  1. i found the following along the route of the 94.7......i'm keeping it
  2. and then designers wonder why motorbike brake levers have those little balls on the tips, and think its not applicable to mtb's
  3. yes!!!
  4. 22 years - nothing broken. I ride mountainbike, ride hard, take chances, fall often. Learn how to fall properly. If you fall with your arms outstretched in front of you, you are going to break stuff, usually your collarbone or wrist. try to dissipate energy by rolling. no matter what the scenario, try and land in such a way that you roll onto your shoulder then onto your back. remember to tuck your arms in. often a roll like that can have you end up back on your feet again. if you cant roll, still try and take the impact with your shoulder or back. example - the other day i misjudged a bunny-hop onto the kerb. in essence i smacked the kerb at 90 degrees travelling at about 45km/h. so over the bars i went. instead of putting my hands out in front of me i tucked my arms in and rotated ever so slightly so that the initial impact would be on my shoulder, the rotation kept going and i ended up on the pavement in a sitting position. ok, the front wheel was toast, bars were skew, and i had a few grazes but nothing that even required attention. if i had tried to land on my feet i would have had two messed up wrists and knees. see how this guy dissapates energy by rolling - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQgFxDSqft4
  5. whatever, at least i dont wear pink
  6. arguing that discs would have too much power for a road bike is missing the point - with the stopping power available i can lock up my wheels on my MTB at any given moment too - it's about controlling that power accurately with the the tip of a single finger. i thought road cycling was all about performance, accuracy, and precision - disc brakes are the embodiment of the above whilst adding simplicity, low maintenance, and clean design. rims too (in terms of strength vs weight) have improved significantly since the advent of disc brakes. i need not convince those who dont want to be convinced, but having been an avid cyclist for 22 years, if you ask me whether i would ever consider going back to rim brakes - the answer is NEVER! technology does not evolve against all practicality, it embraces the shortcomings of current designs and improves on it.
  7. hey lance, your ignorance is blinding you! disc brakes don't necessarily represent better stopping power - the avatages are numerous: no more brake fade better modulation one finger braking rims that are out of true dont affect brake set-up ease of set-up & adjustment ease of pad changes not affected by water wheel changes are in fact quicker because you dont have to fuss with the brakes to get the wheel out and back in again. disc brakes have completely revolutionized mountainbiking, i'm surprised the road fraternity has taken this long to catch on. i dont see how road-specific designed hydraulic brakes could weigh more than conventional rim brakes. keep wearing your power balance bracelet and keep resisting change. heck, you probably said pneumatic tyres would never work, back in the day when everyone was running solid rubber tyres. and lets not forget that all the top performing motorcycles and performance cars run drum brakes, and the really top of the range motorbikes use rim-brakes....NOT!
  8. you mean you did not wait for the money to clear before handing over the bike?!?!?!?!?!? i'm guessing you never met this guy in person either. do you not get just a little bit suspicious when a total stranger is willing to deposit money into someones bank account who he's never met, for a bike that he has never actually seen? here are some tips: an sms from the bank is worthless, it could have been a stolen cheque deposited into your account - the sms will show that the amount has been deposited, but it will never clear. thus wait for money to clear before handing over the item. a typical nigerian scam is when a fraudulent cheque is deposited. the buyer then contacts you and says he needs his money back as he has found a better deal. you then refund his money, and then a few days later the cheque is rejected, leaving YOU out of pocket for the amount. WATCH OUT FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE TOO EAGER TO DO A DEPOSIT WITHOUT HAVING MET YOU OR SEEN THE GOODS!!! it is the easiest thing to forge a deposit slip and then fax it to the unsuspecting seller. even if you get an sms saying that the money has been deposited AND cleared, he can legally reverse the transaction within 48 hours if i recall correctly. when selling goods, only accept CASH CASH CASH, or go tot he bank together with the buyer and get a bank guaranteed cheque which you yourself can verify right there and then!
  9. must be the headset, check it again. or what about water in the rim, did you ride through any rivers recently?
  10. or....use the original paint as a basecoat. it works really well, simply roughen it with sand paper of a fine grit, then clean off with soap and water, rinse thoroughly, allow to dry, and respray.
  11. been using this for well over a year, and wish i had bought it sooner. i once drove up to far northern botswana without it damaging or chafing the paintwork, spoiler, or bodywork on the car. the system doesn't suspend the weight of the bikes off the straps, the weight is put on the "feet" of the rack which rest on the bumper of the car, while the straps just secure it in place, so the securing load is spread evenly between all 6 straps which minimizes the pressure on the spoiler quite significantly.
  12. i got mine on the hub second hand for R700, not sure what they go for new.
