  1. Believe it, or not...
  2. KILLED for a Blackberry, for crying out loud. I don't care what the gun-experts, Rambo's, Chuclk Norrises and other hard-core okes say on this forum, if a guy/s armed with anything stop me, they can have the bike and anything else they want. I will be running as fast as possible in the opposite direction. See the other article above...only stabbed 3 times and a punctured lung...the criminals in this country will kill you without thinking twice, why give them a reason?
  3. If you get hit by a taxi while cycling, are you Finish(ed)? Could a large pothole be termed a Hell-sinky? Sorry, no Danish jokes come to mind.
  4. Yes, but their pricing is weird and their stock levels poor. They charged me DOUBLE for Spez water bottles when compared to Complete Cyclist in Bryanston (ZAR100 vs ZAR45). They also had only one width of a Spez 29er tyre, fast track control, where Complete Cyclist had two sizes/widths.
  5. You mean my old cable jersey knitted by me mom?

  8. Flaming aside, I have found that keeping the core warm in dry weather (Gauteng) is relatively easy with layering and regular gear. Head/neck taken care of by two buffs. My problem is keeping hands and feet warm. Even with toe caps, my feet freeze up - you don't really notice until you get home and cant feel them at all...any help? I think a pair of thermal / winter gloves is required - any recommendations / places to buy?
  9. Where are all the groot bekke in the mornings? They are not on the Spruit, that's for sure. As of this morning, me neither...
  10. Good job and congratulations!
  11. Any "team" sport in a single vehicle / bike / boat / canoe with SWAMBO is soeking for trouble. Even a mixed team (two bikes) can go horrible wrong - you and your missus need to get on REALLY well in times of CRISIS and not descend into a full-blown fight when things get tough. Why would you want to spoil a perfectly good holiday with a tandem?

  16. Athlete's bike found - in Buenos Aires June 5 2014 at 08:56am Comment on this story http://www.iol.co.za/polopoly_fs/catuogno-lib-1.1698898!/image/2871020389.jpg_gen/derivatives/box_300/2871020389.jpg . Argentine athlete, Carlos Catuogno, with his custom made Cervlo triathlon bicycle. Picture: Supplied Cape Town - An Ironman South Africa participant’s custom-made sports gear that went missing on connecting flights from Argentina to Joburg has been found. This week the Cape Argus reported on Argentinian triathlete Carlos Catuogno’s call for athletes to boycott SAA, which he said had ruined his experience of the South African leg of the international triathlon series by losing the bike and other gear valued at about R120 000. SAA accepted responsibility and offered to compensate Catuogno about R17 000, but Catuogno insisted his bike be returned to him. But SAA spokesman Tlali Tlali said the bike case was never handed over to SAA by baggage handlers at Sao Paolo international airport in Brazil. ”On 2 April 2014, our Johannesburg baggage claims service desk logged a missing bag claim and a reference number was generated accordingly. SAA notified and made contact with all parties in the value chain in effort to establish and recover the missing baggage,” Tlali said. Tlali said TAM, the Brazilian airline that flew Catuogno from Buenos Aires to Sao Pao, found the case at a warehouse at Buenos Aires Aeroparque Airport. Catuogno e-mailed the Cape Argus on Wednesday to confirm that he had received the bike and accompanying sports gear. “Incredible. After two months, they finally found the bike! Today they gave me the box with all the stuff in my house. Tomorrow I (start training again)! Thank you very much.” ”We truly regret the unpleasant flying experience endured by our passenger,” Tlali said “Our insistent engagement with TAM is a confirmation of our resolve towards customer satisfaction. We knew we were not in receipt of the items but pursued the matter with TAM until they were recovered.” daneel.knoetze@inl.co.za Cape Argus http://www.iol.co.za/travel/travel-news/athlete-s-bike-found-in-buenos-aires-1.1698899#.U5Ad_foaKUk
  17. Bike jackers caught on helmet camera June 5 2014 at 07:43am By Jonathan Ancer http://www.iol.co.za/polopoly_fs/copy-of-ct-mountain-bike-mugging-5-42385390-1.1698866!/image/1851530986.jpg_gen/derivatives/box_300/1851530986.jpg YOUTUBE Three men were caught on candid camera after they allegedly robbed a mountain biker at gunpoint in Somerset West. Related Stories VIDEO: Bike jackers caught on camera Cape Town - Malcolm Fox waited for the shot. “I know it’s a cliché,” the 36-year-old father of two told the Cape Times on Wednesday, “but in that moment I wondered if I was about to become another statistic; if my two boys would grow up without a father.” Fox, a victim of a bike-jacking on Saturday, captured the dramatic 59-second sequence of the armed robbery on his GoPro, which was mounted on his helmet. Police confirmed on Wednesday that the footage led to the arrest of three suspects. The recording shows Fox riding his bike across railway lines at Ongegund in Somerset West. It was the last kilometre of his ride when a gunman in a woollen hat ran towards him. Fox stopped riding and dismounted. A silhouette of the rider showed him lifting his hands in surrender. http://www.iol.co.za/polopoly_fs/iol-bike-mugging-3-42385389-1.1698869!