  1. Hey guys, I fear this topic may be in the process of being hijacked.... This post was started to try and encourage a fun loving group of people that enjoy night riding to get together for regular safe night mountain biking rides. Eg: Safety in numbers, as with diving in the sea. This group was not started in order to debate legality or safety issues regarding riding at night etc. Life is not safe and totally unpredictable. If anyone believes that it is wrong, illegal or does not agree with this form of riding then that is his/her opinion, which they are welcome to. Rather then, please do not join us, as we are all keen, passionate cyclists of pretty much the same sentiment and we are looking for like minded individuals to have fun with and to exchange friendships.
  2. Thursday nights sound good, obviously weather dependant. Haven't ridden in like over a week...
  3. The only law regarding nite riding is that u may not enter after sunset... Reading between the lines this means that as long as you enter before sunset, then legally your are not in the wrong. Thats my argument if i ever get s questioned by a San Parks representative.
  4. Unfortunately Im not from Durban but if its the course which I attended in Cape Town, presented By Johan Bornman from YellowSaddle then its well worth it!! You won't regret it as it has some great South African humour thrown in too.
  5. Would steer clear of the Saris range and buy a Thule bikerack instead. I have a Thule Freeway 968 and its simple, bullet proof and reasonably priced. A mate of mine has a Saris and one of the plastic cradles has broken. I think it may of been a small reversing accident, however, if it was a metal rack it would of most probably just been scratched or slightly dinged. The plastic Saris also has a fair bit of flex once the bike has been attached and seems to have alot of sideways flex... A bit too much for my liking Get a Thule.
  6. Mikkelz: I think SAN Parks forgot to issue you with your rule book when you renewed your Wildcard?? LOL!
  7. Yo Gravity... this group is for girls/ladies that want to ride at a comfortable and enjoyable pace...possibly social riders. Probably not the group for you. Why don't you join the "Bridge Cycle Night Rides" group and come ride from Tokai Gate to the mast in a little over an hour.... I Guarantee that pace will get you out of the dishwashing
  8. Careful if you ride with this guy... He's been known to break chains as his legs have grown in the last few months... Once the chain has been shortened, his bike will possibly only have 3 available gears.... Which then results in a lot of effort to get up hills accompanied by swearing and shouting... and sometimes the occasional bike toss from the edge of a rocky outcrop!! Very strange character.....
  9. Then clearly you are a MAN.... Is your first name Castor?
  10. Last time I checked, Dave George, Kevin Evans, Burry Stander, and all the top guys weren't lazy gits.... Ja, I know they are sponsored and can ride what they want, but they ride full sussers for a reason... and the reason ain't about weight
  11. The floating disc allows the inner portion (spider) of the disc mounting system to be made from a lighter, weaker material and hence decrease the rotating mass of the wheel and adding to the overall lightness of the bike.
  12. I also converted to GS about a month ago with no issues regarding any thumb pain etc. It could be your riding style, hand position, reach etc.. Your sweep may not be the same on the new bars or perhaps you have set them up differently to your last bar... My hands are always around my GS's (permanently) as my brakes are positioned so that I can grab them while shifting. I find that the force to shift up or down is shared by the thumb and pointing finger and the webbing between my thumb and pointing finger is up against the gear shift indicators. Last thing to consider is perhaps the SRAM handlebar grips ( the shorter one's that are supplied when you buy GS's) are slightly thicker than your old bar grips and this is making your hand "open" more instead of "close". Initially I had a little bit of hand pain for the first few rides as my hand adapted to a slightly bigger diameter grip.
  13. Thats goes for me too... Rode last night, weather was lekker. Catching some rest for the Paarl race this weekend. Will hopefully ride next week before "Die Burger".
  14. Hi chaps, Will not be making it tonight as I only returned from Knysna yesterday and have just beaten away a cold.... Will possibly ride next week, weather permitting....
  15. Dude, unless you are a super weight weenie, it does not matter. K:ium is slightly lighter than the Manganese. I got the Manganese rail and its perfect.
  16. Just got my Gobi and it's ROP!!
  17. Hey guys, Just a word of caution with respect to CRC. My brother and I have ordered from them a few times before. Make no mistake, their prices are good and you can definitely score a bargain, even with shipping, vat and custom duties added to your basket of goods. However, if you plan on ordering general parts like saddles, tyres etc, you should be safe. Once you start ordering intricate service parts such as fork seals, bushings and complete fork/shock service kits, BEWARE!! A month ago I ordered a complete service kit for my 2009 SiD World Cup fork and almost received the incorrect sized seals. The older fork had 28mm stanchions and the newer one(mine) has now got 32mm stanchions. I managed to cancel my order at the last minute owing to one of the service consultants investigating this issue further. According to the site, the kit I ordered will fit any SiD fork... Incorrect Im afraid! Long and the short of it is, sometimes they spec certain things / parts for a brand of bike or component without actually knowing which model it is meant for. The sales people don't know, so they are basically a warehouse supplying goods with little or no product know how... Who know's if the sales people even ride bikes and know enough about the parts, since it is basically an internet store (E-Store). Fortunately I was one up on them and after a series of e-mails and telephone calls it was established that my parts ordered would of been incorrect. They subsequently have updated their website with this info so that no one else falls victim to incorrect fork seal / bushing orders. Hope this helps.
  18. Ditto, not looking to get sick before Knysna Will see you guys in about 2 weeks time for a night ride, otherwise possibly this Saturday or Sunday. Ciao fella's

