  1. A big chunk of the donations went to the 3 farm schools that we routinely pass. Given what we have access to the fees for TGMTB are miniscule.
  2. I haven't read the whole thread and the level of vitriol against Patrick across the 2 pages I've read so far is surprising to me. It is clear to me from the newsletter in question that the PK is tongue in cheek and expresses a frustration at having to repair and re-repair trails - I think he's expressed similar feelings towards the cows too. I can tell you though that I have personal experience of walking a mate with broken bones out of hoogies and being picked up by Patrick in his bakkie and and helped back to the car park at conties so I could take him to hospital and I have access to 190 off kms of well maintained trails for which I'm grateful. IS the community of mountain bikers really so fragile that a clearly humorous threat of a PK means that we have to object so strenuously and denigrate the trail maintenance and the newsletter .... Yussis - I'd really rather be threatened with a jocular PK than deal with all this righteous indignation. Disclaimer- I don't know PAtrick and the mentioned incident is the only interaction I've had with him.
  3. 60th birthday is 6 yrs 6 months .... The tech will be as mature as I am by then
  4. I dont own an ebike
  5. No 2019 was hard surfaces with good grip. More wet frit than slippy sloppy clay.
  6. Ha ha ha... I wonder if that will still be the case on Saturday evening!!!! Kudos to you both. If a woman is willing to be your stoker on a 100mioe gravel ride in the winter rain with 5km of singletrack at the end on that bike she's definitely a keeper.
  7. Hmmm... Some people ride bikes and others have real b@lls.
  8. Who's riding what kind of bike for this? - been tempted to take my checkpoint but my Transbaviaans teammates have forbidden it - so it's my top fuel.
  9. Ja the first tar section out of town is a pretty tight peloton. Lots of overlapping wheels. I've seen okes tumble here before.
  10. That's the right attitude!
  11. That's terrible news. Sorry to hear it.
  12. ha ha ha ... you enter in a fit of exuberance, confidence and optimism now dampened by the prospect of a rainy muddy cold 14 hour bike ride?
  13. be Game changer
  14. looks muddy .... again!!!!
  15. Mamil TV! A video of the 222 weekend. Starring mamil, @lechatnoir, @Jewbaccaand others I can't identify...
  16. You sound passed off @sias. I'm not saying it's easy or cheap to put an event together but that at over 1300 per day of riding it doesn't seem like a good value proposition to me as a consumer. Those are 2 different things.
  17. Noone is saying it's easy and 50 bucks isn't enough to start the car and get to the corner cafe. But over 1300 rand for a days riding, however lekker the event is, seems more than a little high. Of course there are expenses and everyone needs to make a living but I do think think the points about some of the more expensive events are valid.
  18. Maybe there is demand at that price point but not from me. I'll take a weekend in Prince Albert or Grayton with breakfast included.
  19. This thread from 2014 .... Looking at the ride2nowhere.... 2750 for 2 days of MTB.... No man... Just no
  20. Quite often I do get a positive response from motorists when I point out to them that they are doing something that poses danger to me on the bike. A lot depends on how pissed off I am when I approach of course. I believe it's necessary to do it despite how unpleasant it can be. My sig other hates it when she's with and I approach someone in this way. Tells me one day I'll get my block knocked off which may be true. And it won't change the behaviour she tells me which is probably also true. I rationalise it by saying if you were about to be his victim next time he does this dangerous thing and you knew that last time he did it a mamil might have pointed out to him that it was risky and asked him not to do it again, if the odds were even 1 in a thousand that it would change his behaviour, would you want him to have the conversation? And the answer is "hell yes!".
  21. I had an incident a while back where a SUV close passed me (as in mirror brushes the shirt at about 40kmph). Fueled by adrenaline I caught the vehicle at the next robot and did my little routine where I breathlessly say to the driver "I am a father and please don't risk my life like that...." The driver (a black woman probably 15 years younger than me) said "and what am I" and kept repeating it .... And then I realised that her passenger was recording me on the cell phone and the "what am I" was an attempt to elicit a racist slur from me for social media. I suppose I looked like a racial stereotype... A pissed off white mamil who grew up in apartheid years (I was 25 in 1994)The whole scene a caricature of our public zeitgeist in some ways.
  22. Very reasonably priced event. Comparing that to other recently advertised team 100 milers in the Cape ... Pity it's so far away. I will be in KZN in December only.
  23. Phones as bike computers are not great. Hard to read info while on the bike, mounting issues, risk of damaging device .... Perhaps consider an entry level Garmin or wahoo or a forerunner watch.
  24. 30 okes with competitive temperaments, going full tilt in a physical contest involving high degree of physical danger and the stakes are high .... this is not a recipe for rational, calm decision making, considered evaluation of rules etc.
  25. Ja... But I use isoslow technology... So it doesn't really help
