  1. Different animals altogether... Kinvara and Freedom just wants to go fast - these are easier shoes. So, in short. higher drop, 8mm to the 4. More cushioning and all round a softer shoe. Which is why I like them for longer stuff. I have used Freedoms for a 30k race, and it's fine for that. My feet just felt comparatively tired. What I also like about the Ride/Triumph is because of the softer nature, I can actually alternate my strike (yes, I'm one of those weirdos) when I start getting tired. Haven't even tried it on the Freedoms yet and never took Kinvaras past a half.
  2. Sorry, no idea - I conversely don't know Nike and Adidas sizing to be able to compare! But they compare for me to NB, which is the other brand I wear a lot.
  3. I've used the Triumph ISO 2 till they fell apart... So happy with them - as I am with most Saucony's. For me they are the max drop I go to and only use it for long and recovery runs. Currently using the Ride 4, which is pretty darn close to the same thing. Which sales have them?
  4. What irritates me most is that a truckload of people that have entered today, did so fairly sure that they're not going to pitch up on race, but they miiight... or hey, we can just sub later. That escape route is too easy and stuffs it up for the rest of us. Which means that a good friend of mine, who runs a sub-5 Oceans and 8h Comrades, but is an ICU doc and as such cannot hang around a PC during the day could very well be left without an entry and hoping for one of these subs.
  5. Now with THAT I agree... They ask you to enter things they display to you on your profile screen! That's just stupid.
  6. Much as I agree with the sentiment... Just saw a tweet that more than 6000 entries were already received (despite all the frustration, errors and waiting) by 2 this afternoon! That's half the allotted entries! For the ULTRA! That's insane... who would have predicted that? No need to have a rush for the half - they have a lottery system. Sorry, may sound like I'm playing devil's advocate, but... 6000 ultra entries before 2 on the opening day? If this continues we're also heading for a lottery system.
  7. Well, that may also be scientific proof that a beer halfway is a requirement/enhancement for a sub-4 marathon! (I don't need much more proof than that!)
  8. Not part of the opening rush, so maybe that worked for me! Had to refresh couple of times, entered... and paid.
  9. Whaaaaat?! That's an interesting move. On leave, so will miss it this year - always a nice one!
  10. I've now not done it for the last two years. Last year it coincided with Mont Marie (trail run) and this year I had gastro since Thursday. That gravel - and it's hot by then... with that little climb into the gravel section. Fun times! I'm reverse - I have not run a good time on Winelands on the two occasions I did do it. 2015 it was my first ever marathon and 2016 I ran with a very buggered foot, so to be excused. Wanted to "take revenge" this year, but it was not to be.
  11. It's usually at 10...? @ronniek - Winelands is not the friendliest marathon in the cape, but it remains a special one! So easy to go out too fast on that first flat section, get bitten on the way back - Annandale drag and that last 10, as you say, tend to be real wake-up calls.
  12. With the oxy being quiet.
  13. Nice one Frosty! Awesome to hit your goal first time in a new distance! I had to sit out Winelands - got a stomach virus on Thursday and is even now still a bit pap. But much better... Even braved my first coffee this morning!
  14. That should be the main reason - health and enjoyment. If I may say something - also give consideration to hitting the trails...
  15. +another 1. As a buddy said, it was his best inVESTment (is it Friday yet?!) in trail running...
  16. Otter another case of "It's impossible until it's done"... A couple of years ago a sub-4 Otter was deemed impossible. Then one guy scraped it. Now top 5 all doing sub-4! Amazing...
  17. Born to run...(?) Only thing I can think of!
  18. Agreed! But I tend to run on the same (physical) side of the road - just to avoid running with the same camber for every bit of the way. So one half with and one against traffic, so that same hip does not constantly remain below the other. At the times I run, there are so few of us on the road that we're friends by now!
  19. Surely you don't need to have run the qualifier before you enter...? (Not that I have entered or plan to do so.)
  20. Firstly, no formula will be spot-on. HR is very individual. Secondly, it sounds as if you already know the answer. Go for a test or test yourself. And if you're looking for a "good enough" answer, check max HR on a race with a lekker hill in you that you know you've nailed. That won't be max, because deep-down you know you still have some way to go in your race, but at least it'll be a good indication. Without having the necessity for a bucket. Edit: Why so worried about HR max? A lot of programs work off either LT or pace...(?)
  21. I run with a variety of drops in both environment, but most I go to is 8. And the 8 is the exception, I prefer 0 and 4(-6). I keep mixing it up, so that I don't run just in 4mm for 2 months, then 0 for 2 months. The fact that I don't heel-strike, does (in my mind) make a bit of a difference to the relevance of drop. I did run in a 10mm drop once - positively hated it. Felt like the heel was "wiggling" under me from the very first run. And it bothered me so much subconsciously that I ended up with a short of serious Achilles injury, fortunately diagnosed early enough, from not putting down my heel at all during my stride due to not wanting that feeling.
  22. Is there a link to this magical Asics program? Esp since I've been "tapering" for a couple of weeks and recovering an injury... may be good to start with a program
  23. Hi Andrew, my wife saw some friends riding 7WeeksPoort in some of your kit (they picked it up at Argus expo) with matching buffs. Black with bright flowers on it. Looking at the site above (weardirect), I could not find anything. Closest was arm warmers looking like that. She is specifically interested in the buff. Are you planning on having a rerun on those or has it gone the way of the dodo?
  24. It's a multi-directional palindrome - you can stand on your head and it'll still work! That MUST mean even more - go klap it!
