The Smalblaar is the stream that runs down the Du Toits Kloof as you exit the Hugenot tunnel going from Cape Town towards Worchester along the N1. Fishing on it is controlled by the Cape Piscatorial Society and only catch and release flyfishing is allowed. You have to book a beat through the CPS to fish it, but you don't have to be a member. Visitors pay a small day / permit fee. (see the above link) It is a lovely stream to fish but you do hear the N1 traffic rushing past on some stretches. The scenery is absolutely stunning and the place is photogenic in the extreme. If you want some quieter waters, the Elandspad is one of the side kloofs, but this takes a bit of a hike to the best beats.

    Here's another early morning picture.

  2. Hi Garreth. Just a question for you. Are you riding the correct size frame? Sometimes if a person rides a frame that is too big or too small or the bike is not setup properly it could feel like you are not in control of it. I ride 50mm and 38 in heavy wind sometimes and never felt unsteady. Yes, I do get pushed around but always feel in control. If your setup is fine thenI would say give it a bit more time but being stiff in the shoulders never helps and worrying about falling while out training should not be the focus. If your setup is correct, try moving your position of your grip around till you feel comfortable like top bar, drops or on the hoods. Hope you overcome this soonest

  3. I was reminded today of how incredibly lucky I am. My bike needed a little break, so I took my one youngster out flyfishing on that prince of streams, the Smalblaar. We left home at 5 am, by 6 am we were on the water and by 7am I had my first little wild rainbow in hand. He got his first shortly afterwards. We lost count after a while. By 11am we called it a day and by 1pm we were having lunch with the rest of the DJR mob. Truly blessed!

STOP the press! Please tell me exactly where this is
  4. My 2 cents about this topic and other input. I was hired by some teams and corporates to take some images so I was in the thick of it. I am not a tittle tale so NO Team names will be mentioned but there were plenty of teams crossing the line and when I upload the images onto my facebook page, I will make sure not to expose anyone as its not my place. Now on the support vehicles...utter shock! Every time I passed a team I use the right hand side yellow lane and honk my horn as far back as 20m as I approached the teams and when going past but some support vehicles were flying past the teams at high speed without letting them know they were passing so they catch back up with their team. Saw a support vehicle crest a rise while passing a team just to run a approaching vehicle off the road to avoid a head on collision. Another had to push his way into a large group of teams cause he miss judged a opening when a truck approached. Yes 202km is long but if the teams can do the first half without them then why cant they do the 2nd half without them and just have feeding zones?

  5. yes yes, I know what comes after this. But who hasnt picked up a container truck from paardeneiland to Milnerton or Tableview before? Generally you dont sit right on the bumper of the truck as the draft is big enough to sit 2-3m back and have enough time to brake. Problem is you never know if you going to hit that pot hole or half a brick in the road
