  1. I for one could not run in Ghosts. Too narrow - but only from 30k+ runs did I find that. Then of all nails my second last toe nail would go black. Plus the heel felt weird to me - and led to Achilles issues. Subconsciously it bother me so much in the end that I never put my heel down. So was introduced to low drop shoes and never looked back! Edit: That does not say that there is not thousands of happy Ghost customers - there are! They just did not work for me. I also to run my big toe out at the top though... I simply carry on using it, since it's IMO only cosmetics damage. Weirdly not on all shoes, but most do have the holes to show for that treatment. And ja, mileage is very style dependent and I also agree with the niggle theory. If you suddenly have niggles after every run in a specific set of shoes (I rotate a good couple at the same time) you know it's time to have an emotional moment, say your goodbyes and discard them. Because next time you'll just have the same niggles. And that's where the bills start if you continue for too long - and suddenly the price of a new pair (esp yellow ticket or shoe booster enhanced price) of shoes is not that much.
  2. Ag darnit, what can I say?! I'm above average!
  3. That is bull. Same age and I started running 2-3 years ago. Feeling much better than I did when just cycling. Start easy, build up slowly. Run trails, the little less repetitive nature of terrain helps a lot. But first build up running fitness! Have fun. But start slowly and build up gradually. Otherwise you're looking for trouble, no matter what your age is.
  4. What chased you guys this week?! Fortunately I can claim I tapered!
  5. You have not concentrated, Andrew... It's still way too early to start training. Unless you're doing Oceans. Bugger, I was slightly shocked to see how little time remains for that.
  6. Very interesting read - not that I read every word. I also tend to run slower - mostly in an attempt to keep injuries away. And maybe running more trail also helps with the go-slower attitude. Despite no real speedwork except the odd tempo 10 or so I have at times surprised myself when I do end up doing the odd half. Was thinking of incorporating an interval session every week or two this year. This hasn't materialised yet! Mostly because of, ironically, picking up an injury and now trying to get going properly again.
  7. Haha, same boat! I belong to a club but my working hours (or rather travelling to work hours) makes my training times fall a bit outside the normal "early run" time-frame. And on weekends I want to get done early to get some family time. At last it seems most of my niggly bits are starting to get sorted. Now I must just teach the legs to run further than the singular half training run I did this year...
  8. I'm not the most accomplished runner around here, but I also believe that you're meant to run it. And yeah, you know you're going to walk a couple of the water points, but that's it for me. If you're all fresh and smiling at the end, you're doing it wrong.
  9. Also use SEO 5 for trailrunning - works great. As long as you don't do what a buddy of mine did - and run with a peak cap without turning it around whilst using the light. Then no light is going to save you!
  10. Hacc, I blame Strava only... Now they've gone and plonked in a 5x5 challenge in the week before my first duathlon. As I was running this morning I thought that this is going to be a really (I found the censor button!) idea to continue with this. Excellent results, guys and girls!
  11. Sooo, I tried out my tri suit. With a shirt over, since running in a tri suit in town just on a Sat morning may be frowned upon! First impressions were awesome! On the bike it was just there. Whilst running I felt no amount of padding, yet when I rode there it was - I only did a 20k ride, but still. For the duo next week, not a problem... but got thinking yesterday for the XTerra - surely after the swim all traced of shammy cream will be gone. Soooo... is that one of those what happens in T1 stays in T1 situations? Or how do you get around that problem?
  12. Yip, got one. And very handy tips from how to lay out your things to dressing sequence in T1, things to take note of... I was really impressed with the lady that helped me - I don't know if it's a tri person type thing or whether she's just super helpful. But I do get the feeling everybody involved wants a new guy to succeed and is helping where they can.
  13. Hey Shaper, I went to the SSW shop - what an awesome experience! Very friendly and helpful lady, gave me lots of tips when she heard it's a new venture for me, helped with choices in kit, verified that the fit and sizing is actually correct. Same pricing as on the site, so great prices on what I suspect is simply last year's designs. Which is brilliant for me just starting off.
  14. For those wondering, latest on this is apparently if you do pay for the club, you do not have to pay for the shoe booster activation.
  15. ...and you can remove showers from your calculations - I think both events said that there will be no shower facilities.
