  1. I don't blame you, riding alone at night is a pretty awesome experience. That was my initial plan, but if it hadn't been for Jakkals I think I would've done one or two less laps this weekend.
  2. Coz it's only fun when you get a reaction, and no one's feeding the troll.
  3. Haha noted. I'll stop being a troll.
  4. Great event, well organised! Well done Meurant and team! My only complaint is that I have to wait until 2022 to do it again. I had a good ride, but not quite as many laps as I would have liked. I started off with little sleep on Friday after a rough week at work - so my strategy going in was to do one opening lap and then sleep for a few hours and put in the hard laps late afternoon and evening. That strategy went out the window from the first second. PhilipV, Jakkals, CJVan, Hansolo, and myself did 2 opening laps together - the heat was brutal, but the excitement was high, so after a quick stop to refuel I went out for a third lap - that was my first mistake. The heat did a number on me and I was already quite low on hydration. After lap 3 I tried to sleep, but no luck, and after sitting around for a while decided to go out for another 2 laps with CJVan - little bit less heat, but still on the warm side. At this point I was quite sleepy, but it was braai time. I took a quick shower - felt like a new person, and we sat around the fire until about 9:30. We then started getting ready, was waiting around for the guys to get ready when we noticed PhilipV was gone - we thought he had gone for a PRD, but the sneaky bugger pulled a race move and went out for a solo ride - he clearly wanted to win the side bet! Jakkals and myself started pedalling again around 10, went out for 2 laps, our tally now sitting at 7. At this point I felt amazing, I had plans to do at least another 3 laps before going to sleep, but when we were refuelling for lap 3 of the evening the tiredness hit me very hard. On the 3rd lap I bonked HARD - took a tactical chunder at the end of the lap in Fountain of Youth, and decided to call it quits and go to sleep. Got back to camp, and proceeded to throw up a cocktail of energy bars, bananas, and steak - felt pretty terrible, but fell asleep straight away after a quick shower. At this point PhilipV had not yet gotten in from his night ride, and I knew I'd be at least one lap behind him in the morning, possibly 2. I woke up around 6, with 3 hours of sleep. The tally at that point: PhilipV - 9 Jakkals - 8 Myself - 8 CJVan (battery failure and a trail run too much that week) - 7 Hansolo - 7 I knew the chances of catching up at this point was slim to none, so my goal was just to make 12 laps and get that silver medal. Jakkals and myself went out for 2 laps, quick refuel, and then another. Now around 10AM it was starting to get very hot, and I don't do well in the heat. I went back to camp, and Jakkals did another lap. PhilipV was also out on the trail, putting in the hard laps in the heat on his big trail bike. Jakkals and CJVan circled back to camp for me, and we did our final lap, finishing just after 12. That put the final tally at: 14 for PhilipV (On a Giant Trance with slow rolling tyres), 13 for Jakkals (On a Giant Trance with slow rolling tyres and flat pedals), 12 for me, and Hansolo (and that on a rigid bike - kudos!), CJVan on 10 (Try not cancel yourself on a trail run 2 days before the event next time) My money was on CJVan for the win, but it seems Philip's competitive racing side came out for the victory. All said and done, it was an awesome weeked, lekker camping, better company! Hats of to the sharp end of the race, you guys are not human!
  5. But it just looks so... right
  6. At least Odi is passionate about something worthwhile
  7. Haha in the spares box! Preference would've been the 2.35
  8. I get where you're coming from - and I sorta agree when we're talking trail bikes and Table Mountain - but quite honestly for what the Chad was asking - you are giving kinda terrible advice As soon as the km's start racking up past 50 or so and there is lots of climbing you are gonna start swearing at yourself for fitting heavy casings. 95% (very scientific stat there) of people will be fine and are on Exo casings, especially on downcountry/marathon/trail bikes.... And I know you said YOU won't fit Exo casing on your bike - but Chad wasn't asking about your bike. Sorry if it comes across as douchy right now - might be the severe lack of sleep since Friday speaking. Oh, and thanks - 24hr was tough - the heat between 12 and 3PM on Sat, and then 10 and 12:30 on Sunday absolutely killed me. And the amount of climbing in that little loop was brutal!
  9. Ikon or Ardent Race out back, Ardent Race on the front. Ardent Race doesn't look like it has much bite, but it grips plenty when you lean it over. As long as you don't expect Minion level grip from it and ride it like it's intended to be ridden it is more than fine. Over a three day stage race I'd rather save the weight and have less rolling resistance. I did the Berg & Bush with the Ikon/Ardent Race combo (similar terrain to Sani I believe) on my Stumpy, and didn't feel like the tyres held me back at all.
  10. Myles.... down country bike dude. Exo is more than fine for essentially a fun marathon bike. All 105kg of me spent this weekend doing 150km and 3000m of descending on a 2.1 Ikon on the back of a Camber and I smashed the back wheel hard a few times and I had no issues whatsoever.
  11. I would use that exact combo, alternatively an Ardent Race on the rear - I prefer it's side knobs to the Ikon for the rear.
  12. It was my favourite spot when I lived in Pta, very nice trails.
  13. Edit: Asked and answered.
  14. Coenie, dis 'n voorbeeld. Moet nou nie moeilik wees nie.
  15. Didn't know you were into that Myles
  16. CJVan will make a cup for you. Look for the guy with a beard making coffee for our camp
  17. Want ek wil een of ander tyd die naweek 'n burger bestel, en dit kan heel moontlik elektrisiteit benodig. En neem aan hulle sal 'n generator hê vir timing equipment.
  18. Liking that post just feels wrong, but thanks for the info! haha
  19. I doubt it will actually be that much elevation. Google maps tends to overestimate it a bit, and looking at my past ride data there I don't see how it can be that much. I am gonna guess around the 280m mark - but that is just a guess. Either way, it's lots of elevation. Thinking of fitting a smaller chainring for the weekend so I can just spin out the hills nicely. Don't think grinding up any hills is going to be a smart tactic.
  20. Most brands still make 2.1 options, so you should be able to order from any bike shop. I know Maxxis have quite a few XC tyres in 2.1...
  21. F1 cars use 1.6L engines
  22. A hardtail's rear wheel gets hung up on rocks and ledges and potentially loses traction while a dual suspension's rear wheel moves up and out of the way of obstacles allowing it to maintain traction. The climb will be smoother on the DS. Of course, I am generalizing a bit because there are many climbs where a HT will be faster, and I am assuming we are comparing a very efficient dual suspension bike rather than a enduro or trail bike with lots of pedal bob and/or extra weight.
  23. It's a Spaz SA thing... not global. Specialized have revamped the Fuse platform last year, and it is a ripper, seriously capable bike - but I have not seen it in any of the concept stores yet. As for the Stumpjumper hardtail, it was always their XC race bike, it hasn't been dropped - the naming convention just changed to Epic hardtail to align with the DS platform.
