  1. The problem with all these posts are we are preaching to the converted.. We all know how we should ride to stay safe, by we I mean the majority of the hubbers.. The awareness needs to get out there into the real world, not the hub world, we are a "handful" of people.. The OP is correct, they are chops, but chances are they don't read the hub, the cyclists that are moaned about, the triathletes that are moaned about, the runners that are moaned about, the motorists that are moaned about will most probably never ever read about the stupidity here.. It's just us and we are already aware..
  2. This is a great idea and getting carte Blanche to do a story on the problem would be super.. I have really been thinking about it and there is an issue, carte Blanche reaches a relatively small audience.. By small, I mean select.. We need to get SABC and Etv. Involved, the masses need to be educated as well. The guy that took me out on the weekend, wasn't part of the "carte Blanche audience" It's the same as twitter and Facebook, it reaches a lot of people, but not all walks of life.. Take the "just a second" campaign and the campaign I am trying to start today "I can drive while..." Most of the people following these twitter handles are cyclist or friends and family of cyclists.. (I may be wrong, but it just seems that way) people that already have a vested interest. I know Dangle is doing a great job with "just a second" with the radio interviews etc - so don't get me wrong.. We need to get non cycling "celebs" or "businesses" to endorse these initiatives, they need to relay the messages to the general public. Insurance companies come to mind, they are directly involved and reach a massive target audience. It's almost like we are preaching to the converted at the moment.. Please don't get me wrong, I am not dissing any initiatives currently out there, I just think we need to try get it OUT there.. I don't have all the answers, but if anyone wants to sit down and come up with possible solution, I am wiling to assist and brainstorm...
  3. I have been guilty of most of these things, we all are.. Need to start with the change somewhere, so I am pledging to stay alert and concentrate 100 % on the road..
  4. Hi guys Got some time on my hands and been wondering what can be done about all these accidents and taking out of cyclist, runners etc I have started a twitter account called "I can drive while" I can drive while texting I can drive while tweeting I can drive while speeding.. Talking on my phone etc People always think, " it won't happen to me" that is until it does.. We need to educate people and if this twitter account can reach even just 100 people, it will maybe prevent one of us from being taken out by a car. If any of you are keen please follow and retweet the tweets. People need to be educated to the fact that things can and do go wrong. Twitter account is @drivewhile Thanks guys Alton
  5. That's it, operating tomorrow, no way I can do Ironman... Super disappointing!!!!!!!
  6. thanks for the comment sweetheart.. I was sticking to the rules on my ride if you read correctly.. The comment I made came from frustration.. I stick to the rules, but sometimes rules are meant to be challenged.. wakeup!!

  10. I always wear gloves while training, saturday was the first time in years that I didn't.. this is what your hand looks like if you fall without.. getting them cleaned at the hospital was FUN
  11. Even if we stick to the rules and ride single file, this happens, I think it is safer to ride 2 abreast, cars take less chances when passing!!
  12. Driver stopped, but could see he was a clueless idiot, he didn't do anything to help..
  13. well a few weeks ago i was held up at gunpoint - today i get taken out by an idiot driver. We were 95 odd km into our ride, coming out of cullinun, 6 of us riding in single file, i was riding in front of the group.. the guy came from behind, passed all the other guys and then hit me with his mirror first, then pushed me off the road.. i went off the road, onto the dirt, which was a drop of about 30 cm and did an endo, landed on my face and almost felt like my neck was going to break.. it happened so fast, i had no idea what happened. long story short, i got stitches, broken helmet, loads of abrasions and bruises and my hand is broken... end of my ironman it seems, they are operating on monday morning. will ask the surgeon to perform a miracle, but i don't think it going to happen... all the training, effort, cost down the drain... at least i live to tell the tail though...
  14. Yebo, that sprint finish almost killed me haha
  15. What were your guys times compared to 70.3 this year? I did 22 min faster here compared to 70.3.. Different course obviously..
  16. Well done, great time.. Pity about the fall :-) we were sitting next to you in the beer tent..
  17. Tough climb indeed.. Did a 5:14 overall, 31 swim, 2:46 bike, 1:51 run.. Bike was 95 km, run was 20.7
  18. haha, very false... my average was close to 40 until that climb, ended with 34 average for the 2 laps....
  19. Very tough race, well organised.. the swim was great, its a great venue to swim at. the bike was fast, except for the insane climb we had to do on each lap, according to my garmin about 13% gradient, it hurt the legs a lot for the run, had to stand and power up all the way.. Run went ok for the first lap, but had stomach issues on the last lap.. only problem was they didn't have coke for the run..
  20. see you there..
  21. rule one, crawling is allowed www.ironmansouthafrica.com 1. No form of locomotion other than running, walking or crawling is allowed.
  22. Have you seen some of the comments coming from people on the hub? there are a lot of people who think aggression and violence can be used to sort issues out..