/image/4262500322.jpg_gen/derivatives/box_300/4262500322.jpg YOUTUBE “Gimme your cellphone,” the gunman ordered, walking towards Fox and cocking his gun. He grabbed Fox’s sunglasses and a pouch, containing his cellphone and keys, hanging around his neck. Fox didn’t resist. “What else have you got? What else have you got?” “Nothing.” A second suspect in a cap approached and took the bike, and a third assailant, armed with a knife, frisked Fox. The gunman peered into the camera. “He didn’t know what it was,” said Fox, “but the footage is so clear I’d hate to think he will get away with it.” Western Cape police spokes-man Lieutenant Colonel André Traut said the footage led them to the three suspects – all aged 22. “The first suspect was arrested on Sunday at his residence in Sir Lowry’s Pass and a Luger firearm was seized. The same day another suspect was arrested, also in Sir Lowry’s Pass. The third suspect was arrested on Monday.” The stolen cellphone and mountain bike were recovered. The suspects appeared in court on Tuesday and will remain in custody until they return to court later this month. Fox, a project manager at Virgin Active’s head office in Claremont, had left Ongegund vineyard an hour and a half earlier to ride the yellow 17km route. It was windy and he was riding alone. He missed the signage and “found myself in an area where you probably don’t want to be”. According to Johan Kriegler, the trail co-ordinator, Fox missed the sign and wandered about 400m to 800m off the trail. “He’s the first person I’ve heard of who missed the sign. In the last two years two other cyclists have had their bikes stolen but this is the first incident where a gun has been used,” he said. Kriegler said he was negotiating with land owners to re-route some of the trails to avoid”hot spots” and move to safer and more open areas. “Unfortunately, riders are soft targets. Thieves are even bumping road cyclists off their bikes to steal them. But they’ve caught these three guys so this is a good advert for GoPro.” The 59-second footage went viral on Wednesday. Fox said he posted the incident on YouTube because he believed he acted in the right way in the situation to avoid a violent outcome. “I told myself to keep calm. I knew I shouldn’t make any sudden movements,” he said. However, keyboard warriors in various corners of cyberspace debated the merits of his “keep calm” approach. “Well done for not trying to be a hero,” said Josh Isaacs. “What a pathetic comment,” responded Lloyd Gardner. “People need to stand up for themselves and stop being bloody victims. Until people start fighting back this crap will continue.” It was Fox’s first ride back on the trails after a five-year break and, although he’s shaken, he will ride again – but this time not alone. 19. 2014 Spez Camber Comp Carbon (@R40k) Read the reviews on the 2014 Camber, they all rate the bike (esp the expert but that's too expensive). I am biased, as I own one, but at least go test one.
  20. Do you use the cadence sensor at all? Does it help?
  21. I was STATIONARY with one foot unclipped and off the path, in order to let the walkers/dogs/children pass...good enough?
  22. You are truly special. Your lack of consideration for your fellow human is tangible. I politely asked that dog owners keep their dogs on a leash and pick up their poo (as required by law and common human decency). This polite request sent you into a (rabies-induced?) demented frenzy of attacks and BS. Over and out. Over and out.
  23. Yes, it is pretty simple until a big Rottweiler (off leash) sinks its fangs into your thigh. I was dismounted at the time, waiting for the walkers to pass, when their huge rottie made a lunge for me - one foot one the ground and the other clipped in means I had nowhere to run to / hide. "Oh, he never does that", says the considerate and caring dog-lover. R2,000 later - a visit to the medi-clinic (after hours and on public holiday) + a week of antibiotics + tetanus shot + various bandages + no swimming till wound healed, which ruined my holiday. Despite the above, I have encountered the same dog and owner twice subsequently and both times the dog was not on a leash. Dog owners appear to operate in a morality/legal vacuum where their rights triumph over everyone else's. This is readily apparent to anyone who walks/rides in Emmarentia Park. Why is it sooooo difficult for dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash and pick up their poop?
