in at least 10 incidents since May. The Table Mountain Safety Action Group (TMSAG) said areas such as Sandy Bay and King's Blockhouse near Devil's Peak were dangerous for cyclists, hikers and residents walking their dogs along the trails. The group, formed in 2007 after a spate of attacks on Table Mountain, warned people to be on the look out for "scruffily dressed" men who work in teams of two or three. TMSAG spokesperson Andre van Schalkwyk said there had been an increase in incidents since February, when two attacks occurred at Signal Hill within three days of each other. Rondebosch police have confirmed only two robberies, both of which happened on July 4. In both incidents, residents had been walking alone near Rhodes Memorial just before 6pm. Police spokesperson Captain Angie Latchman said: "They were confronted by two unknown males who held them up at knifepoint and stole their clothing and cash." The suspects, described as dark in complexion and small in build, fled the scene on foot with their loot. The TMSAG said that since then other incidents had been reported at Newlands Forest, Kirstenbosch (Skeleton Gorge), Devil's Peak, Vlakkenberg (above Hout Bay), Sandy Bay and the King's Blockhouse above Rhodes Memorial on Devil's Peak. Van Schalkwyk said he had contacted the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) with his concerns but no action had, as yet, been taken. Paddy Gordon, manager of the TMNP, said about 50 visitor safety rangers patrolled the entire park and that plans were in the pipeline to address the issue. "We are obviously concerned and will react and respond as soon as possible," said Gordon. "We also regret these incidents." He said discussions were to be held on redirecting resources to deal with safety problems. "During the World Cup we concentrated heavily on the Signal Hill, Cape Point and Boulder's Bay area as we had a high influx of people there," he explained. Police have warned residents to avoid walking or riding alone in the affected areas of Table Mountain. The TMSAG has noted the following incidents since February, although police could not confirm these: Signal Hill, February: An American man was robbed and apparently injured with a pair of scissors on Sunday, February 14. And three students studying English at a local language school were robbed on Tuesday, February 16, when three men stepped out from behind a tree and threatened to kill them unless they handed over their belongings. Money, cellphones, cameras and watches were stolen. Newlands Forest, early May: Two men brandishing broken bottles threatened a group of people in Newlands Forest. Rhodes Memorial (upper contour path area), May 12: Three men attacked a woman. Kirstenbosch (Skeleton Gorge), May 12: Three men armed with knives robbed a group of hikers. Equipment and a cellphone were taken. Devil's Peak, May 29: Four men came up from the Newlands Forest side and threatened hikers with knives. Cameras and backpacks were taken. Vlakkenberg (above Hout Bay), June 18: Four women hiking near Hout Bay were robbed by three men armed with pangas and knives. They were tied up and their boots, jackets, rucksacks and other equipment and valuables were taken. Sandy Bay, June 20: Two men armed with knives attacked a German woman and an Italian man who were walking on the beach. Cellphones, a camera, shoes and R1 000 was taken. King's Blockhouse. July 4: Two "scruffy-looking" men armed with knives made off with a cellphone, a camera and a jacket. Rondebosch police recorded a similar incident on the same day when a resident was robbed by two men while walking in the area. Sandy Bay, July 7: Two men armed with pangas robbed seven men of their bags, cellphones and wallets. ________________________________________ It seems like safety in numbers doesn't even help anymore. Funny enough I was up at the blockhouse yesterday around midday and met a police patrol vehicle. They said that they patrol everyday as long as its not raining. I also saw 2 ranger vehicles. I also saw that a contractor has been fixing up the jeep tracks so there's a lot of activity during the day so its probably a bit safer. Does anyone know how to find out more about this Table Mountain Safety Action Group?
  7. Got the bike back after fork was sent away. Its fixed now but the manufacturer didn't give a reason. At least its working again.
  8. how do you get there?
  9. I agree, just having a bicycle is already barely affordable.
  10. I spent about an hour yesterday with a toothbrush, some paraffin solution, soapy water and lube washing it. The derailleur looks brand new again but still gets stuck. I'll try get a pic up.
  11. the cable and cable housing were replaced recently. I don't think they are the problem. The cable moves fine, its the actual derailleur that does not move into place. You need to give it an extra push to get it to the right position. I think it might be that the rivets are worn.
  12. Hey I've been having problems with the front derailleur on my road bike. It doesn't want to shift down at certain times, mainly during or just after riding in wet weather. I am able to push it manually with my hand to the right position but this is not optimal for riding. As far as I know when you shift down the cable relaxes so its the mechanism which moves the FD back to its default position that is struggling Seeing that it works fine when its dry, could it be water or dirt that gets in? What's the best way to clean or lubricate the mechanism?
  13. I've also ridden the jeep tracks on Table Mountain extensively. Its a great ride for people living close by. Afternoons and weekends there are usually many people riding up to the blockhouse as well as hikers. I think that robbers mostly target tourists, namely cellphones, money and jewelery. I don't think some of them would be capable to cycle on some of those roads without crashing the bike. Apparently there are certain hotspots where a lot of muggings have taken place but thats also more on the trails that go right to the top of the mountain.
  14. Larger events are usually very well attended. Many of those taking part only ride their bikes 2-3 times per year. For them paying around R200 for a race entry is very reasonable. What I'd like to know is with these larger events, why do they have to be more expensive than the typical weekend ones. Surely if they reach a certain number of entries they've covered all overhead costs? There's also some weekend events that have an attendance of over 1000 people whilst others have 200 and the prices are the same.
  15. as a full-time student addicted to cycling, it does get very expensive at the end of the day. After working and saving I've managed to buy myself both a road and mtb but when it comes to maintenance and other equipment it gets tough. I've really enjoyed the racing but its becoming very expensive, especially the bigger ones. I can only imagine what it must be like when your whole family is hooked... I'm also having to now select which races I like the most and only attend those.
  16. Same goes for some road events. I have to fork out R170 for Die Burger road race if I want to take part
  17. they've played these ads in Cape Town quite a few times over the last couple of months.
  18. ok so I took the bike in yesterday and the technicians said they've never seen a fork do this before. They're sending it back to the factory. The fork does come standard on many bikes so hopefully it was just a once off problem
  19. thanks for the advice. has anyone else got experience with this fork?
  20. Suntour XCR-LO I know it doesn't make any sense, the only thing i can think of is that its the different force that act on it when you brake to when you use it normally.
  21. Hi I got a new Giant Terrago mtb about 3 months ago. I've done about 700km on it and taken it through all different terrains, mud, rain, etc. Yesterday on a rainy ride my fork locked out and would not compress anymore. Th funny thing though is when I brake the shock compresses quite easily, just not when going over bumps or when I put weight on it. Lets just say the ride was a lot rougher than usual. Does anyone have an idea on what could cause this? Is it possible for the locking mechanism to fail? Or can this happen if dirt or water gets in? Thanks in advance.
  22. I've always rode along Koeberg road towards town, then as you get to the interchange which leads onto the M5, keep left and go into Maitland, then turn right onto Voortrekker road and you get to the circle in Woodstuck. From there its not far to Observatory. To return to Koeberg road you follow the same roads back.
  23. i've got a Thule Freeway which carries 3 bikes and straps onto the boot of the car
  24. those spinning bike are useful when its raining outside and you can set up a good program based on your HR and cadence.
  25. has anyone got a map or gps track of the routes?
