  1. Yup! All the time... Also see my username fixed to the wrong thread when I've posted.
  2. Mmmm. Just had a look and it's a bit obscure re where you can cross busy intersections and such like. Which is why a good map would be nice. Think I'll try your commute in reverse... Or some of it anyway. going to do a bit of exploring. Any ideas on Woodstock?? Is Albert Rd ok? Or is it better to use the Milnerton approach to city centre?
  3. Thanks! Will try the century city route... along with the gmaps 'walk' option. Found it difficult before to 'break out' of Pinelands area,
  4. This is an awesome thread! Keep the inspiration coming... I almost feel like moving back to CT just so's I can commute! Used to take a 'detour' from my house which is a ten minute ride from work so that I got decent MTB ride in... Nothing better than seeing a crowned eagle display on a crisp autumn morning, never mind buzzards, long-cresteds etc. Stopped that when I started working at home & going to the gym instead... Think I need to resuscitate my 'commute' instead! Just not sure what my other half's going to say when I announce I'm off to work and head out the door... Started reading this thread cos I'm looking for info on cycle-friendly routes in CT (Pinelands, SSuburbs, town kind of thing). Anybody know of a map/ website? Saw something from Ride your city but I seem to remember there's an interactive website somewhere??? What's the best way to work out routes, besides google maps? I'm tempted to explore the IRT route but need to link out of Pinelands. Advice appreciated!
  5. Sure, that works very well for vehicles approaching, but it's the ones BEHIND that bother me... It's better if traffic is stopped so you move to be 1st off at the intersection. I put myself as far ahead of the next car as I can. But if you approach from the left in moving traffic & try move right into 'your' (ha) lane, it's metal-mash time... And there's no way you're going to be able to hold the lane unless cars are moving really slow & even then someone will want to park on you. Don't get me wrong, I do go through right turn intersections but it seems to be getting more dicey. Or am I just getting old????
  6. Ah HEM. now, was it not possible the guy wanted to turn right? Or was he stuffing around in front of the bus?? If I ever do get to cycle round the world, I'll only be able to go west(ish) from here until I get to France...mmmm, but that supposesone skips Africa, mostly. How do the rest of you handle right turns at busy intersections (no redheads or manboobs please)??
  7. But what is it with people?? Whenever an issue is raised (like cyclists' safety) someone has to throw a punch back? I am so sick of that 'it's your own fault' & 'you deserve this' (basically you're vermin attitude)... Here's a response to a Daily Dispatch online article about cyclists needing to protect themselves from attack... Wait for it, you guessed... Your comments Rob [11 February 2012 10:40] "Cyclists and runners are starting to become as much of a danger to motorists. I've had situations where both 5am groups in particular occupy the entire width of a lane including one way roads coming straight at you and not moving aside and it has always amazed me how they can't hear a diesel engine behind them. And just because Robots are RED doesn't make it tight to jump them either. If scooter can stop and wait then so can you." HOW ARE CYCLISTS AND RUNNERS A DANGER TO MOTORISTS?????????? But this is how people think, if you can call it that.
  8. And thanks for sharing... It's encouraging to see how much of a difference dropping the weight makes!
  9. Some clever people apparently worked out that for every kg of body weight lost, you have a 1.25% advantage on your climbing times - so losing 5kg makes you almost a minute faster on a climb you took 15min to do before, using the same effort (power)... But that's for road altho I wonder why MTB should differ?
  10. And this means what??? Munney? Don't make me larf. I know I'm in the butt-end of the world, but have you seen what happens at schools with 'recognised' sports codes?? When you start with language like 'codes' then you know what you've got. Good luck to us all.
  11. Fry's vegetarian sausages...
  12. And there I thought I was having a bad time with punctures! Was just wondering on my way home after fixing ANOTHER one why they happen to me at this time of year. But no, not close to yours (yet!). However, last weekend it was the back tyre that decided to make like a python that ate a rat. I think something in the casing lost hold of itself so there is a serious kink in the whole thing...
  13. Same here. Will be plenty of fast ones coming past if you want to catch a train. Especially on the Blue Route. Enjoy - there's nothing like finishing the first (well, nothing much...??) See you in PB!
  14. Not. Meant their site is having difficulties with traffic, that's all. Some people use it to check their start times & others to see what kind of group they've been seeded in. I suppose 'query' is ambiguous.