    Lights

70 meters is a fair distance! I wouldnt say that far, but whats nice is the wide beam illuminates the sides of the trails and probably around 8 meters. The spot has awesome distance which I set at 8 meters, so the beam patterns overlap ever so slightly. I would guess total distance somewhere around 40 meters which is more than enough. I suppose if I changed the spotlights' angle on the handlebars I could achieve greater distance but I wish to see things clearly in a closer proximity.

    Lights

Dude, for under 3K, Blackburn System X8's all the way!! Double light set, handlebars mounts plus 1 x helmet mount. Great compact Lithium Ion battery (not heavy) which gives great burn time! You won't be sorry. Oh.... don't be surprised if people mistake you for riding a motorbike towards them because the LED's give off true white light
  22. Although pretty pricey, I have had good experiences with Conti Mountain Kings in pretty much all conditions (2.2 UST combined with tubeless rims)
  23. Your inseam X 0.883 In your case: 845 x 0.883 = + - 746cm. Measurement taken from centre of BB, parrallel to seat tube and finally up to area where your sit bones rest. (may be a good idea to use a spirit level along your saddle from aft to fore). This worked for me, final asjustment may differ by up to 2 centimeters. Other than that, perhaps use this as a starting point and play around. Also consider that adjustments should only be made every 2 weeks in order to give yourself time to adapt.
  24. Im definitely in if theres a fork workshop scheduled for Cape Town. I spoke to Johan about a month ago regarding this topic and he said that numbers are the name of the game in order to make it worth his while. I have spoken to some buddies and they are also keen. Calling all the DIY home mechanics out there, here's your chance to service your own fork and save some bucks.... I don't trust anyone with my SID Worldcup except myself
  25. For under R3000-00, I am surprised that nobody has mentioned the Blackburn System X8 lighting system? I have a set and they are brilliant. 2 x Lumi-LED lights, one with a flood (wide) beam and one with a spotlight beam. I have four other mates and we all bought these lights together, not one of us have had any problems. We use them on the Tokai trails and regularly ride the mast during the week. The beauty with these lights is that you are free to use them on your handlebars or mounted to your helmet. The battery pack is Lithium-Ion, so no memory effect plus it is one of the most compact units on the market. I regularly see other lights on the trail such as Sigma, Cateye etc and am amazed at how yellow the lights look while riders are approaching me. The Blackburns are a true white light, due to a 3w LUXEON Emitter. The battery also powers the loads at a constant current which makes your battery life longer. Another nice feature is that the lights will flicker when you enter the last 20 minutes of battery power. This usually means, pedal like HELL!!!