  16. I've trained a lot on antibiotics. Just drink lots of water. And be very aware that certain types of antibiotics actually can cause stiffness in tendons and easier ruptures. Missing a week or so's training is nothing compared to tearing an Achilles. And it is not instant, it does come with warning signs, so just be acute aware of this and rather take it easier IF you are on those kinds of antibiotics. I got express warning when I was - with the "it happens gradually, keep an eye out" voice of reason - but the doc knows that I train. Also note that both the antibiotics and the illness will cause your HR to be elevated and you're going to struggle to recover, but I usually notice my HR starts dropping in lighter efforts after a couple of weeks or so. All of that said, I'm not a doctor... I usually ask when the stuff is prescribed what my training should look like and whether I can train, train lighter or continue as I can tolerate.
  17. Having a similar question - we were debating it yesterday. I only accepted this last year because it was in effect free with the shoe booster "deposit". Now... if you shoe booster again in a months time, is it again included in that? I would assume so... In which case paying separately is downright stupid. And with them having little presence in the Cape, the only reason I (and my buddy at work) actually joined was for discount on some races. Both of us belong to other running clubs.
  18. Myyy good grief, was about to close my eyes and do an online order when I browsed the site and saw there's a branch in Somerset West... just around the corner (well... close enough!) from my work! Thanks a stack for this, Shaper!
  19. Cool, thanks guys! Appreciate the feedback. Now for some more decisions... but saw some nice looking Castelli stuff being punted on the other (IM PE) thread by sheer coincidence in timing.
  20. Okay, another stoopid question question from the noob. For Xterra it seems most peeps swim without wetsuit. Soooo... what do you wear?! Will you be able to swim in a tri short/suit or will the padding turn into a sponge? Or simply go in tights/swimming jammers and reason that the bike leg is anyways only that long... Or what? Asking for a friend...
  21. Jaws, FWIW, the race predictor is semi useless. It does not take anything into account (such as age, etc) other than VO2Max you are currently on. So my predictor and somebody half my age with the same VO2Max will be exactly the same. Good luck for the marathon!
  22. No shucks Andrew, that's a bummer! I've had some calf niggles and it's not lekker - esp whilst the physio is busy treating it! Hope it's not too serious and you heal up quickly.
  23. I have an almost similar situation, but... reverse. Having had my gall bladder removed many years ago, I started feeling nauseous at the most weird times, costing me several withdrawals in some key rides. Then it started becoming an everyday feeling. Went through the whole shebang of tests to hear that nothing is wrong - fortunately. And then the fact of the gall bladder came up, the doc started laughing and said well that's a simple fix. So now I'm on a daily med and have had no ill effects since - for the last year+ already. That includes W2W, severeal marathons, Oceans, absolutely no nausea issues. So I know exactly how you feel, esp whilst not knowing what is causing this. And carrying something like Rennies or Tums or such is never a bad idea - helps with cramps as well... Not sure about Gaviscon - but it works the bomb for a slight nauseous feeling!
  24. Hacc, that is a significant difference. Just transition gradually - and most likely only after your big race for the season. I went from 8-10 mm to zero drop without issues, but gradually. And now I jump around between low-drop shoes and since I rotate so frequently, my calves are happy. Generally between 0 and 6. Somehow 4 seems to be the sweet spot, but that may just be because my preferred brand (currently) has a 4 drop.
  25. Well done Mudsimus! That is an awesome feeling to complete your first marathon - and to do it in your target time, so much better! As for the anti inflammatories - not the best idea. You use that only if you are really requiring it to heal an injury. If you really need them, you should be running because you are injured. And running with them stuffs up kidneys if you're not taking on enough water, plus you can worsen whatever niggle you're trying to heal, because you're oblivious to the pain and damage you're causing. For most of my runs I only take water, some long mountain session a far bar or gel just to refuel a bit. And after a really hard/long session a choc milk. (And a beer!) As for progress, my foot is starting to come along nicely and did a slightly longer run for the first time in ages. Darn, it is amazing how quick you "unlearn" to run - I ran really slowly yesterday and it was still a struggle to just get to 17 k's! Been used to just running slow 10's (feedback and rehab) and cycling for a couple of months now. But at least things are starting to look up!