  15. I think Racetec can't handle 30'000 queries at the same time! About Us | Services | Contact | FAQs Sorry, an error has occured and the webmaster has been notified. Home | Buy a Chip | Calendar | Results | Entered Events | Update My Details
  16. Same thing happened to a friend of mine... From XX to O something. Starting an hour later than last year. Not cool. But I also noticed from the batch times how MANY people come in between 4hrs and 5-5 and a half... Glad I just ride my bike and don't have to organize this thing. Hope you get somewhere with your query. Let us know!
  17. Join PPA. groups PA to PF get to go from +- 9.15 on. I got booted out of PA cos of the new seeding system (only done 1 Argus) but PB's ok. Possibly faster too... Going to chase my own tail (last year's time) big time!! If you want a better start time next year, either join PPA or, but better, do a seeding race. It seems the new seeding system gives preference to those who do more races (especially ACT) but why that should make them better riders than us 'newbies' who live far and wide away from the seeded races I'm not sure, judging by what I've seen of cycling skills at ACT so far... No worries, the bug has me and thus a Burger or such on the plate this year :-)
  18. Lori, how long have you been riding road? (and how much do you ride??) I got an 8 speed double (front chainring/ crank) 2 years ago and still find hills a challenge but have got SO much stronger. And am getting faster. Just stick to it and ride hills more often. Do a little more than what you feel is comfortable. They don't have to be long but try to do a few hilly rides, at least once a week. I wouldn't swop out for a triple chain ring (on the crank) cos you need to get stronger to get faster... that's why you ride road!! Try doing one long ride a week (+-2hrs) one fast ride and one hills... and keep it 'honest', don't coast the easy bits. Also, make sure you are using your gears so that you spin faster more comfortably... Hope I'm not telling you what you know already. Seriously, stick to it. Unless you have bad knees or something it's so worth it! This way you'll kick your friend's butt next 94.7 :-)
  19. He he. Dude, I think you've been training too much! Go feed your brain, sounds like a scream for glucose ;--))
  20. According to Endomondo my house is moving in the vertical... my total ascent versus descent seldom matches! I wouldn't trust cellphone gps systems like these for comparative purposes between different units. Even with with altimeters using barometric pressure for their measurements there are calibration issues. Still, it's fun, and reasonable to compare your own rides if you accept there are limitations. I'd be curious to know though how close some of the phone apps get and which are most accurate.
  21. I thought by law you have to wear a helmet? But ha ha yes, how often does anyone get fined for breaking that law... Now here's a thought, if you weren't a dumbass (or whatever) for not wearing a helmet before you fell on your head, good chance of reverting to type after... But... if it's the law, is it still your choice? (better get back to work, all this thinking is getting too much)
  22. He reported the accident to the Hillcrest police station, describing it as minor. ... "The driver's vehicle was recovered on the premises of a panel beater with damages in the front, windscreen and roof." From the article quoted above. Sorry guys, I've almost stopped reading these threads cos there's ALWAYS a bunch who start going on about how it could only have been the cyclist's fault... Please cut the rubbish. All you'll get is more measures that make it difficult to cycle and less preventative policing. Is that what you want??
  23. An observation: I've often noticed that when a second (third or more) car passes me in a string, it usually passes closer to me than the first?? As if the driver wants to bisect what space is left. This is very common and difficult to anticipate because you can't really know whether there's one or more cars approaching from behind. It's happened so often I've wondered why people driving calculate like that? MUCH more needs to be done for driver education!! Not just licensing and policing. Get kids out on bikes... Get them riding together in safe areas... if you miscalculate, you feel it. To Sonia, family and friends... deepest condolences...
  24. Total agreement. Had one nasty fall, on tar, when a landrover decided to get in my space and i had to grab a handful of recently adjusted brakes. Which worked too well. Did a beautiful tuck and roll onto my left shoulder, from instinct developed a long time ago doing 1000s of Judo rolls. Did crack a rib though because the speed with which the tar met my back was a bit much - but it could have been a helluva lot worse. It's worth practicing rolling/falling on soft grass but leave the bike out of it!
  25. Going DOOOWWWN! first time I can say this in years. Started using myfitnesspal the day I heard about it and been steadily and painlessly dropping .5kg every week for 8 weeks now. Haven't changed much about the way I eat just monitoring input and expenditure... Yay! And, oh yes, 4kgs less on a long hill adds up to a lot of time saved! Now for the other 40... (well, sort of)