  13. try the Saris Bones rack (available at cycle lab), i have one and have used it many times on a yaris - i love it! it performs (and looks) way better compared to my friends' thule. the thule is too wide for anything but a large frame, where as the Bones rack is narrower and can also be adjusted infinitely. it is made of plastic so it wont scratch my frame during mounting and dismounting, wont bend or rust, and is stylish and light. thule has dominated the market for ages and i dont really see why - they are over priced and quality is becoming suspect. the saris is real solid and well thought out & designed to fit almost any shape of car from a hatchback to a sedan to a stationwagon because it is so adjustable. it also folds up extremely compact when not in use. read the reviews here: http://www.mtbr.com/cat/accessories/bike-rack/saris/bones-rack/prd_357577_98crx.aspx
  14. EVERYONE should get a Go Pro helmet camera! because then, like the people in the pictures on the box and on the tv screen at sportsmans wherehouse, you too will, without any prior training, instantly transform into a basejumping, heli-skiing, downhill mountainbiking, wingsuitflying, superbike racing, rallycar driving, hanglider flying, cliff diving, ice climbing, bull running, rollerblading, tight rope walking, waterfall kyaking, highly paid extreme sports professional!!! heck, with that camera on your head, even going to the toilet becomes an extreme sport that millions of people will automatically want to watch and revere on youtube! and dont forget, with a go pro, your movie will magically edit itself by clipping out the hours and hours of boring footage, adding the latest speed metal music, and obtaining extra angles shot from fifteen other cameras that weren't attached to your body and without which the movie would not have had relevance! if only.... the wonders of advertising can make us all believe and achieve the impossible! can you tell that i have had to sit through more than a few BORING AS HECK home made "point of view" movies which the author has failed to edit, forcing me to sit and wait for the so-called "exciting part" for over 10 minutes of nothingness and eternal boredom, while the author sits next to me saying, "ok its coming now" every 30 seconds, and then when it finally arrives i go - WAS THAT IT!?!?! :D :D
  15. what?! seriously, i cant believe this is a legitimate question, and if it is, you basically answered your own question by admitting that spd shoes dont have grip without CLEATS....duh buy them some tekkies.....or since they already have the shoes...............wait for it............WAIT FOR IT.... .....SPD's & CLEATS!
  16. make sure the cleats are installed correctly - i have come across two incidences where cajees installed cleats upside-down making it EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to unclip.
  17. since no info is given and we are left hanging, maybe if we start speculating the truth about what really happened will be made known. did this guy not have a lovers tiff with his missus and spite her by disappearing for a couple of weeks like that guy from bloem who was recently found fishing in natal two weeks later and after his wife thought the worst.... or maybe a drug addict who was incapacitated in a culvert under a road somewhere.... or maybe he was kidnapped and escaped.... or maybe simply a d...
  18. i do the same. ride between 18 and 25km three to four times during the week after work, then do longer 35-45km rides on the weekend. during the week i push a lot harder averaging around 19km/h, and on weekends i cruise at 15km/h. i try not to look at distance during the week, as long as i stay out for one hour to one hour thirty. i'm not training for anything, to me its about getting outside and enjoying life - destressing and getting the blood pumping. i ride for pleasure, always trying to "hit that tricky little section a little bit faster with better technique". when i race, it's against myself. ie, if i averaged 26 on a certain section yesterday, i try and do it at 29 tomorrow. indoor trainer? forget that!!!! i'd rather not do it at all. if you are limited by daylight, get a cycle light. i did for the first time this year (ive been mtb'ing since '91), and WOW, suddenly i can stay out as long as i want! and yes, offroad DOES make a difference, a huge one. compare riding uphill on uneven terrain as opposed to a smooth surface - there's way more rolling resistance.
  19. haha, that's what everyone said about 29ers
  20. this was spotted on the spruit this morning! it is still very hush hush, and i nearly got klapped taking the photo, but managed to snap one pic before the guys from specialized intervened. i followed it up with a friend of mine who who works for specialized and he confirmed that they are testing a new 37.2 inch mountainbike, which apparently will make its debut on the next cape epic, and is set to take the world by storm, not only totally revolutionising the mountainbiking world, but the rest of the world too. too bad for all the posers who recently rushed out and bought 29ers after being convinced by calous salesmen to become part of the passing fad. 29ers are out, 37ers are in!
  21. as clever as a solar powered flashlight
  22. here you go. made some improvements today. it works like a dream. on a side note, about 20 riders came past while i was there today. NONE of them (except for one skeptical dude) even tried it. one guy asked why i didn't rather cut the tree down, to which i replied "where's the fun in that?", another group were so soft they couldnt lift their bikes over the stump, so they used the ramp to walk their bikes over, and another turned around when he saw the tree. ....um, OK....i guess the mountainbikers of today are softies.
  23. a tree has fallen on the lower section of the spruit (just before the N1 bridge) and completely blocked the path (it stretches from river on the right, to the wall on the left). instead of sourcing a chainsaw and chopping it up, i have built a nice obstacle out of this by personally carrying a tonne of rocks, and building an up-and-over. it does require some skill to ride over this obstacle, which not only poses a nice little challenge, it also negates having to stop and get off to pick your bike over the log. my work was interrupted by nightfall, and however you can easily ride it without bashing the chainring, it could still use a few more rocks to reduce the acute angle of the "ramp". everybody, please feel free to improve this by adding more rocks to it!
  24. do you know what "WTF?" stands for? then the "do i look retarded?" comment and finally "before you say im dishonest!" if someone swears at me, then gets sarcastic, and lastly implies that my motif is to make him look dishonest....i'd tell him to stick it - i'd say the service you received is top notch, DESPITE your *** attitude! i didn't read the rest of your post as clearly you have some anger issues, and any poor service you may have received after your initial contact with CWC would have been your own doing. the customer is always right, but only up to a point.
