  1. Just as a rider to that; 1. The elevation trick (riser) block has been shown to have no effect 2. Cadence is largely irrelevant as it is the intensity that matters - lets not forget that we are not trying to increase strength here and so low cadence has no bearing 3. Generally the limiter to climbing is FTP (60 min power) and this is best trained with efforts of >15 mins at 95-105% FTP or around 85-90% MHR - so an ideal IDT session for improving climbing would be 2 x 20 mins with 10 min rest in between. 4. Keep it simple and be sure to get the intensity right - not much else matters. Bikemax, I definitely believe that FTP is key BUT I have been wondering about the cadence thing for a while now. As you probably know, I tend to do most of my intervals (L4 & L5) on hills because a) It is difficult to find a flat piece of road that will let me do 20 minutes @ L4 uninterupted b) because it's easier. I can't achieve the same output on the flats as I can on the hills and I've come to the conclusion that it's because I am not training at higher cadence. It seems to me that the effect is different on the body i.e. ftp @ 75-85rpm feels a whole lot different to ftp @ 95-105rpm. Maybe I'm just still soft.
  2. You can get it with a lower seeding too if you are in the Sub-vet, vet or master cats. You can also get a cyclosport licence thru the PPA without belonging to a club even.
  3. I've got the 2006 Tarmac S-Works. Chose it for the looks and the handling. Nothing like pushing it to the limits coming down Red Hill, Simonstown side. It really is very forgiving. Borrowed a Cervelo Soloist for the CSC South African visit and the handling doesn't compare - for the difference in money anyway. I believe that the new Tarmac Expert is the equivalent of the S-Works of 2006 " Specialized FACT 6r carbon, triple monocoque construction, compact race design, Zertz inserts "Haven't heard a bad word about them to date!
  4. Specialized tarmac!!!!!!!
  5. That is exactly what they are designed to do but in a manner which absorbs the force of the impact. It is not the first time that I've heard of this 3 year thing but I guess that it is related to usage and UV exposure too.
  6. MuXMan, If you are so adamant about obeying the rules (as they stand) then you must not ride in the the yellow lane ... ever again. Right??? No, cause it obviously makes no sense to follow this rule. I disagree with your assertion that the road is not our domain. Yes some roads are not our domain, nor the domain of any other non-motorised traffic i.e. the freeways. But when did the other roads become "not our domain"? In some cases where we have cycle lanes they are occupied by cars when it suits them. I pay tax. I pay for the building and maintenance of those roads. The roads have become unsafe for my use. I want the laws of the country to be changed to allow me to safely CONTINUE to make use of these roads. In France and the Netherlands (and many other European countries) MOTOR VEHICLES HAVE THE OBLIGATION OF ENSURING THE SAFETY OF CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS WHEN THEY COME WITHIN A CLOSE PROXIMITY OF THEM. It seems to me that they have got it right. The roads are the domain of all road users and all road users accept each other as being valid users. My suggestions a) Make the yellow line for cyclist use only. Enforce this law. b) Pass a law that a motor vehicle may not come within 1.5m of any cyclist at any time, but with a particular emphasis on passing. Enforce this law. c) Reconsider the single file law. In some cases it is actually better for all road users that the cyclists act as a compact group as opposed to a long strung out line. Passing a tight group is about as difficult as passing a slow truck or horse & cart. Passing a long line of cyclists can be a very challenging task if you have any consideration for the cyclist safety. Educate ALL ROAD users that cyclists have a right to be on the road and they have a right to be safe. Educate cyclists specifically that along with these rights come responsibilities. 7. Ja Baas! Asseblief Baas, moet my nis slaan nie Baas. Ek doen dit nie weer nie Baas.
  8. R2S2, I never stated that cyclists are currently ALLOWED to occupy the full lane. I am saying that in some circumstances I think that it is actually safer and less obstructive to traffic if they acted as a single compact organism about the size of a slow moving truck (for example) as opposed to a long drawn out obstruction. But most of us are so focussed on protecting our particular stance, whatever that is, just for the sake of argument that we aren't open to even considering suggestions like this. We see two or more cyclists in a bunch and we are ready to condemn them! I participate in group rides every weekend and I take my share of responsibility in order to keep the group on the "right side of the law" with a healthy dose of common sense so don't take the opinion that I am an anarchist or that I condone blatant bad behavior. I don't and it is wrong!
  9. The more times that you thank a motorist for taking an action that he would expect to do anyway the more kudos you will win for all cyclists. The initial reaction is "Why is he/she thanking me?" The lasting reaction usually is "Mmm... that was nice of him to acknowledge me". It's human nature! And then the next time (or once it happens enough) they will be sub-consciously "trained" to make life easy for cyclists. The opposite also applies, and some of the people on this forum already accept it - the more people hear about how we don't belong on the roads the sooner they actually accept that principle and sub-consciously make things difficult for us.
  10. I wonder how many spectators heckled him there? Then again ... maybe they just appreciated his talent.
  11. I see the old affliction is back - you need to get that checked out Big H. I remember a good faith healer just across from the Meridian. I'm sure that he can sort you out. You'll just have to promise that you believe or it won't work.
  12. What colour glasses are you wearing ? Don't you think that by doing what he did in his Sponsors outfit' date=' he is bringing disrepute to his Sponsors ? [/quote']Hmmm .... disrepute to his sponsors .... I for one don't have don't think that the reputation of the Barloworld company has been affected. I'll still buy their paint, cars, tractors and anything else that they sell even though big bad Robbie told a prick that he was being a prick.
  13. And South Africa's favourite past time continues unabated - "knock the winner off the podium". I suppose that we are all so perfect that we have every right to take a shot. Right???? TooHot has got it right - blame the kid instead ... except that I don't know how to break it to him! "Hey kid, you can't stick up for your hero cause you'll get him into more trouble".
