  1. Hey guys, so again I've got a quick question. My company has a treadmill in the gym, and some days I just can't get a run in before work and after work I'm just a bit lazy to go out after 7pm. I've read that if you set the incline to 1% its similar to outdoor runs, so could you do your longer weekly runs on the treadmill?
  2. Running background fairly rubbish, cycling 4 years swimming 7 years (3 of which at competitive schools-provincial level). 21 years old. But also thanks for the input. Will be giving it all in training and then see what happens on the day
  3. So I have about 2 weeks of 'consistent' running in, and feeling good. My "long" run on Sat was a brick workout 10min spin at home, to a 5k run at 5:30min/km into a 70km road ride. I'll be upping the run distance next weekend and see how it feels. So if I can get that Sat run up to about 15km along with the ride, is it possible to run a 1:30 half at Soweto?
  4. Roadclaw has 8mm drop and Roadtalon 4mm drop. I'm eyeing the roadtalon as all my other inov8 shoes are 0-3mm drop. I've had a look at the addidas and nike shoes as well today, but I think I'll end up heading to sweatshop this weekend to try a few different ones before I settle. I see the roadtalon has 4mm drop and the 3mm insole, will that effectively make it the same as a normal 7mm drop shoe?
  5. So I have another noob question, currently I have a pair of inov8 shoes with a 6mm heel to toe drop, but they are almost at the end of their life. What else would be recommended with similar to the same drop but a bit cheaper? The new model of the one I had is nearly 2k and I'm not keen to spend that much on a shoe just yet.
  6. How do you guys measure stride and cadence? I typically train with my Wahoo HR belt and my iPhone. Would love a watch but way un-affordable for me at this stage.
  7. Along with a set of bib shorts and a helmet. Fell pretty hard and did some damage to the bike when the handlebars rotated. excess was 5% of entire claim
  8. In an insurance payout I got me some new brakes and grips (ESI Extra Chunky)
  9. http://www.runnersworld.com/2-hour-marathon/so-close-kipchoge-runs-a-20024-in-the-breaking2-attempt 25secs from the sub 2
  10. Will a Triathlon brick workout be a viable workout? Say cycle the 100 what what km but then follow that up with a 5k (in the beginning) and up it to 10/15km? That way I should be able to hit 40-50km's
  11. I normally run about 15-20km a week in 3 runs. I struggle to get a 4th in as I normally cycle around 100 - 130km on Saturdays and Sundays up to 60km. Should the 4th run on Sunday be easy, or should I make the other 3 longer?
  12. No injuries currently, I have gotten my left achilles injured a whole bunch of times, but the cause has been found and rectified. No major goals, If I can run at my training pace for and finish under 2:15 that would be great. But mainly I'd like to finish well within my capabilities. there is a half in August I'd like to do with a friend.
  13. Hey Guys, So silly question, but what is the least amount of training you can put in for running a half? I get about max 3 runs in a week, and recently accidentally (i got lost in a foreign area) ran a 10k in training a relatively easy pace 6:16/km. Also, it's a pace I easily sustained for the entire distance, but my HR was a avg of 166 and maxing out at 190 bpm. My runs are maybe max 4 hrs a week and bike training around 11-14(depending on my training block)
  14. Thanks for this, I'll inbox her, hopefully this'll help my mental block against it. Yep, I normally just let my breathing back to normal and wait about a minute. For me its about 3 min rest max. Also, this is not at a high intensity, this is purely a breathing drill, I've seen some guys at our club go way too hard and then it just defeats the purpose of the exercise.
  15. If it's specifically during the set, try working on breathing drills. about once every week or 2 we do this: swim for laps until you have completed 3 sets 50m breathe every stroke 50m breathe every 3rd stroke 50m breathe every 5th stroke 50m breathe every 7th stroke 50m breathe every 5th stroke 50m breathe every 3rd stroke 50m breathe every stroke This should be at a comfortable pace, not too hard. Focus on breathing out all the air under the water and inhaling properly once you breathe again. Teaches you to properly exhale and get fresh air, as well as improving lung capacity.
  16. How do you train for waves, and the people slapping while swimming. My level of fitness in the pool is excellent(been a strong competitive swimmer since start of high school) and I work with a swimming coach for workouts etc. But each time I do a open water swim the chaos in the start makes me panic and I back off and ultimately end up in a bad position.
  17. Howsit guys, I need advice for a new tire combo my LBS has in stock and can get me for a deal. Maxxis Crossmark and Ikon. They will be mostly on training rides consisting of about 60% gravel roads, 20% single track, 15% loose rocky technical bits (rocks out here are smallish and sharp) and 5% tar. Racing I do is mainly XCM. How do these perform ITO grip, puncture resistance etc.? My other options: Conti xking + raceking protection combo, but at nearly 1.5k already is a bit steep for me. Barzo/Saguaro - unsure of pricing Spez GC and fast trak w/ grid casing Thanks
  18. This is where I wish my mtb was sorted. Have missed this race the last 3 years now and will as well this year.
  19. There is a massive no entry sign at the top of the first climb, yet people ignore that and go down there. Myself included once or twice before. There should be stricter rules, but there isn't really a way to enforce them. The best we can do is try and educate people about the possible dangers and hope they listen.
  20. Who can one direct queries to at SBR regarding potholes in the reserve. I saw there are 2 potholes on first major downhill, right on the line if you're taking it with speed.
  21. Bummer about the fall, that downhill is always sketch. We saw the fatbike guys as they came up that first climb while we were doing our first lap. Didn't look like they were struggling too bad
  22. You can come ride with me, on thursday we're coming from Heidelberg to do a small lap, full lap and another small then back home to Heidelberg. Gives you +- 130 km total with 2100m climbing, then Saturday from heidelberg - dbl SBR - back home (about 160km)
  23. If you park outside the reserve you should anyway do the first climb twice. That's what makes it so fun
